Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a longstanding scholarly debate on the nature of prophecy in ancient Israel. Until now, no study has based itself on the semantics of the Hebrew lexeme nābîʾ ("prophet"). This investigation by William L. Kelly discusses the nature and function of prophecy in the corpus of the Hebrew book of Jeremiah. It analyses all occurrences of nābîʾ in Jeremiah and performs a close reading of three primary texts, Jeremiah 1.4–19, 23.9–40 and 27.1–28.17. The result is a detailed explanation of how prophecy works, and what it meant to call someone a nābîʾ in ancient Israel. Combining the results of the semantic analysis and close readings, the study reaches conclusions for six main areas of study: (1) the function and nature of prophecy; (2) dreams and visions; (3) being sent; (4) prophets, priests and cult; (5) salvation and doom; and (6) legitimacy and authority. These conclusions explain the conceptual categories related to nābîʾ in the corpus. I then situate these findings in two current debates, one on the definition of nābîʾ and one on cultic prophecy. This study contributes to critical scholarship on prophecy in the ancient world, on the book of Jeremiah, and on prophets in ancient Israel. It is the first major study to analyse nābîʾ based on its semantic associations. It adds to a growing consensus which understands prophecy as a form of divination. Contrary to some trends in Jeremiah scholarship, this work demonstrates the importance of a close reading of the Masoretic (Hebrew) text. This study uses a method of a general nature which can be applied to other texts. Thus there are significant implications for further research on prophecy and prophetic literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This digital box set includes the first four books in the Eleanor Morgan series, more than 1,200 pages of contemporary fantasy, Fae, adventure, magic, and dragons! Eleanor Morgan is faced with an impossible choice: destroy the world of her birth or the world she calls home? THE WORLDBREAKER: Eleanor Morgan lived her first thirty-four years as a happily mundane human in the Pacific Northwest. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a story if it stayed that way. After she nearly ends up as a vampire’s appetizer, Eleanor finally learns the truth. She was sent from the Fae Plane as a child so she could one day trigger the fairy magic and open the eight gates between Earth and the Fae Plane. THE GUIDE: Finnegan Byrne, half-Fae and a servant of the Light Throne, met Eleanor in a bar six years ago and has been biding his time ever since. Although he longs for more, his true mission is to reveal the truth and be her guide when the magic breaks. THE WEREWOLF: Damaged, alone, and powerful, Isaac Walker has no place in the local pack, and his Alpha gives him a mission to get him out of town. He’s supposed to accompany Eleanor on her quest to open the gates between the Fae Realm and Earth—and take her out if she proves too big a threat. What wasn’t part of his brief was falling in love. THE WITCH: Every magic wielder needs a teacher, and Eleanor finds hers in Florence White Elk. Florence joins the team to train Eleanor and help protect humanity from the effects of the tech-destroying magic that comes with each gate opening, but her help comes with a price. Eleanor most help rescue Florence’s twin sister who was kidnapped by the Fae when she was a child. THE VAMPIRE: Deliciously sexy Raj Allred leads the PNW vampires, but what he wants almost more than anything is to take control of the world-breaker. Instead of taking her prisoner and stopping the gates from opening, Raj finds himself tied to her by friendship, respect, and desire. Everyone has secrets, and no one is what they seem… Will Eleanor’s trust in her companions be rewarded, or will it be what destroys it all? "This [The Cardinal Gate] is a whole story with a strong female protagonist and superior writing! Brilliant and entertaining." — Rabia Tanveer, Readers’ Favorites, 5-star review "The Waning Moon is a can't-miss fantasy adventure with humor, snark, and fun banter. A must-read!" — Liz Konkel, Readers’ Favorite, 5-star review “This [The Ruby Blade] is an epic fantasy and fans of magic and mayhem will lap it up, but the by-play and the strong, positive characters, especially the women, are so refreshing to read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many scholars recognize literary similarities between Hosea, Amos, Micah, and Zephaniah, defining the compositional relationship between these texts remains a matter of debate. Following the scholarly trajectory of exploring the compositional relationship between the Twelve prophets, several scholars argue that these four prophetic texts formed a precursory collection to the Book of the Twelve. Yet even among advocates for this ‘Book of the Four’ there remain differences in defining the form and function of the collection. By reexamining the literary parallels between these texts, Werse shows how different methodological convictions have led to the diverse composition models in the field today. Through careful consideration of emerging insights in the study of deuteronomism and scribalism, Werse provides an innovative composition model explaining how these four texts came to function as a collection in the wake of the traumatic destruction of Jerusalem. This volume explores a historic function of these prophetic voices by examining the editorial process that drew them together.

This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 918 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Isaiah has been regarded from the earliest Christian period as a key part of the Old Testament's witness to Jesus Christ. This commentary by highly regarded Old Testament scholar J. Gordon McConville draws on the best of biblical scholarship as well as the Christian tradition to offer a substantive and useful commentary on Isaiah. McConville treats Isaiah as an ancient Israelite document that speaks to twenty-first-century Christians. He examines the text section by section--offering a fresh translation, textual notes, paragraph-level commentary, and theological reflection--and shows how the prophetic words are framed to persuade audiences. Grounded in rigorous scholarship but useful for those who preach and teach, this volume is the second in a new series on the Prophets. Series volumes are both critically engaged and sensitive to the theological contributions of the text. Series editors are Mark J. Boda, McMaster Divinity College, and J. Gordon McConville, University of Gloucestershire.
