Book excerpt: This work is dedicated to building and understanding of how this country's only government subsidized arts support organization came into existence. Readers will find a brief narrative on the relationship between the United States Government and the precarious business of the cultural arts. A survey was conducted to identify the range of theatre organizations that apply for and receive funding. Readers will also find a good look at the NEA Theatre program and that branch of the Endowment's selection process. The author's conclusion offers some suggestions for improvement. In addition, there is a section on the NEA's legislative history and a summary on the «state of the arts, » particularly for the smaller, newer and experimental groups.

Book Synopsis Arts in Corrections by : Grady Hillman
Download or read book Arts in Corrections written by Grady Hillman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arts in Corrections, the author—a poet, translator and teacher—takes readers on a chronological journey through an annotated selection of 24 of his own publications from 1981 to 2014 which recount his experiences teaching, consulting and documenting US arts programs in prisons, jails and juvenile facilities. Anyone interested in corrections and arts-in-corrections will be drawn in by the poetic sensibility Hillman brings to his writing. Readers will gain a historical and personal perspective not only into correctional arts programming in the US over the last 40 years, but also the institutional transformations in policy, culture, populations, economics, and the criminological mission expansion into other institutional settings like K-12 education. Original essays, articles, monographs and poems are interspersed with recent annotations to deliver not only a top-down view of the correctional system but also the author’s personal journey of "discouragement and hope" from work conducted in approximately 200 adult and juvenile facilities in 30 states and six countries. This comprehensive book is essential reading for a broad cross-section of international readers interested in and involved in the arts-in-corrections field. With two million individuals behind bars in the US at any given time, the profile of arts programs in prisons and jails is rising and interest in criminal-justice matters more generally is increasing. This includes not only arts-in-corrections professionals, policy makers, students, researchers, advocates and academics, but professionals in multiple other fields as well as the general public.

Book Synopsis Audience Development by : National Endowment for the Arts. Research Division
Download or read book Audience Development written by National Endowment for the Arts. Research Division and published by Arts Research Division. This book was released on 1981 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several specific objectives have had wide recognition in the arts community, namely: to broaden the audience for the performing arts, to determine the applicability of sophisticated tools of marketing to the problem of generating demand for the arts, to find the best predictors of arts attendance, and to develop strategies that will appeal to those who, by these predictors, are potential attenders. This research report summarizes a study conducted in 1977 by Alan R. Andreasen and Russell W. Belk. The investigators collected new audience data in a carefully controlled group of surveys in four southern cities (Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Columbia, and Memphis), and applied to these data a number of sophisticated measuring and marketing techniques to discover efficient and effective methods for inducing marginal attenders of the performing arts to become frequent patrons. Although no hitherto untried means to this end were uncovered, this publication makes advanced techniques more comprehensible and accessible to arts administrators. In addition, by analyzing characteristics that move or do not move people to attend performing arts events, and from that analysis deriving strategies capable of altering factors that lead to nonattendance, enough practical conclusions were reached to recommend an extended program of experimentation in the four cities studied.
