Book excerpt: We present preliminary results on the time dependence of B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] and B[sub d][sup 0] -[bar B][sub d][sup 0] mixing using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z[sup 0] decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC. The analyses take advantage of the excellent decay length resolution of the CCD vertex detector. The B or[bar B] production flavor is determined by exploiting the large forward-backward asymmetry of polarized Z[sup 0][yields] b[bar b] decays. This flavor tag is enhanced by incorporating additional information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay. The B[sub d][sup 0] -[bar B][sub d][sup 0] mixing analysis uses the charge of high momentum kaons to identify the B or[bar B] decay flavor. The result is[Delta]m[sub d]= 0.503[+-] 0.028(stat)[+-] 0.020(syst) ps[sup -1]. The results of three separate B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing analyses are presented. These analyses determine the B decay flavor using the lepton charge in B semileptonic decays, the charge of fully reconstructed D[sub s] decays, and the charge difference between topologically reconstructed B and D decays. The three analyses are combined to set a lower limit on the B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] oscillation frequency of 12.0 ps[sup -1] at 95% CL.

Book excerpt: We have performed a sensitive search for B[sub s][sup 0] -[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing using a sample of 400,000 hadronic Z[sup 0] decays collected by the SLD experiment at the SLC between 1996 and 1998. B[sub s][sup 0] and[bar B][sub s][sup 0] events were produced by Z[sup 0][yields] b[bar b] decays where each side hadronized independently to b hadrons. The analysis determines the b hadron flavor at production by exploiting the large polarized forward-backward asymmetry of the b quark as well as information from the hemisphere opposite that of the reconstructed B decay. The final state b quark flavor is determined by the charge of a high p[sub T] lepton. A novel, highly efficient vertexing technique has been developed to locate the B decay vertex by exploiting the high p[sub T] lepton and the semileptonic decay topology. No significant mixing signal was found and the following ranges of the oscillation frequency of B[sub s][sup 0]-[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing are excluded at 95% CL from the analysis presented in this thesis:[Delta]m[sub s]

Book excerpt: Quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the electroweak theory and general relativity currently give an accurate description of all known phenomena in fundamental physics. No experimental facts are known that disagree with these theories. The Standard Model (SM) incorporates QCD and the electroweak theory. Its matter content consists of spin 1/2 quarks and leptons, and spin 1 gauge bosons. They are considered to be elementary, meaning that they have no constituents. There are six quark flavors (up, down, charm, strange, top and bottom) and in addition to its spin each of the quarks has a second degree of freedom, called color, which can have three different values. There are also six different leptons, e, [nu][sub e], [mu], [nu][sub[mu]], [tau] and[nu][sub[tau]]. Forces between fermions due to the electroweak interaction are mediated by exchanges of four gauge bosons ([gamma], W[sup+], W[sup -] and Z[sup 0]); and the forces due to the strong interaction, or QCD, are mediated by eight gauge bosons, the gluons. We analyze a dataset of approximately 355 pb{sup -1} from proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected in 2002-2004 with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron Collider. Samples of both fully reconstructed B{sub s} {yields} D{sub s}(3){pi}, and partially reconstructed, B{sub s} {yields} D{sub s}{ell}X, decays have been studied. A combination of opposite side tagging algorithms has been used to determine the flavor of the B{sub s} mesons at production time. Information about the oscillation frequency of the system, {Delta}m{sub s}, is obtained by performing an amplitude scan of the data, from which an exclusion limit {delta}m{sub s} {ge} 8.6ps{sup -1} ({at} 95% C.L.), with a measured sensitivity of 13.0 ps{sup -1} has been derived; Combination with previously available measurements increases the world exclusion limit from 14.5 ps{sup -1} to 16.6 ps{sup -1} ({at} 95% C.L.).
