Book excerpt: Everyone knows that President George W. Bush is from Texas. But few of us know the role his home state plays in his presidency, and in our country. In this dual biography of man and state, Michael Lind confronts the chief crises of Bush's presidency--the economy, the Middle East, and religious fundamentalism--and traces their roots back to Texas, a state, Lind argues, that yields salient clues to the future course of our country.Widely praised as an iconoclastic and brilliant political observer, Lind, a fifth generation Texan, chronicles the ethnic clash that produced modern Texas, the well-known plundering of the state's natural resources at the hands of its elites, and finally the deep strain of "Old Testament religiosity" which, having originated in Texas, now reaches all over the globe in the form of Bush's foreign policy. In the tradition of Gary Wills's Reagan's America, Made in Texas provides a wholly original cultural history that should change the way we understand not just our president, but our country.

Book excerpt: Professor Nicholas claims to be a man of science, but that might change after he and his wife take their five adopted children (A.J., Adam, Rachel, Allison and Cinnamon) on a trip into outer-space. The space traveler’s journey takes them to two distant planets. One of the planets is yellow and the other one looks much like Earth. The five children and Mrs. Nicholas can’t explain it, but they feel strangely drawn to the yellow planet. To their amazement the yellow planet draws their ship the Star Clipper towards it. After landing on that yellow planet, the Professor, his wife and children are soon caught up in an adventure. Part of this adventure takes place on the yellow planet which they learn is named Willow Weath. The other part of their adventure leads them to the earth-like planet. It is known as Tellus. Both planets are involved in a crisis. Nomis, the Head Servant on Willow Weath, is the one who sends the visitors and three helpers (Brandon, Anissa and Ann) to Tellus. While the adventurers are there, they find out just how serious the situation is. During their time on Tellus the travelers out run the agents of the evil Queen Ragnus onboard the submarine Dawn Star. The Nicholas’ then return to Willow Weath where they and the three helpers set out on a quest. Along the way they learn how the Trio: Sum, Crio and The Rider on the Clouds are always with them. However, as the family proceeds down the trail a foul being known as Mr. Furis tries his best to convince them otherwise. While on Willow Weath the adventurers stay in a tree castle. They also travel through an enchanted forest, a quarrelsome village, a dreary desert, a dark terrifying valley, fight a fierce battle, and climb a lofty peak. Along the path, the earthlings meet many people and learn many lessons. Are they the fulfillment of The Prophecy of The Seven, will they be successful in delivering the Mourning Stone to its proper home?

All children of life, regardless of age, encounter beastly characters and thorny obstacles. Listening to the spiritual guide who whispered wisdom of the ages, Annalia learned lessons to break free from dark night and move into a brighter day. Do you know the role thoughts, emotions, and free will play in conquering life's demons? Annalia does. Are you able to translate universal signs that pop up giving direction along the way? Do you know how personal resources might be used to weed a beastly mess from life's plot? How they might uproot a dream? Annalia learned how by mastering divine magic. Can your spirit soar aligned with its Star Code even when gravity-worshippers attempt to weigh it down? Can you shine your HeartLight to illuminate the way out of a nightmare? Annalia can. This self-health novel provides life lessons taught by Lazy Lapis, the Dream Magician. Return with Annalia and her guide to The Forest of Perpetual Night that lies on the far edge of Tabankhu. Master life's craft and turn in an inspired performance daily. Learn to recognize horrible happenings-black holes, shifting landscapes, bottomless abysses, physical afflictions, sinkholes of despair and dead-end mazes- for what they are, life tests, nothing more or less. Refuse to wander through life as a Sleepy Noggin. When you show that you know what you know, you will be cast as a star in a living dream. If a young girl can star in life, you can, too. (A reader's guide is included as an appendix.)
