Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1782, Princess Ekaterina Dashkova was appointed dir. of Russia's Imperial Acad. of Arts & Sci. by Catherine the Great. It was just two years after she had met with another personality of the Enlightenment -- Benjamin Franklin, founding pres. of Amer. first scientific acad., the Amer. Philosophical Soc. (APS). The essays in this vol., pub. as a companion to an exhib. of the same title & on the occasion of the Franklin Tercentenary of 2006, highlight Dashkova as an accomplished Enlightenment woman. They explore how she, like Franklin, took up the challenge of living according to the newest ideals of her age. Nominated by Franklin in 1789 to become the first female member of the APS, she in turn made him the first Amer. member of the Russian Acad.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration has transformed the social, economic, political and cultural landscapes of global cities such as London, Melbourne, Milan and Amsterdam. The term ‘superdiversity’ captures a new era of migration-driven demographic diversifications and associated complexities. Superdiversity is the future or, in many cases, the current reality of neighbourhoods, cities, countries and regions, yet the implications of superdiversification for governance and policy have, until now, received very little attention. First published as a special issue of Policy & Politics, this insightful volume brings together contributions from experts across Europe to explore the ways in which superdiversity has shaped the development of policy and to consider challenges for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tradition recognises five social sciences: anthropology, economies, social psychology, sociology, and political science. But who knows what is going on in all five disciplines? Social scientists from one discipline often know little or nothing about the progress made by social scientists from another discipline working on essentially the same social problem. Sometimes, even of a neighbouring discipline is terra incognita. the methodology The problem becomes worse when we widen the remit to natural scientists and engineers. I have found little evidence myself that they see themselves as standing on the other side of an unbridgeable golf between two cultures. They observe the intellectual excesses of those few 'newage' social scientists who see themselves fighting a 'science war', but the ignorance of these innumerate critics is so apparent in their grossly naive attacks on natural science, that they are not taken seriously. However, although natural scientists appreciate that most social science is genuine science, they seldom know much about how and why it is done as it iso This can lead to serious inefficiencies in areas in which the traditional frontiers between social and natural science are melting away. An example is the frontier between the economies of imperfeet competition and evolutionary biology. Reversing the usual bias, the evolutionary biologists commonly know little mathematics, and hence find the game theory literature hard to read, with the result that they often spend their time re-inventing the wheel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "On the 23rd of December 1907, with all the pomp that the British Empire could muster, William Thomson, Baron Kelvin of Largs was buried in Westminster Abbey beside the nation's most venerated scientist, Sir Isaac Newton. In his lifetime Thomson was seen as the most important natural philosopher of the Victorian age, but the waxing and waning of the twentieth century and the supplanting of classical physics have eroded his reputation, so that for many scientists he is remembered as little more than a unit of temperature." "This collection of essays seeks to reevaluate and rehabilitate Lord Kelvin, setting both the man and his work in historical and scientific context. Distinctive in bringing the expertise of a range of authors, historians of science and of mathematics, physicists, mathematicians, and engineers to bear on Kelvin's life, labours, and legacy, this text is suitable for those with interests in any of these areas. The diversity of contributors in itself testifies to the extent of Kelvin's work, and will enable the reader to view the subject from a variety of perspectives, each of which complements and enriches the others, although each essay is self contained and can be read independently."--Résumé de l'éditeur.
