Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hair, or lack of it, is one the most significant identifiers of individuals in any society. In Antiquity, the power of hair to send a series of social messages was no different. This volume covers nearly a thousand years of history, from Archaic Greece to the end of the Roman Empire, concentrating on what is now Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. Among the key issues identified by its authors is the recognition that in any given society male and female hair tend to be opposites (when male hair is generally short, women's is long); that hair is a marker of age and stage of life (children and young people have longer, less confined hairstyles; adult hair is far more controlled); hair can be used to identify the 'other' in terms of race and ethnicity but also those who stand outside social norms such as witches and mad women. The chapters in A Cultural History of Hair in Antiquity cover the following topics: religion and ritualized belief, self and society, fashion and adornment, production and practice, health and hygiene, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, class and social status, and cultural representations.

Book excerpt: 'This book should be regarded as rescue work. It salvages from pre-Victorian periodicals from the limbo of forgotten publications, and exhumes from long undisturbed sources a curious collection of women who, at a time when it was considered humiliating for a gentlewoman to earn money, contrived to support themselves by writing, editing, or publishing... sometimes even supporting husbands and children as well... The women who emerge make a motley gallery; but over the years that I have been getting to know them, they have won my respectful affection. More, indeed. To me they are all heroines...' Alison Adburgham, from her Foreword Magazines addressed to women have a long history in English, and have been subject to condescension for just as long. Alison Adburgham's groundbreaking volume, first published in 1972, rescues the so-called 'scribbling female' from such scorn, not least by documenting just how hard was the struggle for women writers to live by the pen.

Book excerpt: "Worlds Between" presents a series of pioneering essays by Leonore Davidoff which together constitute nothing less than an urgent reappraisal of our understanding of the relationship between gender and history. Among the topics discusses are the positions of servants and wives in Victorian and Edwardian England; the relationship between home and community in English society; the changing structure of housework; the role of family relationships; and the reflections on the role of the concepts of the "public" and the "private" developed through the work of feminist historians. For over two decades, Davidoff has been at the forefront of the reexamination of femininity and masculinity in history. This volume, which brings together her most important writings over this period, as well as several unpublished essays, will provide a necessary and important addition to the existing literature.

Book excerpt: From Daniel Defoe’s Family Instructor to William Godwin’s political novel Caleb Williams, literature written for and about servants tells a hitherto untold story about the development of sexual and gender ideologies in the early modern period. This original study explores the complicated relationships between domestic servants and their masters through close readings of such literary and nonliterary eighteenth-century texts. The early modern family was not biologically defined. It included domestic servants who often had strong emotional and intimate ties to their masters and mistresses. Kristina Straub argues that many modern assumptions about sexuality and gender identity have their roots in these affective relationships of the eighteenth-century family. By analyzing a range of popular and literary works—from plays and novels to newspapers and conduct manuals—Straub uncovers the economic, social, and erotic dynamics that influenced the development of these modern identities and ideologies. Highlighting themes important in eighteenth-century studies—gender and sexuality; class, labor, and markets; family relationships; and violence—Straub explores how the common aspects of human experience often intersected within the domestic sphere of master and servant. In examining the interpersonal relationships between the different classes, she offers new ways in which to understand sexuality and gender in the eighteenth century.

Book excerpt: Discusses the figure of the unchaste woman in a wide range of fiction written between 1835 and 1880, including serious novels by Dickens, Mrs. Gaskell, and George Eliot; popular novels that provided light reading for middle-class women; sensational fiction; propaganda for social reform; and stories in cheap periodicals which reached a different and far wider audience than either serious or popular novels. During these years, some women were struggling to become women, instead of the angels of purity that sentimental morality had made of them. The sexual woman, the whore, the mistress, the runaway wife, the seduced or fallen innocent, all attracted a cluster of ideas about the differences between women and men, about the power structure in sexual relationships, and about women's place in the social and moral world. In considering these topics, this book traces women and illuminates differences in the fiction writer for different social classes. -- Publisher description
