He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sign of Flame Through the gray fog of an autumn morning a flock of birds took flight; sweeping now, as if in fare well, close to the firs, so recently their home - rising now to a goodly height, directing their flight toward the south, and disappearing slowly in the veiled distance. The gloomy eyes of a man standing at a window of the large castle-like mansion situated at the edge of the forest, followed this flight. He was of tall stature and powerful in physique the erect bearing would have betrayed the soldier even without the uniform which he wore: his fea tures not handsome but strong; hair light, and eyes blue; in short, a typical German in appearance; but something like a shadow rested on those features, and the high brow bore deeper furrows than the years seemed to warrant. How he must laugh at the state of the old Yard, with never a clue to settle down upon, never a thread to pick up and unravel! All of which is unbusinesslike of me, I've no doubt. Book excerpt: Out of the Flames is an extraordinary story - providing testament to the power of ideas, the enduring legacy of books, and the triumph of individual courage. Out of the Flames tracks the history of The Chrisitianismi Restituto, examining Michael Servetus's life and times and the politics of the first information during the sixteenth century. The Chrisitianismi Restituto, a heretical work of biblical scholarship, written in 1553, aimed to refute the orthodox Christianity that Michael Servetus' old colleague, John Calvin, supported. After the book spread through the ranks of Protestant hierarchy, Servetus was tried and agonizingly burned at the stake, the last known copy of the Restitutio chained to his leg. Servetus's execution marked a turning point in the quest for freedom of expression, due largely to the development of the printing press and the proliferation of books in Renaissance Europe. Three copies of the Restitutio managed to survive the burning, despite every effort on the part of his enemies to destroy them. As a result, the book became almost a surrogate for its author, going into hiding and relying on covert distribution until it could be read freely, centuries later. Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone follow the clandestine journey of the three copies through the subsequent centuries and explore its author's legacy and influence over the thinkers that shared his spirit and genius, such as Leibniz, Voltaire, Rousseau, Jefferson, Clarence Dorrow, and William Osler.

Book excerpt: Fire, one of three new QUEER FILM CLASSICS this fall, delves into the controversial 1996 lesbian love story by Indian-born director Deepa Mehta. Set in a contemporary middle-class Hindu household in the heart of Delhi, Fire is the story of Radha and Sita, the wives of two brothers, who fall in love with one another. Crisis overtakes the extended family when a servant discovers the relationship and tells one of the husbands; overcoming both a literal and allegorical 'trial by fire,' the two women leave their marriages to make a life together. The film premiered to great acclaim in 1996, and travelled the international circuit before being finally released in India in 1999. The consequences of the films Indian premiere were both profound and provocative: outraged by the film's explicit depiction of a lesbian relationship, protesters went on a rampage, tearing down posters, vandalizing cinemas showing the film, and disrupting screenings in Delhi and Bombay, setting off a maelstrom of public discourse on issues such as homosexuality and freedom of speech in India. Director Deepa Mehta and the two leading actresses were targeted for attack and harassment by extremists of the Hindu Right. This book examines the controversy that divided a nation, but which ultimately led to counter protests among the films supporters, resulting in its successful and uninterrupted run in Indian theaters. The book also considers Fire's scathing attack on both heterosexism and Hindu practices in India that oppress and marginalize women, as well as its revolutionary treatment of female characters, whose traditional duties are imbued with an unprecedented sensuality.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Flame: A Play The Time of this Act is in the early dawn of Egypt, when the pyramids were new and human motive was little mercenary, when religion and philosophy were one and did not claim to be other than the Explanation of Life and Nature. This was before theology, when ceremonies were known to be but symbols and priests were but teachers and friendly guides on the Way. It was a time analogous to that still earlier time in which man ceased to be Androgyne, and the De-volutionary forces were still accentuating the Separation of the sexes. Hence Asceticism was logically the way of knowledge and power. [A time remote and a Condition now Reversed.] The Scene is in a chamber of the Great Pyramid. A little to the right of center is an Altar on which burns steadily a Blue Flame. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
