Steven doesn't want to be the boss and is forced to defend people he loves and his gentle way of living. With help from the Russian Mafiya; U.S. Army and Navy Intelligence; high-ranking members from the triad itself; and a deep courage he has to reach for from within; he goes full force against the triad's "Red Pole" Enforcer: Tommy Teng! PREFACE This is a fact-based work of fiction. It is based on many actual facts and truths that exist in the multi-ethnic world of organized crime both now as well as hundreds of years ago. It specifically addresses the Chinese part of that world: the Triads. It covers not only 20th and 21st century triad activities but, also covers their crimes during the 18th and 19th centuries; when triads were pirates. And it is the first book ever written about the Chinese Junk pirate ship: Ning Po. The story also touches upon another criminal group based near mainland China but, whose roots are now entrenched in almost every country: The Russian Mafiya. Facts in this story are taken from personal firsthand knowledge that I've acquired over a thirty year span. What they relate to and what methods were used for my research are gone into in my "Author's Note" herein. During my law enforcement days as a Chicago Police Officer in the 1970s, I frequented Chicago's Chinatown: the mysterious shops, sinister nightclubs and illegal gambling dens run by the triad gangs there. Even though I was an "outsider"; people there could sense that I was a "real player." And those who knew or could sense that I was a cop; weren't bothered by it. They sensed that I was a wild cop that liked the "hard, sharp edge": different from all of the others they had encountered. And because of that, I, an outsider, was welcomed and made privy to facts by insiders in the Chinese underworld that nobody else but the insiders knew; "the real ways." The Chinese Junk Ning Po referred to in the story was a real ship a real Pirate Ship. The island of Cheung Chau, the location of the headquarters of the fictional Yellow Dragon Ning Po Triad in this story, is, in reality; an island with a pirate and smuggling history dating back 2500 years. And that "industry" became very active in the 16th century. Some details in this story regarding the Nin

Book excerpt: A detailed historical look at how copyright was negotiated and protected by authors, publishers, and the state in late imperial and modern China In Pirates and Publishers, Fei-Hsien Wang reveals the unknown social and cultural history of copyright in China from the 1890s through the 1950s, a time of profound sociopolitical changes. Wang draws on a vast range of previously underutilized archival sources to show how copyright was received, appropriated, and practiced in China, within and beyond the legal institutions of the state. Contrary to common belief, copyright was not a problematic doctrine simply imposed on China by foreign powers with little regard for Chinese cultural and social traditions. Shifting the focus from the state legislation of copyright to the daily, on-the-ground negotiations among Chinese authors, publishers, and state agents, Wang presents a more dynamic, nuanced picture of the encounter between Chinese and foreign ideas and customs. Developing multiple ways for articulating their understanding of copyright, Chinese authors, booksellers, and publishers played a crucial role in its growth and eventual institutionalization in China. These individuals enforced what they viewed as copyright to justify their profit, protect their books, and crack down on piracy in a changing knowledge economy. As China transitioned from a late imperial system to a modern state, booksellers and publishers created and maintained their own economic rules and regulations when faced with the absence of an effective legal framework. Exploring how copyright was transplanted, adopted, and practiced, Pirates and Publishers demonstrates the pivotal roles of those who produce and circulate knowledge.

Book excerpt: EXTREME COP CHICAGO:PD has been QUOTED and SHOWN in the May 2007 PLAYBOY!! This is a RARE event for an Author´s First Book!! From The Critics: "There have been many Chicago cops who have committed violent acts. Some have wounded or killed criminals in questionable shootings. Some have been drug dealers and pimps and many were burglars. But, none of them ran even close to me in all-around violent acts, dangerous car chases on a regular basis (some at 130 in heavy traffic), maniacal behavior during arrests, the torturing of criminals, the rule violations--which nobody had the balls to commit--and unprecedented civil rights violations all on an almost daily basis."---Editorial Section, May 2007 PLAYBOY "shamelessly literate book section"--- Cover and Quote Quiz for readers --LAS VEGAS WEEKLY "Not long ago, Chicago Mobsters made Vegas their home. Nowadays, that´s pretty much over. There´s a `new gun´ in town, livin´ in Las Vegas though; he´s known as the Extreme Cop and he´s sharing his story in this book and it is a pretty wild one."--DAVE HALL, News Anchor, FOX 5 T.V. NEWS LIVE IN LAS VEGAS ..."it is a lively, swashbuckling read...some shrewd observations about police policies and tactics. I found it a hard book to put down."---Jan Libourel, Editor, GUN WORLD MAGAZINE "It´s an amazing story...it is a tough book...some very interesting observations...an interesting kind of take on the mob and the police department. You really capture that era of your years as a policeman effectively and chillingly...there are some tough scenes...this book has generated a lot of interest from magazines...it would make some movie...EXTREME COP: CHICAGO PD, The True Story of the Wildest, Most Violent Cop in the History of the Chicago Police. Jerry, it´s a remarkable job! You´re a good writer among other things..."---RICK KOGAN, CHICAGO TRIBUNE Book Critic and Host of CHICAGO TRIBUNE SUNDAY PAPERS Show, WGN RADIO "Mr. Extreme...Jerry Ardolino is one wild dude...articulate...intense. Extreme Cop blows The Shield [T. V. Series] apart."----LAS VEGAS WEEKLY, November 8, 2007 issue "I enjoyed the writing style. [EXTREME COP: CHICAGO PD] It really spoke to me. As editor of Police-Writers.com, I see all kinds of cop books. Guys write their memoirs; they read like police reports. Few of them get to a literary area where I think you´ve gone with this. A lot of cop books--I can read the scenerios and I can see it happening, but with yours the imagination is very peaked...some pretty erotic passages."---Lt. Raymond Foster, LAPD Ret.--Editor, Police Writers; Host: THE WATERING HOLE INTERNET RADIO SHOW EXTREME COP:CHICAGO PD is the true story of JERRY ARDOLINO, the wildest, most violent cop in the history of the Chicago Police Department and that would mean: in the history of the world. Jerry Ardolino is the book's author and it is the first true, full-length on-going story about the Chicago Police written by an insider. It has never been done before. Jerry Ardolino was a star-carrying member of that horde of hard-edged cops; the largest and deadliest "gang" in Chicago or anyplace else. The gang in midnight-blue leather police jackets who had the tools and the talent that enabled them to become known throughout the world, as the most violent, corrupt, out-of-control and; toughest police force ever to stalk the streets. And Jerry was to become known in that department from patrol levels, all the way to the High Command as being:"Extreme." There have been many Chicago cops who have committed violent acts. Some have wounded or killed criminals in questionable shootings. Some have been drug dealers and pimps and ma

Book excerpt: George Leslie Mackay (1844–1901), the famous Canadian Presbyterian missionary who came to northern Formosa (Taiwan) in 1872 and preached specifically with aborigines in mind, is the subject of an interdisciplinary study by seven independent scholars interested in the nineteenth-century imperial project and Christian mission to China. Importantly, Mackay’s mission defies such binary opposites as East and West: the missionary a conduit of an earlier Scottish-Canadian spirituality adapted to Taiwan that allowed converts to appropriate the Presbyterian faith on their own terms; the mission field in which he operated a “biculture” of foreign initiative and aboriginal agency working hand in hand. Mackay’s ordination of aboriginal ministers, giving us the Northern Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Taiwan (PCT), was a bold departure from the imperial, Anglo-Canadian, Presbyterian norm. So, too, his marriage to a Taiwanese slave-girl, Chhang-mia, and the arranged interracial marriages that he performed between select Chinese ministers and female Taiwanese graduates (which included his two daughters). Mackay’s missionary writing and famous autobiography From Far Formosa—a fine specimen of the nineteenth-century heroic memoir genre—is notable for its defense of both gender and racial equality, and despite its unmistakable patriarchal leanings. Mackay’s repudiation of Darwinism and belief in an early type of creation science therein also locates the so-called “Barbarian Bible Man” opposite such virulent, racist theorizing as Social Darwinism and Eugenics. He was a dentist not an abortionist. A relative unknown to most Western scholars of religion, Mackay is Taiwan’s most famous native son, represented on the national stage in 2008 as a sky god and Taiwanese animistic deity of supernatural power and political influence par excellent. Although a product of the colonial times in which he lived, post-colonial scholars who ignore Mackay, his life and legacy, clearly do so at some peril.
