Book Synopsis The The Collected Works of W.B. Yeats Vol. III: Autobiographies by : William Butler Yeats
Download or read book The The Collected Works of W.B. Yeats Vol. III: Autobiographies written by William Butler Yeats and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-07-06 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiographies consists of six autobiographical works that William Butler Yeats published together in the mid-1930s to form a single, extraordinary memoir of the first fifty-eight years of his life, from his earliest memories of childhood to winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. This volume provides a vivid series of personal accounts of a wide range of figures, and it describes Yeats's work as poet and playwright, as a founder of Dublin's famed Abbey Theatre, his involvement with Irish nationalism, and his fascination with occultism and visions. This book is most compelling as Yeats's own account of the growth of his poetic imagination. Yeats thought that a poet leads a life of allegory, and that his works are comments upon it. Autobiographies enacts his ruling belief in the connections and coherence between the life that he led and the works that he wrote. It is a vision of personal history as art, and so it is the one truly essential companion to his poems and plays. Edited by William H. O'Donnell and Douglas N. Archibald, this volume is available for the first time with invaluable explanatory notes and includes previously unpublished passages from candidly explicit first drafts.

Book excerpt: The Collected Works in Verse and Prose of William Butler Yeats, Vol. 8 (of 8) / Discoveries. Edmund Spenser. Poetry and Tradition; and / Other Essays. Bibliography William Butler Yeats was an Irish poet and dramatist, and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years Yeats served as an Irish Senator for two terms. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and along with Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn founded the Abbey Theatre, serving as its chief during its early years. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." He was the first Irishman so honored. Yeats is generally considered one of the few writers who completed their greatest works after being awarded the Nobel Prize; such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1929).

This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of W. B. Yeats, Volume VIII: The Irish Dramatic Movement is part of a fourteen-volume series under the general editorship of eminent Yeats scholars Richard J. Finneran and George Mills Harper. This complete edition includes virtually all of the Nobel laureate's published work, in authoritative texts and with extensive explanatory notes. Edited by the distinguished Yeats scholars Mary FitzGerald and Richard J. Finneran, The Irish Dramatic Movement gathers together -- for the first time -- all of the poet's time-honored essays on drama and the groundbreaking movement that led to the enduring Irish theater of today. Although the reputation of W. B. Yeats as one of the preeminent writers of the twentieth century rests primarily on his poetry, drama and the theatre were among his abiding concerns. Indeed, in 1917 he wrote, "I need a theatre; I believe myself to be a dramatist." Here in this volume is the collection of all his major dramatic criticism for the years 1899-1919, including previously uncollected material. A practicing dramatist himself, Yeats had strong convictions about the goals of the Irish theater and the appropriate plays to be produced. The essays in this collection address many topics, from the turbulent early years of what became the Abbey Theatre to the controversies over the plays of John Millington Synge and the relationship between drama and nationalism. Also evident are Yeats's judgments on numerous plays, playwrights, and productions, both in Irish and in English. FitzGerald and Finneran's volume includes an Introduction and a History of the Text, as well as copious but unobtrusive annotation. The Irish Dramatic Movement is an essential volume for both readers of Yeats and students of the early years of twentieth-century theater.

Download or read book The Shadowy Waters written by W. B. Yeats and published by Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1900, "The Shadowy Waters" is a poetic drama by the celebrated Irish poet W. B. Yeats. This mystical and symbolic play explores themes of love, destiny, and the supernatural, drawing inspiration from Irish mythology and folklore. Set in a mythical past, the narrative follows the journey of a mortal prince who falls in love with a supernatural woman, the Queen of the Faeries. As their love faces trials and tribulations, the play delves into profound questions about the nature of human desires, the conflict between the mortal and immortal worlds, and the pursuit of higher truths. Yeats weaves his distinctive poetic language into a dramatic form, infusing the play with rich imagery and spiritual themes that reflect his ongoing fascination with the esoteric and the transcendent. "The Shadowy Waters" stands as a captivating example of Yeats' ability to merge poetic expression with theatrical storytelling, offering readers and audiences an entrancing exploration of the liminal spaces between reality and the magical.
