Book excerpt: "Vive la Revolution!" was the theme of the Twenty-Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics held in Val de Reuil, France, from September 17-22, 2000 as more than 140 experts in ship design, construction, and operation came together to exchange naval research developments. The forum encouraged both formal and informal discussion of presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers. This book includes sixty-three papers presented at the symposium which was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research, the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Bassin d'Essais des Carènes. This book includes the ten topical areas discussed at the symposium: wave-induced motions and loads, hydrodynamics in ship design, propulsor hydrodynamics and hydroacoustics, CFD validation, viscous ship hydrodynamics, cavitation and bubbly flow, wave hydrodynamics, wake dynamics, shallow water hydrodynamics, and fluid dynamics in the naval context.

Book excerpt: Some data and theories of two dimensional turbulent boundary layer separation are considered. A description of separating layers based on the Schofield and Perry similarity is proposed. It is shown that the Schofield and Perry defect law can describe detached profiles as accurately as it can describe attached profiles if the origin is shifted, from the wall, out to the zero velocity position in the detached flow. For an attached flow the inner wall matching condition is the usual law of the wall. For detached flow the wall matching condition is provided by the reversed flow for which a modified similarity scale is proposed. This extended validity of the Schofield and Perry defect law implies a unique progression of mean velocity profile shapes up to and through separation. Good experimental support for this theoretical result is presented. Experimental evidence also supports the proposition that detachment (and perhaps reattachment) always occurs at the same position on the locus of profile shapes, that is, boundary layers detach with a universal mean profile shape. A comparison of this result with other separation theories leads to another conclusion: that layers which separate in moving equilibrium not only detach with the same mean profile shape, but detach at the same local pressure gradient.

Book excerpt: The report presents an analysis predicting separation of a turbulent boundary layer over a cone-flare configuration with gas injected into the boundary layer ahead of separation point. Separation location and separation lengths are compared with experimental data obtained at Mach number of 6 and a range of Reynolds numbers. At the highest Reynolds numbers the extent of separation decreases with increasing Reynolds number. When compared to separation over cylinder-flare body it is found that the extent of separation is lower for the cone-flare configuration. (Author).

Book excerpt: Interdisciplinary and Advanced Topics in Science and Engineering, Volume 3: Separation of Flow presents the problem of the separation of fluid flow. This book provides information covering the fields of basic physical processes, analyses, and experiments concerning flow separation. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the flow separation on the body surface as discusses in various classical examples. This text then examines the analytical and experimental results of the laminar boundary layer of steady, two-dimensional flows in the subsonic speed range. Other chapters consider the study of flow separation on the two-dimensional body, flow separation on three-dimensional body shape and particularly on bodies of revolution. This book discusses as well the analytical solutions of the unsteady flow separation. The final chapter deals with the purpose of separation flow control to raise efficiency or to enhance the performance of vehicles and fluid machineries involving various engineering applications. This book is a valuable resource for engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The method of integral relations was successfully applied to compressible nonadiabatic turbulent boundary layers on a flat plate. The theory is designed to accept any desired eddy-viscosity model. A particular eddy-viscosity model was incorporated into the method, and the equations were programmed for application to a flat plate with no pressure gradient. The variations of the skin-friction coefficient with Reynolds number, Mach number, and temperature ratio were calculated using this program, and the results are in good accord with similar results calculated by the Spalding-Chi method and the Rubesin T' method. An analysis was made to predict to what extent turbulent separation of the free-interaction type can be inhibited by means of surface cooling. It was observed experimentally that free-interaction is applicable to separated turbulent boundary layers up to the separation point or beyond. The free-interaction model used in the analysis is based on adding the boundary-layer displacement thickness to the actual body dimensions in calculating the induced pressures. The critical temperature ratios calculated on this basis are generally greater than adiabatic wall temperature except in the supersonic range up to a Mach number approaching 3, where moderate cooling is required to inhibit separation.

Book excerpt: A computer code for a turbulent, compressible boundary-layer method, capable of carrying out computations in a region of separated flow, is developed and tested. The procedure after separation is to specify either friction velocity or boundary-layer thickness as an independent variable and obtain external velocity as a dependent variable. This requires a trial and error alternation of the specified variable in order to match the desired experimental or computed external velocity. Satisfactorily results were obtained by this method in the analysis of certain specialized cases of separated flow. (Author).

Book excerpt: The IUTAM Symposium on Boundary-Layer Separation, suggested by the UK National Committee of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and supported by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, was held at University College London on August 26-28, 1986. The proposed theme and scope of the Symposium were designed to help to bring about the necessary interaction between experimentalists, computationalists and theoreticians for the furthering of understanding in this challenging subject. The talks and discussions were aimed at representing the very wide range and application of separating-flow phenomena, which often substantially affect the whole of fluid dynamics at medium to large Reynolds numbers, covering in particular both laminar and turbulent flow, steady or unsteady, two- or three-dimensional, small or large-scale, incompressible or compressible, external or internal, from the experimental, computational and theoretical standpoints. It was intended that about 80 scientists would participate in the Symposium, with about 25 talks being delivered, to which poster sessions with 8 contributions were added subsequently. All the speakers and poster presenters were selected by the scientific committee, although two late replacements of speakers were required. Fruitful discussions, well led by the session chairmen, took place formally after each talk and after the poster sessions and informally on other occasions including the social events. The present proceedings of the Symposium appear to reflect much of the current state of experimental, computational and theoretical work and progress in boundary-layer separation. We hope that they provide also ideas, questions and stimulation, in addition to major recent developments.

Book excerpt: The problem of turbulent boundary layer separation due to an adverse pressure gradient is an old but still important problem in many fluid flow devices. The directionally-sensitive laser anemometer now provides the ability to accurately measure the instantaneous flow direction and magnitude. The experimental results described in this report are concerned with a nominally two-dimensional separating turbulent boundary layer for an airfoil-type flow in which the flow was accelerated and then decelerated until separation. Upstream of separation single and cross-wire hot-wire anemometer measurements are also presented. Measurements obtained in the separated zone with a directionally-sensitive laser anemometer system are presented. Results lead to significant conclusions about the nature of the separated flow when the thickness of the backflow region is small as compared with the shear layer thickness. The backflow is controlled by the large-scale outer region flow. The small mean backflow does not come from far downstream, but appears to be supplied intermittently by large-scale structures as they pass through the separated flow. Downstream of fully-developed separation, the mean backflow appears to be divided into three layers: a viscous layer nearest the wall that is dominated by the turbulent flow unsteadiness but with little Reynolds shearing stress effects; a rather flat intermediate layer that seems to act as an overlap region between the viscous wall and outer regions; and the outer backflow region that is really part of the large-scaled outer region flow.

Book excerpt: In 1975 the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Republic of Germany signed a Data Exchange Agreement numbered AF-75-G-7440 entitled 'Viscous and Interacting Flow Fields.' The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.
