A person sees a problem, takes in the available information, and tries a solution. It is in that process - whether the goal is understanding a Shakespeare play, figuring out an algorithm, or writing a theory of history - that engaged learners make breakthroughs, be those breakthroughs individual, group, or societal. In this book, three experienced practitioners describe how to re-imagine teaching spaces - conventional schools - as learning spaces, spaces where risk is encouraged, celebrated, and actually taught in every area of endeavor: from how, where, or if to sit, to how to find the right pathway to learning. In bringing the stories of a central office Innovation director together with an elementary teacher and administrator and a veteran secondary teacher leader, Education Reimagined: A Space for Risk demonstrates how fundamental change is possible in any school

This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I've been a practicing psychologist in an outpatient setting for over thirty-two years. I run into eight conditions almost every day (addictions, anxiety, ADHD/learning disabilities, assertiveness, children’s behaviors, mood disorders, relationships and self-esteem). Procrastination is not a major mental illness, but it is a "condition" we all experience. Its especially difficult when someone else procrastinates and we depend upon them to complete something on time. If you are reading this, chances are either you procrastinate or someone you know does. You probably know, first hand, the difficulties you encounter, or hear about it from others. The symptoms vary but usually include waiting until the last minute, setting appointments too late, filing taxes at midnight on April 15th, driving the car into the ground before changing the oil, putting off that term-paper until the day before its due, and getting used to the mess in the house because cleaning can wait until tomorrow. Are there dishes still in the sink from three days ago? How about that laundry? These are all the warning signs of procrastination. Some are more dramatic and harmful, like not completing the project on time at work. Others are chronic and annoying. If you have any of these signs, this ebook is for you. In this ebook, I start out with a discussion of misconceptions about procrastinators. For example, procrastinators are really not lazy. But they do have great difficulty seeking help (besides getting around to making that appointment...). Next, I delve into the underlying dynamics. It turns out that procrastination is really a deficiency in resolving ambivalence, as are two other common conditions (guilt and failure to forgive). So, I examine ambivalence in depth, especially in regards to values, feelings, thoughts as they play out in our either conscious or unconscious experience. Ambivalence and its manifestations are about the conflict(s) between these elements. The indecision and anxiety that sits atop the ambivalence is central to procrastination, in this case playing out in behavior. Understand this and you will trick yourself less and do more, more often. This leads to a discussion of suppression and repression, in relation to time. There are lots of small examples sprinkled in the text. These are included so the reader can determine what is normal behavior and what is not. This will help in case you are considering seeing a professional. Many folks like a little background, so next I delve into what the researchers have found about procrastination. Its not what you think. It has to do with how we think about thinking. Here you will find terms such as hyperbolic reasoning, metacognition, present bias and time inconsistency. These are in contrast to what most people think of procrastinators--that they are immature, impulsive and passive-aggressive. (Some are, some aren't). There are some ingenious experiments that have been done that I cover. Find out about the "Stupid Monkey Brain." Next I look at the clinical side, and how to fix procrastination. What questions to ask, and at what depth. There follows a discussion of the techniques to externalize the findings in ways that undermine procrastination. Last, I provide two in-depth examples and go through the process of figuring out what might be going on.. Lastly, there is a reader submitted example, that is sort of a final test. (No grades are given). Clients are very enthusiastic about this ebook, probably because everyone can use some work on this issue, especially if you happen to be in a relationship. (Living or working with a procrastinator is sometimes quite a challenge...) Like my other publications, this ebook has no fat. It has about 30 pages. Think of it as a "Cliffs Notes" publication. It's "sort of" a quick read (about two hours for the first reading), because I have to explain some stuff using terms you probably haven't heard before. But its all laid out in everyday language, just like what you're reading now. Nobody has published what I present as the glue that makes these concepts work. I think this is why my ebook does a better job. It's process as well as content driven. The theory I espouse is different from standard explanations or other literature in this field. It works better. I know, because I've been using it with clients for years. I've put together a hard hitting, direct "How To" manual. My research has not turned up another ebook that does what mine does.

Book excerpt: “HOW DID THIS GET HERE?” This fashionable question made famous in the late eighties was the sole reins for me to start the compilation of poems in this book. I have no idea ‘HOW’ this got here ... but once it was ‘HERE’ ... I was determined to make it ... at least ... memorable. There’s a little back story to this compendium or my involvement in poetry. Frankly, I’m not truly a fan. Until very recently these flypaper words were just doodles and scribbles on torn paper and tatted notebooks, until a friend read one or two and remarked rather innocuously, if I had any others and wouldn’t it be nice if there was a collection of them in one place. Well I have taken her advice and made sort of an anthology of them. They are from different periods of my life, so I hope you will please bear with me. What I knew as a young man, like most things I didn’t understand until I was well into my forties. What are the odds of actually writing scribbles and then be fortunate to compile them and have them published? Well this is a chance for my words to have a mouthpiece. Meaning one of you out there. There’s nothing better than being part of the echo of that nameless but great representative.

Scott Jordan, Euni Kim, Melanie Loehwing, Jaclyn S. Olson, A. Susan Owen, Stephen E. Rahko, Nick J. Sciullo, Arthur D. Soto-Vásquez, and Erika M. Thomas The events surrounding the 2014 killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, marked a watershed moment in US history. Though this instance of police brutality represented only the latest amid decades of similar unjust patterns, it came to symbolize state complicity in the deployment of violence to maintain racial order. Rupturing Rhetoric: The Politics of Race and Popular Culture since Ferguson responds to the racial rhetoric of American popular culture in the years since Brown's death. Through close readings of popular media produced during the late Obama and Trump eras, this volume details the influence of historical and contemporary representations of race on public discourse in America. Using Brown’s death and the ensuing protests as a focal point, contributors argue that Ferguson marks the rupture of America’s postracial fantasy. An ideology premised on colorblindness, the notion of the “postracial” suggests that the United States has largely achieved racial equality and that race is no longer a central organizing category in American society. Postracialism is partly responsible for ahistorical, romanticized narratives of slavery, Jim Crow segregation, and American exceptionalism. The legitimacy of this fantasy, the editors contend, was the first casualty of the tanks, tear gas, and rubber bullets wielded against protesters during the summer of 2014. From these protests emerged a new political narrative organized around #BlackLivesMatter, which directly challenged the fantasy of a postracial American society. Essays in Rupturing Rhetoric cover such texts as Fresh Off the Boat; Hamilton; Green Book; NPR’s American Anthem; Lovecraft Country; Disney remakes of Dumbo, The Lion King, and Lady and the Tramp; BlacKkKlansman; Crazy Rich Asians; The Hateful Eight; and Fences. As a unified body of work, the collection interrogates the ways contemporary media in American popular culture respond to and subvert the postracial fantasy underlying the politics of our time.

Find out why Adam Grant says "If every leader took the ideas in this book seriously, the world would be a less miserable, more productive place." Every organization is plagued by destructive friction. Yet some forms of friction are incredibly useful, and leaders who attempt to improve workplace efficiency often make things even worse. Drawing from seven years of hands-on research, The Friction Project by bestselling authors Robert I. Sutton and Huggy Rao teaches readers how to become “friction fixers.” Sutton and Rao kick off the book by unpacking how skilled friction fixers think and act like trustees of others’ time. They provide friction forensics to help readers identify where to avert and repair bad organizational friction and where to maintain and inject good friction. Then their help pyramid shows how friction fixers do their work, from reframing friction troubles they can’t fix right now, so they feel less threatening, to designing and repairing organizations. The heart of the book digs into the causes and solutions for five of the most common and damaging friction troubles: oblivious leaders, addition sickness, broken connections, jargon monoxide, and fast and frenzied people and teams. Sound familiar? Sutton and Rao are here to help. They wrap things up with lessons for leading your own friction project, including linking little things to big things; the power of civility, caring, and love for propelling designs and repairs; and embracing the mess that is an inevitable part of the process (while still trying to clean it up).

Book excerpt: An unprecedented look inside the world of baseball scouting and evaluation from two of the industry's top prospect analysts For the modern Major League team, player evaluation is a complex, multi-pronged, high-tech pursuit. But far from becoming obsolete in this environment—as Michael Lewis' Moneyball once forecast—the role of the scout in today's game has evolved and even expanded. Rather than being the antithesis of a data-driven approach, scouting now represents an essential analytical component in a team's arsenal. Future Value is a thorough dive into baseball's changing world of talent acquisition and development, a world with its own language, methods, metrics, and madness. From rural high schools to elite amateur showcases, from the back fields of spring training to major league draft rooms, Eric Longenhagen and Kiley McDaniel break down the key systems and techniques used to assess talent. It's a process that has moved beyond the quintessential stopwatches and radar guns to include statistical models, countless measurable indicators, and a broader international reach. ?Practical and probing, discussing wide-ranging topics from tool grades to front office politics, this is an illuminating exploration of how to watch baseball and see the future.
