Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, the author of the classic Family and Marriage in Britain (1962), Professor Ronald Fletcher here makes a new appraisal of the family in society today. Comprehensive in its range of material and straightforward in style, the book represents his thoughts on the family and marriage in Britain in the 1980s. Since the 1969 Divorce Reform Act, many anxieties had been felt and voiced about the trends of divorce, marital breakdown, the growing instability of the family and so on. The changes, however, were hard to discern and assess, statistical records difficult to interpret reliably. Ronald Fletcher discusses these continuing anxieties and presents a thorough-going critical review of these changes and statistics. In his conclusions he emphasises the continuing importance in modern society of the family and marriage. Professor Fletcher examines the family as both an agent and symptom of change. He explores in detail the relation between family life and the deeper long-term changes which had been at work throughout the twentieth century – the disrupting experience of world wars; the rapidity of technological and social change; the many-sided changes in communications; the spread of secularisation; and changes in education – seeking a profound and satisfactory causal explanation. He ends with a consideration of the future of the family and society alike, and what our social and educational policies ought to be if certain values and qualities of life are to be sustained. The Shaking of the Foundations is the companion volume to The Abolitionists (1989), in which Ronald Fletcher critically examines the anti-family arguments of the previous thirty years.

Through a series of in-depth interviews renowned architects such as Tadao Ando, Arata Isozaki, and Kazuo Shinohara speak out on issues ranging from the philosophies of Japanese Modernism to the politics of urban planning in Japanese cities. Often contradictory, but never dull, these interviews offer compelling insights into contemporary Japanese culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a moving tribute to one of the twentieth century's most seminal philosophers and theologians, Paul Tillich. In fact, it is widely accepted as the standard biography for Tillich. A soberly objective portrait, it was supported by Tillich himself, who hoped that the full telling of his story would set in context its unconventional aspects (as told in books by Hannah Tillich and Rollo May). Wilhelm and Marion Pauck have recreated the many-sided "Paulus" in all his greatness and humanness. Tracing the development of Tillich's thought alongside the unfolding of his life in Germany and the United States, the authors have provided an excellent model of biographical research.

Book excerpt: Dr. Tillich shows here that in spite of the contrast between philosophical and biblical language, it is neither necessary nor possible to separate them from each other. On the contrary, all the symbols used in biblical religion drive inescapably toward the philosophical quest for being. An important statement of a great theologian's position, this book presents an eloquent plea for the essential function of philosophy in religious thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaking…Then Revival…Then Harvest! The end times are unfolding before our eyes. First, there will be unprecedented shakings. Today, the world is shaking in alarming ways. And this is just the beginning. Nations, institutions, economies, families, individuals, the earth’s environment, the cosmos, the spiritual realm—in every dimension and sphere of life, we will see powerful waves of shaking that disrupt the course of our lives and take away our false sense of security in earthly resources, compelling us to return to our Creator. The main purpose of these shakings is to judge the people of the world for their sin and rebellion against God. Yet God is using the shaking we are now experiencing to refine believers so we will be purified to become the remnant that is ready for Jesus’s imminent appearing. Second, there will be unprecedented revival. As we respond to the shaking with repentance and wholehearted devotion to God, we will be prepared to take an active role in the coming last-days revival in which God’s sovereign glory will be revealed! There will be an all-inclusive supernatural movement characterized by miracles, healings, salvations, financial provision, prophetic visions, renewed holiness, powerful worship, strong discipleship, and profound love. Finally, there will be an unprecedented harvest of souls with global impact! The Holy Spirit will empower the church to reach the lost with the demonstration of miracles, signs, and wonders. Millions of people worldwide will come to genuine repentance, surrendering their hearts to the Lord Jesus. In End-Time Shaking and Revival, best-selling author Guillermo Maldonado expands on last-days themes introduced in his previous books, revealing how to… Avoid God’s judgment Respond correctly to the divine shakings in your life and in the world Be revived and continuously filled with the Spirit Participate in the worldwide harvest Move in supernatural power We must understand God’s cycle of end-time events so we can align our lives with His momentous purposes in these last days!

Book excerpt: Pomeroy gives the reader a clear view of the Systematic Theology of Paul Tillich, perhaps the greatest theologian of the 20th century. Tillich's theology addresses a wide range of theological issues beginning with the nature of God and ending with the nature of Eternal Life. Using the latest in social science analysis, Tillich identifies specific conditions confronted by individuals and nations, addressing each from a Bible-based theological standpoint. At the end of each chapter Pomeroy illustrates the issues at hand with real life stories or reflections from leading scientists, theologians and social scientists. This is then followed by discussion questions. The book is a welcome relief for theologians and lay people alike as it has depth without all those written words. For a mainline church study group it is a primer.

Book excerpt: Marriage and the Family presents an account of attitudes to marriage and the family in each of the major religious faiths - the Christian, Jewish, Moslem, Baha'i, Hindu, Sikh and Buddhist faiths - and includes the Humanist views of marriage and the family. Each article is written by a member of the respective faith and includes an account of the particular faith portrayed. The material available in English for such ceremonies varies greatly in different faiths. For example, Buddhist marriage ceremonies are mainly of recent date and have emerged in the West where such ceremonies are presented here in en English translation probably for the first time. The book is introduced with an essay by Professor Ronald Fletcher on the rapidly changing attitudes to marriage and an assessment of their significance. Janet Trotter follows his essay with a description of the legal problems by ethnic minorities in Britain.
