Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Big Bang Theory’s mix of humor, nerdy protagonists, sexy female leads and quirky characters have made the series one of CBS’s most successful shows and have brought it international acclaim. Like Friends before it, The Big Bang Theory is touted as the show for the new millennium, bringing together aspects of classic humor applied to modern predicaments, usually sexual in nature. This collection of new essays explores sexual themes in The Big Bang Theory, interpreted through various critical lenses. Focusing on gender issues, the contributors explore how the series deals with sexuality and the ideals of masculinity, femininity and heterosexuality.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Theory of the Early Universe by : Dmitry S. Gorbunov
Download or read book Introduction to the Theory of the Early Universe written by Dmitry S. Gorbunov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written from the viewpoint of a deep connection between cosmology and particle physics. It presents the results and ideas on both the homogeneous and isotropic Universe at the hot stage of its evolution and in later stages. The main chapters describe in a systematic and pedagogical way established facts and concepts on the early and the present Universe. The comprehensive treatment, hence, serves as a modern introduction to this rapidly developing field of science. To help in reading the chapters without having to constantly consult other texts, essential materials from General Relativity and the theory of elementary particles are collected in the appendices. Various hypotheses dealing with unsolved problems of cosmology, and often alternative to each other, are discussed at a more advanced level. These concern dark matter, dark energy, matter-antimatter asymmetry, etc.

Download or read book Age of the Geek written by Kathryn E. Lane and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection examines the nerd and/or geek stereotype in popular culture today. Utilizing the media—film, TV, YouTube, Twitter, fiction—that often defines daily lives, the contributors interrogate what it means to be labeled a “nerd” or “geek.” While the nerd/geek that is so easily recognized now is assuredly a twenty-first century construct, an examination of the terms’ history brings a greater understanding of their evolution. From sports to slasher films, Age of the Geek establishes a dialogue with texts as varied as the depictions of “nerd” or “geek” stereotypes.
Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Masculinity in American Literature and Culture by : Lydia R. Cooper
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Masculinity in American Literature and Culture written by Lydia R. Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-26 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, the U.S. has seen a rise in misogynistic and race-based violence perpetrated by men expressing a sense of grievance, from "incels" to alt-right activists. Grounding sociological, historical, political, and economic analyses of masculinity through the lens of cultural narratives in many forms and expressions, The Routledge Companion to Masculinity in American Literature and Culture suggests that how we examine the stories that shape us in turn shapes our understanding of our current reality and gives us language for imagining better futures. Masculinity is more than a description of traits associated with particular performances of gender. It is more than a study of gender and social power. It is an examination of the ways in which gender affects our capacity to engage ethically with each other in complex human societies. This volume offers essays from a range of established, global experts in American masculinity as well as new and upcoming scholars in order to explore not just what masculinity once meant, has come to mean, and may mean in the future in the U.S.; it also articulates what is at stake with our conceptions of masculinity.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of Women and Science since 1660 by : Claire G. Jones
Download or read book The Palgrave Handbook of Women and Science since 1660 written by Claire G. Jones and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-02 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a comprehensive overview of core areas of investigation and theory relating to the history of women and science. Bringing together new research with syntheses of pivotal scholarship, the volume acknowledges and integrates history, theory and practice across a range of disciplines and periods. While the handbook’s primary focus is on women's experiences, chapters also reflect more broadly on gender, including issues of femininity and masculinity as related to scientific practice and representation. Spanning the period from the birth of modern science in the late seventeenth century to current challenges facing women in STEM, it takes a thematic and comparative approach to unpack the central issues relating to women in science across different regions and cultures. Topics covered include scientific networks; institutions and archives; cultures of science; science communication; and access and diversity. With its breadth of coverage, this handbook will be the go-to resource for undergraduates taking courses on the history and philosophy of science and gender history, while at the same time providing the foundation for more advanced scholars to undertake further historical and theoretical investigation.

Book excerpt: Cosmology: Scientific Study of the Universe For thousands of years, humankind has gazed up into the heavens at the beautiful Milky Way galaxy and pondered “From where did it come?” Over the years, as more knowledge was acquired, our views of the universe have changed. Our thinking has evolved from a belief that the Earth was flat, and then it was thought the Earth was the center of the universe. Then the misinterpretation of redshift gave the appearance that everything erupted from a single point. Thinking evolved to the idea of a big bang belief that everywhere is the center of the universe and it is expanding without limit. Now again, we have reached dogma. Scientific thinkers recognize the big bang theory has serious credibility problems. It is now proved and recognized that the big bang concept was inferred from misinterpretation of redshift observations first acquired in the early 1910s at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. The big bang theory was concocted before positron/electron combination ‘positroniums’ were known. These smallest of atoms were discovered in the 1930s and not understood until the 1950s. Positroniums have a tremendous amount of energy, and when their positrons and electrons come into contact, they annihilate, the conversion of all their mass into energy that is evolving into all the mass and energy in the universe. The initial annihilation started the cascading at what is now the center of the universe. It is a huge void in the Eridanus constellation, about 10 billion light-years from Earth. Now, we have a provable scientific explanation. Finally, it all makes sense without myth.

Book excerpt: This book is written from the viewpoint that a deep connection exists between cosmology and particle physics. It presents the results and ideas on both the homogeneous and isotropic Universe at the hot stage of its evolution and in later stages. The main chapters describe in a systematic and pedagogical way established facts and concepts on the early and the present Universe. In the second edition, many chapters and sections have been revised, and numerical values of particle physics and cosmological parameters have been updated.
Book Synopsis The Science of the Big Bang Theory by : Edited by Paul F. Kisak
Download or read book The Science of the Big Bang Theory written by Edited by Paul F. Kisak and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Big Bang theory is the prevailing cosmological model for the universe from the earliest known periods through its subsequent large-scale evolution. It states that the universe expanded from a very high density state, and offers a comprehensive explanation for a broad range of observed phenomena, including the abundance of light elements, the cosmic microwave background, large scale structure, and Hubble's Law. If the known laws of physics are extrapolated beyond where they are valid, there is a singularity. Modern measurements place this moment at approximately 13.8 billion years ago, which is thus considered the age of the universe. After the initial expansion, the universe cooled sufficiently to allow the formation of subatomic particles, and later simple atoms. Giant clouds of these primordial elements later coalesced through gravity to form stars and galaxies. It is the Big Bang Model that gives the best description of our known universe.
