This book was released on 1996-04-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: State hospitals still account for the majority of the state dollars spent on mental health care across the nation. Why do state hospitals persist and expand despite public scandal and professional disapproval? What role does the state mental hospital play in the current system of care for the seriously mentally ill? What role should it play, and at what cost? Dowdall explores recent efforts, successful and unsuccessful, to meet the increasingly elaborate standards imposed from without on the contemporary state mental hospital, and the impact of these efforts on the quality of care provided to its patients.

Book Synopsis Caring for the Chronically Ill by : Janna L. Dieckmann
Download or read book Caring for the Chronically Ill written by Janna L. Dieckmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. When human populations and their needs change, organizations responsible for their care inevitably react. With the rapidly and significantly increased demand for chronic care at mid-twentieth century, solutions deemed satisfactory in the past were entirely inadequate. Thus, community leaders and politicians began promoting several approaches to long-term care services in the two decades between 1945 and 1965, but without an adequate source of financing to establish an effective system. In contrast to acute care services and despite the need, chronic care remained unavailable and of poor quality. This study consists of six chapters: an introduction and conclusion, along with four case studies that examine in detail the development of a long-term care system in Philadelphia between 1945 and 1965.

Book Synopsis The Eclipse of Community Mental Health and Erich Lindemann by : David G. Satin
Download or read book The Eclipse of Community Mental Health and Erich Lindemann written by David G. Satin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes make new contributions to the history of psychiatry and society in three ways: First, they propose a theory of values and ideology influencing the evolution of psychiatry and society in recurring cycles, and survey the history of psychiatry in recent centuries in light of this theory. Second, they review the waxing, prominence, and waning of Community Mental Health as an example of a segment of this cyclical history of psychiatry. Third, they provide the first biography of Erich Lindemann, one of the founders of social and community psychiatry, and explore the interaction of the prominent contributor with the historical environment and the influence this has on both. We return to the issue of values and ideologies as influences on psychiatry, whether or not it is accepted as professionally proper. This is intended to stimulate self-reflection and the acceptance of the values sources of ideology, their effect on professional practice, and the effect of values-based ideology on the community in which psychiatry practices. The books will be of interest to psychiatric teachers and practitioners, health planners, and socially responsible citizens.

Book Synopsis The Least Dangerous Branch? by : Stephen P. Powers
Download or read book The Least Dangerous Branch? written by Stephen P. Powers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2002-11-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the American judiciary still the least dangerous branch, as Alexander Hamilton and legal scholar Alexander Bickel characterized it? Unlike legislatures or administrative agencies, courts do not make policy so much as direct and redirect policy as it is implemented. The judicial contribution to policymaking involves the infusion of constitutional rights into the realm of public policy, and as the government has grown, the courts have become more powerful from doing more and more of this. Powers and Rothman explore the impact of the federal courts, providing a brief account of the development of constitutional law and an overview of the judiciary's impact in six controversial areas of public policy. •Busing •Affirmative action •Prison reform •Mental health reform •Procedural reforms in law enforcement •Electoral redistricting In each of these areas, the authors review significant cases that bear on the particular policy, exploring the social science evidence to assess the impact of the courts on policies—and the consequences of that intervention. Powers and Rothman conclude that judicial intervention in public policy has often brought about undesirable consequences, sometimes even for the intended beneficiaries of government intervention.

Book Synopsis Homelessness, Health, and Human Needs by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Homelessness, Health, and Human Needs written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have always been homeless people in the United States, but their plight has only recently stirred widespread public reaction and concern. Part of this new recognition stems from the problem's prevalence: the number of homeless individuals, while hard to pin down exactly, is rising. In light of this, Congress asked the Institute of Medicine to find out whether existing health care programs were ignoring the homeless or delivering care to them inefficiently. This book is the report prepared by a committee of experts who examined these problems through visits to city slums and impoverished rural areas, and through an analysis of papers written by leading scholars in the field.
