Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last thirty years, gamma-ray bursts have grown from an oddity to a central position in astrophysics. Not only are they the largest explosions since the big bang, capable of flooding most of the universe with gamma-rays, but their brilliance serves as a backlight that can illuminate the cosmos far deeper into the early universe than any other object. Their unpredictability has forced researchers to use extreme measures to observe them: completely autonomous satellites and robotic ground-based telescopes. Their bizarre physical properties have pushed us to develop new theories of astrophysical explosions. Topics include: global properties of GRBs; X-ray flashes; ultra-high energy gamma-rays, neutrinos, gravity waves; prompt emission and early afterglows; relativistic jets and polarization; GRB030329; GRB progenitors; GRB connection to supernovae; dark versus bright GRBs; late afterglows; GRBs and cosmology; general observations; general theory; analysis and observation techniques; present satellites; Swift satellite; future satellites; and robotic observing systems.

Book excerpt: Nobel Symposium 129 on Neutrino Physics was held at Haga Slott in Enköping, Sweden during August 19-24, 2004. Invited to the symposium were around 40 globally leading researchers in the field of neutrino physics, both experimental and theoretical. The dominant theme of the lectures was neutrino oscillations, which after several years were recently verified by results from the Super-Kamiokande detector in Kamioka, Japan and the SNO detector in Sudbury, Canada. Discussion focused especially on effects of neutrino oscillations derived from the presence of matter and the fact that three different neutrinos exist. Since neutrino oscillations imply that neutrinos have mass, this is the first experimental observation that fundamentally deviates from the standard model of particle physics. This is a challenge to both theoretical and experimental physics. The various oscillation parameters will be determined with increased precision in new, specially designed experiments. Theoretical physics is working intensively to insert the knowledge that neutrinos have mass into the theoretical models that describe particle physics. The lectures provided a very good description of the intensive situation in the field right now. The topics discussed also included mass models for neutrinos, neutrinos in extra dimensions as well as the “seesaw mechanism,” which provides a good description of why neutrino masses are so small. This book is A4 size and in full color.

Book excerpt: This proceedings contains the papers from both the poster and oral presentations presented at the Workshop celebrating the first year of the HETE mission. The HETE mission, launched on 9 October 2000, has dramatically quickened the pace of GRB discoveries. By disseminating accurate burst coordinates to the astronomical community within a minute of the burst onset, HETE has made possible the panchromatic observation of the early, bright phases of the relativistic fireball expansion in several GRB afterglows. The scientific program covered the rapidly expanding range of GRB research, with roughly half of the sessions being devoted to prompt burst emission, and half to burst afterglows, both from observational and theoretical perspectives. In particular, 26 papers presented in the section on the HETE Satellite Mission comprise both a tutorial on the spacecraft and its instruments, as well as a summary of early scientific results. In addition, special sessions, such as the session devoted to soft gamma repeaters, were devoted to future missions and instrumentation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the dissemination of information of permanent interest in thermo-mechanics applications and engineering technology. Contributions have clear relevance to industrial device and a relatively straightforward or feasible path to application. Chapters are sought that have long-term relevance to specific applications including convective heat transfer, fluid mechanics, combustion, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, turbomachinery and multi-phase flows. In fact, many aspects in industrial operations and daily life are closely related to thermo-mechanics processes. Along with the development of computer industry and the advancement of numerical methods, solid foundation in both hardware and software has been established to study the processes by using numerical simulation methods, which play important roles in the ways of extending research topics, reducing research costs, discovering new phenomena, and developing new technologies. The presented case studies and development approaches aim to provide the readers, such as engineers and PhD students, with basic and applied studies broadly related to the Thermo-Mechanics Applications and Engineering Technology.

Book excerpt: This book contains the Proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Particle Physics Beyond the Standard Model - BEYOND THE DESERT 2003. Emphasis at BEYOND03 was put on supergravity, which had its twentieth birthday that year, on neutrino physics and dark matter search, and on gravitation and cosmology, and some other very important fields. The book resents a timely and valuable overview of the status and future potential and trends in theoretical and experimental particle physics, in the complementary sectors of accelerator, non-accelerator and space physics.

Book excerpt: The scope of the book is to give an overview of the history of astroparticle physics, starting with the discovery of cosmic rays (Victor Hess, 1912) and its background (X-ray, radioactivity). The book focusses on the ways in which physics changes in the course of this history. The following changes run parallel, overlap, and/or interact: - Discovery of effects like X-rays, radioactivity, cosmic rays, new particles but also progress through non-discoveries (monopoles) etc. - The change of the description of nature in physics, as consequence of new theoretical questions at the beginning of the 20th century, giving rise to quantum physics, relativity, etc. - The change of experimental methods, cooperations, disciplinary divisions. With regard to the latter change, a main topic of the book is to make the specific multi-diciplinary features of astroparticle physics clear.

It covers the many different aspects connecting particle physics with astrophysics and cosmology and introduces astrophysics using numerous experimental findings recently obtained through the study of high-energy particles. Taking a systematic approach, it comprehensively presents experimental aspects from the most advanced laboratories and detectors, as well as the theoretical background. The book is aimed at graduate students and post-graduate researchers with a basic understanding of particle and nuclear physics. It will also be of interest to particle physicists working in accelerator/collider physics who are keen to understand the mechanisms of the largest accelerators in the Universe. The book draws on the extensive lecturing experience of Professor Maurizio Spurio from the University of Bologna.

Book excerpt: The C2CR series provides a forum in which physicists from different, yet closely related, sub-disciplines get together and explore the interfaces and overlaps. The overlaps between various approaches to Dark Matter, in direct searches, in Cosmology and in Colliders are all too obvious. These issues are highlighted in the challenges faced by those who develop simulation packages for various physics processes.
