Book Synopsis Reason's Muse by : Geneviève Fraisse
Download or read book Reason's Muse written by Geneviève Fraisse and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1994-05-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French Revolution proclaimed the equality of all human beings, yet women remained less than equal in the new society. The exclusion of women at the birth of modern democracy required considerable justification, and by tracing the course of this reasoning through early nineteenth-century texts, Genevieve Fraisse maps a moment of crisis in the history of sexual difference. Through an analysis of literary, religious, legal, philosophical, and medical texts, Fraisse links a range of positions on women's proper role in society to specific historical and rhetorical circumstances. She shows how the Revolution marked a sharp break in the way women were represented in language, as traditional bantering about the "war of the sexes" gave way to serious discussions of the political and social meanings of sexual difference. Following this discussion on three different planes—the economical, the political, and the biological—Fraisse looks at the exclusion of women against the backdrop of democracy's inevitable lie: the affirmation of an equality so abstract it was impossible to concretely apply. This study of the place of sexual equality in the founding moment of democracy offers insight into a persistent question: whether female emancipation is to be found through the achievement of equality with men or in the celebration of female difference.

Book Synopsis AN10 - Collection of Numbered Speeches by : Tomás Morales y Durán
Download or read book AN10 - Collection of Numbered Speeches written by Tomás Morales y Durán and published by Libros de Verdad. This book was released on 2024-03-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tenth book of the Aṅguttara Nikāya, the Collection of the Numbered Discourses of the Buddha, collects 746 suttas or discourses whose subject matter is centered on groups of ten topics. The most frequent are the eight components of the eightfold path expanded to ten and also ten components of ethics. This book is especially thick because of the continuous repetitions upon repetitions with very slight variations. The volume is also notable for including extensive content on monastic discipline. As the most outstanding sutta we have AN 10.26: With Kāḷī. Fierce criticism of the Brahmanical meditation methods called "kasinas" which, in early medieval times, were included by Buddhaghosa in his entrance work to a famous Sinhalese monastery and which today some claim as "effective" methods of meditation within Buddhism. The most interesting suttas in this volume are: AN 10.6: Contemplation. Perceiving without perceiving. One of the most curious things one feels when entering current. AN 10.14: Emotional Sterility. Doubts about the Master cause emotional sterility. AN 10.19: Abodes of the Noble Ones (I). When one stops searching. AN 10.29: Kosala (I). Tremendous criticism of wrong practice. AN 10.31: With Upāli. The reasons for the establishment of the monastic code. AN 10.64: Faith. On those who have entered the stream. AN 10.65: Happiness (I). Family and friends who get together and annoy you. AN 10.76: Three things. A beautiful sutta on renunciations. AN 10.92: Dangers. Teaching on perishability and faith. AN 10.108: Physicians: Interesting sutta on physicians and the list of diseases known and treated with varying degrees of success. This book does not contain false suttas. In summary, this time the arduous and exhaustive work of research and reconstruction in comparative linguistics has been especially dense and thick.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecclesiastes is a persuasive speech with a rhetoric so unique that it can be easily misunderstood. It speaks powerfully to believers as well as nonbelievers because it addresses the question of the meaning of life in the most satisfying way. The heart of this book is an expositional commentary that interprets Ecclesiastes as authoritative Scripture. It seeks to recover the rhetoric of the speech in terms of its comprehensive message on the meaning of life as well as its compelling force to get the message across. Preceding the expositional commentary is an introduction to Ecclesiastes that presents a new approach to outlining and reading Ecclesiastes as a coherent speech. It also presents an overview of the "forest"--the overall rhetorical flow of the speech from beginning to end. This is to prevent one from getting lost when immersed in the "trees" of the expositional commentary. Following the expositional commentary are two topical studies to give Ecclesiastes the breadth and depth of coverage it deserves. The first is an interdisciplinary exposition on the meaning of life. The second is an interpretive essay to defend exegetically the interpretation of Ecclesiastes as a coherent speech.

This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the contribution of Father Dumitru Stăniloae, the most renowned Romanian Orthodox theologian and one of the leading figures of the Modern Orthodox Theologians, to the interpretation and modern assessment of the writings of Gregory Palamas in a critical manner. The introduction of the book details the life and Patristic contribution of Father Dumitru Stăniloae. Although the general view is that Stăniloae was mainly a Systematic theologian, the reality is that he was also a Patristic scholar. All the chapters contained here include an analysis of different books and studies of Father Stăniloae and how he developed his Neo-Palamite Synthesis during his lifetime. Stăniloae’s results are presented in a chronological manner to allow easy identification of the different views that he held concerning the writings of Gregory Palamas during the extended period he dedicated to his research. This book is addressed to academics, theologians and persons who take an interest in the study of Eastern Orthodoxy and significant Modern Orthodox theologians and offers them an intriguing analysis of what concerns the Patristic contribution of Father Dumitru Stăniloae.
Book Synopsis The Art of Philosophy by : Susanna Berger
Download or read book The Art of Philosophy written by Susanna Berger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-28 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to explore the role of images in philosophical thought and teaching in the early modern period Delving into the intersections between artistic images and philosophical knowledge in Europe from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries, The Art of Philosophy shows that the making and study of visual art functioned as important methods of philosophical thinking and instruction. From frontispieces of books to monumental prints created by philosophers in collaboration with renowned artists, Susanna Berger examines visual representations of philosophy and overturns prevailing assumptions about the limited function of the visual in European intellectual history. Rather than merely illustrating already existing philosophical concepts, visual images generated new knowledge for both Aristotelian thinkers and anti-Aristotelians, such as Descartes and Hobbes. Printmaking and drawing played a decisive role in discoveries that led to a move away from the authority of Aristotle in the seventeenth century. Berger interprets visual art from printed books, student lecture notebooks, alba amicorum (friendship albums), broadsides, and paintings, and examines the work of such artists as Pietro Testa, Léonard Gaultier, Abraham Bosse, Dürer, and Rembrandt. In particular, she focuses on the rise and decline of the "plural image," a genre that was popular among early modern philosophers. Plural images brought multiple images together on the same page, often in order to visualize systems of logic, metaphysics, natural philosophy, or moral philosophy. Featuring previously unpublished prints and drawings from the early modern period and lavish gatefolds, The Art of Philosophy reveals the essential connections between visual commentary and philosophical thought.

Book Synopsis Strength of Mind by : Jacob L. Goodson
Download or read book Strength of Mind written by Jacob L. Goodson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher education in the twenty-first century should bring together freedom and knowledge with courage and hope. Why these four concepts? As Goodson argues in Strength of Mind, higher education in the twenty-first century offers preparation for ordinary life. Freedom and knowledge serve as the conditions for cultivating courage and hope within one’s ordinary life. More specifically, courage and hope ought to be understood as the virtues required for enjoying ordinary life. If college-educated citizens wish to hold onto the concepts of courage and hope, however, then both courage and hope need to be understood as intellectual virtues. As a moral virtue, courage has become outdated. As a theological virtue, hope violates the logic of the golden mean. Focusing on intellectual virtues also requires shifting from moral perfectionism to rational perfectionism. Rational perfectionism involves keeping impossible demands in view for oneself while constantly and continually striving for one’s “unattained but attainable self.” Goodson defends these arguments by learning from the bits of wisdom found within American Transcendentalism (Emerson, Cavell), German Idealism (Kant, Hegel), Jewish philosophy (Maimonides, Spinoza, Putnam), neo-pragmatism (Putnam, Rorty, West), post-modern theories about pedagogy (Nietzsche, Foucault, Rorty), and secular accounts of perfectionism (Murdoch, Cavell).
Book Synopsis Project Appraisal and Macroeconomic Policy by : T. van der Burg
Download or read book Project Appraisal and Macroeconomic Policy written by T. van der Burg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For researchers and makers of policy, integrates methods of appraising projects and evaluating macroeconomic policy so that the macroeconomic consequences of particular projects can be taken into account. After reviewing the relevant background, develops a new method of analysis and applies it to a wind energy project in the Netherlands. Shows how an orthodox Keynesian macroeconomic model finds an overall negative effect from a large public expenditure of the average type, but a more positive effect from the specific wind project. Concludes that a selected portfolio of investment projects can stimulate expenditures without the disadvantages of an orthodox Keynesian policy.
