Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century, democracy spread around the world in turbulent bursts of change, sweeping across national borders in dramatic cascades of revolution and reform. Aftershocks offers a new global-oriented explanation for this wavelike spread and retreat—not only of democracy but also of its twentieth-century rivals, fascism and communism. Seva Gunitsky argues that waves of regime change are driven by the aftermath of cataclysmic disruptions to the international system. These hegemonic shocks, marked by the sudden rise and fall of great powers, have been essential and often-neglected drivers of domestic transformations. Though rare and fleeting, they not only repeatedly alter the global hierarchy of powerful states but also create unique and powerful opportunities for sweeping national reforms—by triggering military impositions, swiftly changing the incentives of domestic actors, or transforming the basis of political legitimacy itself. As a result, the evolution of modern regimes cannot be fully understood without examining the consequences of clashes between great powers, which repeatedly—and often unsuccessfully—sought to cajole, inspire, and intimidate other states into joining their camps.

Fassett and John T. Warren, along with two section editors and twenty-nine additional contributors, provide a balanced overview of various paradigms in the field—social scientific, interpretive, and critical. Key Features Three sections, addressing overlapping issues in communication and instruction, collectively represent multiple paradigms. This allows the reader to experience the depth and nuance available in communications studies. Each perspective is granted its own foundational chapter to provide an orientation to the discipline. Each contributor sets the agenda for their approach, helping the reader identify where the field is headed and where future research might be beneficial. Besides reviews of extant literature, demonstrating where the field has been, this Handbook also includes chapters that share topical new findings. SECTION I: Communication Education Ann Darling, Section Editor SECTION II: Instructional Communication Scott A. Myers, Section Editor SECTION III: Critical Communication Pedagogy John T. Warren and Deanna L. Fassett, Section Editors This Handbook will benefit scholars, graduate students, and general readers—irrespective of method or disciplinary background—who are interested in the connections between communication and instruction.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with socially engaged art projects in the Chinese countryside, with the artists and intellectuals who are involved, the villagers they meet and the local authorities with whom they negotiate. In recent years an increasing number of urban artists have turned towards the countryside in an attempt to revive rural areas perceived to be in a crisis. The vantage point of this book is the Bishan Commune. In 2010, Ou Ning drafted a notebook entitled Bishan Commune: How to Start Your Own Utopia. The notebook presents a utopian ideal of life based on anarchist Peter Kropotkin’s idea of mutual aid. In 2011 the Commune was established in Bishan Village in Anhui Province. The main questions of this book thus revolve around how an anarchist, utopian community unfolds to the backdrop of the political, social and historical landscape of rural China, or more directly: How do you start your own utopia in the Chinese countryside?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are events that attract considerable interest from academics and practitioners, and much research has been conducted into their impact on individuals, organizations and societies. Yet, despite all the existing research and the varied theoretical and methodological approaches employed, there remains more to learn about M&As. The Routledge Companion to Mergers and Acquisitions takes a detailed look at this multifacted subject using a novel framework of four domains – substantive issues, contextual issues, methodological issues and conceptual issues. Drawing on the expertise of its international team of contributors, the volume surveys the state of the field, including emerging and cutting-edge areas such as social network analysis and corporate branding. This Companion will be a rich resource for students, researchers and practitioners involved in the study of M&As, and organizational and strategic studies more widely.

Book excerpt: Specifically written about the library work environment, this book offers strategies for creating and maintaining a positive and supportive LIS environment that will engage all types of staff, resulting in increased performance. Workplace engagement is a growing trend in management for good reason: the success of any organization depends as much on the mindsets and attitudes of the staff as any other factor or material component. This book shares research-derived strategies for creating and maintaining a positive LIS environment that will engage and empower all types of library employees—strategies that will boost worker engagement and improve performance. The information in Cultivating Engaged Staff: Better Management for Better Libraries is based on the author's doctoral research investigating the conditions that lead to higher levels of workplace engagement and how these elements interact to create an environment that supports engagement. Readers will come away with a clear understanding of how to apply these research findings in the LIS field, with particular reference to the changing technological environment, the nature of the work, and the legislative and political environment. The book also includes real-life stories that enable managers to view their own behavior through the eyes of other colleagues and workers.
