Book excerpt: X is exasperated. Every other letter in the alphabet has so much to do and plays such important roles in making words. X expects more. He calls for a vote on a new alphabet (gasp!). According to the Alphabet Constitution, X has every right to question the status quo. But the night before the vote, X is plagued by dreams of what could happen if he were to take on another letter?s job. S has to run around a lot making singular words plural, except sometimes he isn?t needed at all, and sometimes he needs to bring along another letter . . . it was all very confusing. Then X thought he?d like to be E. E was very important and very useful. E agreed. But E was exhausted. He was in thousands of words and constantly busy. X didn?t think E?s job was a good idea after all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Studies is currently going through a deep transformation, preparing itself for the launch into the twenty-first century. The present volume, which is dedicated to Douwe Fokkema on the occasion of his retirement from Utrecht University, captures this transformation in a number of squibs by a select international group of scholars. Topics dealt with are: canon formation, conventions, cultural relativism, hermeneutics vs. empirical studies, and the problem of values, all themes very much central to current discussions in comparative literature and literary theory. Taken together they form a variegated picture of a discipline in a changing world, continually involved, so to speak, in ‘The Search for a New Alphabet.’

Let this book be a resource for your kids and a reading activity for the whole family! Organized from atrocious A to zany Z and decked out with illustrations that are bound to turn your tummy, The Yuckiest Alphabet Book in the World is the perfect balance of yuck and yay! Just look at the cover: draped in striped, brightly colored fur, this book boasts a “so-ugly-its-cute” aesthetic that would look good on any bookshelf or nursery. But it’s not what’s on the outside that counts...it’s what’s on the inside, which is why we’ve opted for sturdy board pages for this colorful kids' book. Book excerpt: Welcome to England's Ministry of Letters, the place where all the words in the world - in books, magazines, newspapers, road signs, posters, and more-start their lives, and from which the letters coordinate their critical missions to help children learn the alphabet. This book tells the story of Charlie Foxtrot, who starts school and finds mastering the alphabet confusing. The members of the Ministry's Special Alphabet Service set off on a mission to Scotland to help Charlie and to open his mind to the power of letters and words. The charming artwork, reminiscent of classic children's book illustrations from the 1950s and 1960s, combines with the witty text to bring the characters of the alphabet to life.

Book excerpt: Today more than ever literature and the other arts make use of urban structures – it is in the city that the global and universal joins the local and individual. Babylon or New Jerusalem? Perceptions of the City in Literature draws a map of the concept of the city in literature and represents the major issues involved. Contributions to the volume revisit cities such as the London of Wordsworth, Dorothy Richardson and Virginia Woolf or Rilke’s Paris, but also travel to the politics of power in Renaissance theatre at Ferrara and to deliberate urban erasures in post-apartheid South Africa. The texts represented range from Renaissance plays to contemporary novels and to poetry from various periods, with references to the visual arts, including film. The role of memory in contemplating the city and also specific urban metaphors developed in literature, such as boxing – the square ring – and jazz are also discussed. The transformation of cities by legislation on cemeteries, by lighting or by projects of urban renewal are the subject of articles, while others reflect on images of the city in worlds specifically forged by writers like William Blake and James Thomson. The contributors themselves live and work in many varied cities, thus representing a dynamic and real variety of critical approaches, and introducing a strong theoretical and comparative element.
