Book excerpt: In this insightful and inspirational memoir, Michael Ward returns to the early years of the AIDS epidemic, when so little was known and so few who were diagnosed survived. He chronicles in candid detail his partner Mark's decline and eventual death. By looking back on these devastating events, the author not only honors a generation lost to the illness but also opens a vital window onto the past, before medication helped save lives and when HIV/AIDS was usually a death sentence. About the Author Michael is a retired psychotherapist. He was instrumental in the development of The Shared Heart (William Morrow, 1997), which presents the portraits and coming-out stories of forty gay and lesbian teenagers. The Shared Heart won the American Library Association's Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Book Award in the nonfiction category in 1998. It was also on ALA's Best Books for Young Adults list in 1999. Happily married, Michael lives on Cape Cod with his husband, Moe, and cat, Jack. Visit Michael online at www.theseaisquiet.com.

Book excerpt: The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instru ment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory left as a legacy its Third Catalog of High Energy Gamma-Ray Sources, whose detections include a large number of blazars, some pulsars, the Large Magellanic Cloud and a solar flare. Most of the newly discovered objects - a majority of the catalog -are unidentified sources, with a clearly predominant Galactic population. Are all these radio-quiet pulsars, like Geminga, or is there a novel type of celestial object, awaiting identification? In spite of the limited angular resolution provided by EGRET and COMPTEL, there is still much to learn about unidentified ,-ray sources: correlation studies, multiwavelength observations and theoretical work can provide valuable clues, specially if these efforts are carried out in a coordinated manner. The aim of this workshop, held from October 9 to 11, 2000, at the Instituto N acional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica, at Tonantzintla, Mexico, was to gather experts on the subject, including observational as tronomers specialized in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, in an effort to address the question of the Nature of Galactic high-energy gamma-ray sources, both from the theoretical and observational perspec tive, and elaborate schemes for future identification studies which can make use of existing and forthcoming facilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joel Vernon Smith invites you to watch while life unfolds for entities we’ll never meet, in settings far from our day-to-day locales. Each character is someone we once loved. Or we wish we could have loved. Or perhaps we seek merely to understand her. A sensitive teen takes his dad’s memory for a ride in a new four-wheel-drive in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. A married couple shares a traumatic memory of a decaying barn. A passionate duo learns that their ship is doomed. A wealthy college student argues with his girlfriend when a draft notice arrives. A mentally-troubled elderly woman claims a friendship with a man of smoke. Frightful demons force a man to do a dark tunnel-dance in front of a stalled bus. The author of The Rapists bids you to explore the lives of mostly-gentle human beings as they deal with feelings of love or the arrival of unexpected horror. If it’s true (as a late-sixties song suggests) that words of love won’t win a girl’s heart anymore, perhaps the reader should open this book and take a journey to somewhere she’s never been before. The ride will be exciting.

Book excerpt: The true story of a luxury steamship lost in 1912, and its haunting curse, inspire a tale of fatal desire, theft and greed. Praise for Jewel Sea: 'Kelly conveys the rich history of the colourful pearling trade in north-western Australia with gusto and charm....The myth of the cursed jewel has recurred for centuries in storytelling, but Kelly may be the first to have this beautiful and powerful object speak for itself.' - Sydney Morning Herald 'The narrative is breathtaking and the characters are well drawn. I read this book in just two sittings, which is testament to my unwillingness to put the book down.' - Mrs B's Book Reviews 'a many layered, little gem of Australian historical fiction. I could feel, hear and smell the isolated, underpopulated coastal towns of the early 1900's and the cruise liner Koombana in which it is set.' - DM Cameron, acclaimed author of Beneath the Mother Tree. The whole of the harbour was touched with gold - the tops of the quiet waves, warehouse roofs, the bulging folds of sails at rest, the tips of seagull wings - giving him one sweeping glimpse of beauty just as he was leaving, a vision of things as they ought always to be just as they were not... March, 1912. A sultry Indian summer hangs over the west coast of Australia and aboard the luxury steamship SS Koombana, three tales entwine. Irene Everley longs to leave her first-class fishbowl existence, secretly penning a gossip column as her life spirals out of control into soulless liaisons and alcohol, the long shadow of a tragedy clouding her view. James Sinclair, an investor on his way to Broome is not the man he says he is but can he be trusted? Abraham Davis, a wealthy dealer whose scandalous divorce is being dragged through the press, prepares to take the gamble of his life: to purchase an infamous, stolen pearl along the journey north. Perfectly round, perfectly pink, this pearl comes with a curse and with a warning - destroying all who keep it from returning to the sea.

Book excerpt: Thelmas journal begins shortly after she asked her sisters to join her on an adventure around the world. While Marge agreed to accompany her, Ula declined for reasons unknown. Thelma and Marge left Akron, Ohio, in May 1935. The places theyd only read about were soon to become real-life adventures. The breathtaking views of the Grand Canyon and Mount Wilson were some of the riches they encountered on their way to the Dollar Steamship Lines in Los Angeles, where their cruise originated. Their first port of call was Honolulu. So taken by its beauty and tranquility, Thelma and Marge vowed to return. In Italy, they had a private audience with Pope Pius XI in Castel Gandolfo, his summer home outside Rome. Although Joyce wrote parts of this book, Thelmas diary is in her own words. Youll read about the events she witnessed and then wrote about each day, an uncensored depiction of two sisters out to explore and experience life. Joyces wish to preserve family history compelled her to share this memoir. It shows Joyces affection for the Dyke sisters and is a fitting tribute to their extraordinary lives.

Book excerpt: In 1935 a young Englishman living on Corfu wrote enthusiastically to a middle-aged Brooklynite who had just published a succes de scandale in Paris: ... Tropic [of Cancer] turns the corner into a new life which has regained its bowels." Henry Miller, realizing that in Lawrence Durrell he had hooked his ideal reader, responded: "You're the first Britisher who's written me an intelligent letter about the book." Thus began a correspondence that ended only with Miller's death in 1980 - nearly 1,000,000 words later. The Durrell-Miller Letters, 1935-80 contains an extensive and representative selection of the total correspondence. Almost half of the present volume has never been published before, including some recently recovered "lost" letters; in addition, many passages expurgated from letters published in 1963 have been restored. Editor Ian S. MacNiven of the State University of New York, Maritime College, is quite right to regard the Durrell-Miller correspondence as a dual biography of the creative lives of two of this century'sgreat literary iconoclasts, a biography "At once as serious as Schopenhauer and as winning as wine." Book excerpt: Over the course of a year, Jules Pretty walked along the shoreline of East Anglia in southeastern England, eventually exploring four hundred miles on foot (and another hundred miles by boat). It is a coast and a culture that is about to be lost—not yet, perhaps, but soon—to rising tides and industrial sprawl. This Luminous Coast takes the reader with him on his journey over land and water; over sea walls of dried grass, beside stretched fields of golden crops, alongside white sails gliding across the intricate lacework of invisible creeks and estuaries, under vast skies that are home to curlews and redshanks and the outpourings of skylarks. East Anglia's coastline is as much a human landscape as it is a natural one, and Pretty is equally perceptive about the region's cultural heritage and its "industrial wild": fishing villages and the modern seaside resorts, family farms and oil refineries, pleasure piers and concrete seawalls, cozy pubs and military installations. Through words and photographs, Pretty interweaves stories of the land and sea with people past and present. He is a passionate and sensitive guide to a region in transition, under stress, and perhaps even doomed, as finely attuned to its history as he is to its unique sensory world.

Book excerpt: 'He transforms the smallest everyday item, a winter coat or holiday gravy, into talismans of redemption and loss, with simple, unadorned language.' - Daren Wang, Paste Magazine 'Kelly remains one of the country's most important artists, a songsmith able to condense epics into perfect four-minute pop songs.' - Jane Cornwell, London Evening Standard 'His voice-sly and warm, laconic and sometimes frail-may be the closest thing we have to a national one.' - Robert Forster, The Monthly 'If I was only allowed to listen to one artist for the rest of my life I would choose Paul Kelly.' - Kasey Chambers Don't Start Me Talking comprises some of the finest poetry written in Australia. Paul Kelly's lyrics illuminate the way we live, sometimes with a haunting and savage intensity, sometimes with humour, always with a lightness and simplicity that belies the complexity of the world he is singing and writing into being. In addition to his lyrics, Kelly has written songs with and for many other artists, as well as his 2010 award-winning 'Mongrel Memoir', How To Make Gravy. The lyrics encompass his writing over two decades, from 1984 to 2012, and are grouped by album in chronological order. Also included are lyrics that have not been previously published.
