Book excerpt: Recently there has been an upsurge of interest in puns, which are now recognized as a motivating factor in the operation of literary discourse. In this comprehensive study, hundreds of puns upon names in the Hebrew Bible are examined. The biblical authors are shown to have made play with the names both of people and of places to an extraordinary degree, so working their puns into the literary texture of given passages and units that the technique must be recognized as a significant aspect of biblical poetics. The homiletic midrashic name derivations found in postbiblical literature are merely an extreme development of a feature present in the Bible. The author examines the mechanism of the device and defines various types and subtypes, some puns being fairly evident and others constructed as riddles that must be decoded by the reader. Instances are found of puns being carried over from one book to another, the later versions both retaining and revitalizing the older forms. New solutions are offered to many problems in connection with biblical names, and there are numerous specific discussions of the ways in which the implications and associations of given names are exploited to form part of the meaning of different literary units.
