Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Reading Book This is primarily a Reading Book, and the lessons have been selected and adapted with the object of assisting the children in the second classes of our Canadian schools to become intelligent and expressive readers; but, while this purpose has never been lost sight of, the Editors have endeavored to select lessons that shall also serve the pur pose of inculcating love to God and admiration for the works of nature of nurturing filial affection and other kindred virtues, and of creating an interest in the animal world. It is hoped, therefore, that as the book is read, the pupils may become not only good readers and fond of reading, but that good principles and pure tastes may be instilled into their minds. It is intended that the words at the head of the lessons, in the syllabi cation and accentuation of which Worcester's Dictionary has been the authority, should be pronounced in the most distinct manner possible, first by the teacher, and then by the members of the class, in concert and individually, before any attempt is made to read the lesson. This is necessary, in order that the pupil, when attempting to read, may give his full attention to bringing out the true expression. Too little consideration is usually given to this, the most important part of the work of teaching reading. In many of our schools reading classes are frequently classes in pronunciation only. No effort should be spared to correct this serious fault. The pupils ought to be thoroughly familiar with all the words of the lesson before attempting to read it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Reader Moreover, in common with the preceding books of the Series, the Second Reader avoids hindrances to progress; treats phonic work as a means, not as an end; aims to avoid over-analysis, the excessive use of diacritical marks, and the fatal substitution of word-getting for true reading. The form of literature? Rbest adapted to the Second Reader stage is, as every one agrees, the story. This may be either prose or poetry; short or long;' fable, anecdote, or fairy tale; fact or fancy; but it must be a well knit whole with its parts in due relation; and it must obea true, vivid, and interesting picture of life, - life as it appears, or should appear, to the eyes of childhood. It is' of such stories that the reading mate rial in this book chiefly consists. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Method Readers: A First Reader This book, the second of the natural method readers, is designed to proceed along the lines laid down in the primer, and gradually to enable the pupil to gain the ability to read for himself. The Mother Goose rhymes, which were so freely used in the primer, are made the connecting link with the higher work, the simple folk myths and the other stories that make their appeal to the child six or seven years old. While the language has to be limited to the exigencies of a comparatively small but growing vocab ulary, an endeavor has been made to preserve the lit crary avor of folk narration. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading Made Easy for Foreigners: Third Reader The pupils of this class may be considered as hav ing passed the transition stage of which mention was made in the Second Reader, and as having entered upon the last stage in acquiring the English language. They have not only acquired a considerable vocabulary, but have now a practical mastery of our vernacular. They use English in their conversa tion; in short, they have acquired the power of ex pressing their feelings and thoughts in the English language. Notwithstanding all this, they are con scious of the fact that their language is less idiomatic than that of the native born, and their power over the written expression is wofully weak. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Easy Road to Reading Second Reader In this, the third book of the Easy Road to Reading series, the leading characteristic is the longer story, subdivided into convenient lesson units. The child ready to enter the Second Reader is now old enough to sustain interest for a longer time and to enjoy the working' out of a very simple plot. To this end, a few longer stories have been used, rather than many short stories of little point or interest. These have been varied by the introduction of short poems that are worth while - worth reading and worth remembering. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Year Language Reader The language reader series is, as the name implies, a set of graded school readers in which one of the definite objects is the teaching of the language as well as the reading of good literature. This purpose has been more fully stated in the prefaces to the advanced numbers. The present volume contains but little besides the reading matter itself. It seems best at this stage of the work not\to complicate the page by the introduction of matter auxiliary to the study. Such assistance should be, and usually is, given by the teacher. It may, therefore, not be amiss to state several objects which the teacher should have in mind in this second year of the work in language. Book excerpt: Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!
