This book was released on 2023-01-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pause for a spell to visit with the remarkable inhabitants of Greenwood Cemetery. Greenwood Cemetery is resplendent in its gardenlike setting, gently rolling hills, sharply edged bluffs, impressively carved monuments and row after row of military gravestones. It is a social laboratory that helps those get to know who was here before and what their families wish future generations to remember about them. Visitors can find heroes and villains, mayors, bankers, industrialists, the well-to-do, and the forgotten. Some monuments are fascinating simply for their carved angels, others poignant in their descriptions of lives cut short. Indeed, all the markers have a story to tell. The most notable among them are included in this book. Stroll through Greenwood with Dr. Gary Joiner and learn a thing or two about those who rest here.
Book Synopsis Greek Epigram from the Hellenistic to the Early Byzantine Era by : Maria Kanellou
Download or read book Greek Epigram from the Hellenistic to the Early Byzantine Era written by Maria Kanellou and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek epigram is a remarkable poetic form. The briefest of all ancient Greek genres, it is also the most resilient: for almost a thousand years it attracted some of the finest Greek poetic talents as well as exerting a profound interest on Latin literature, and it continues to inspire and influence modern translations and imitations. After a long period of neglect, research on epigram has surged during recent decades, and this volume draws on the fruits of that renewed scholarly engagement. It is concerned not with the work of individual authors or anthologies, but with the evolution of particular subgenres over time, and provides a selection of in-depth treatments of key aspects of Greek literary epigram of the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Byzantine periods. Individual chapters offer insights into a variety of topics, from explorations of the dynamic interactions between poets and their predecessors and contemporaries, and of the relationship between epigram and its socio-political, cultural, and literary background from the third century BCE up until the sixth century CE, to its interaction with its origins, inscribed epigram more generally, other literary genres, the visual arts, and Latin poetry, as well as the process of editing and compilation which generated the collections which survived into the modern world. Through the medium of individual studies the volume as a whole seeks to offer a sense of this vibrant and dynamic poetic form and its world which will be of value to scholars and students of Greek epigram and classical literature more broadly.

Other manifestations of light were brought forth. Certain manifestations of the Great Light became servants, guardians, and witnesses to the unfolding events. It began when the Great Light initiated the twenty-fourth realm. Not all light was created in the same spectrum and not all possessed the honorable wings of legend. The beings of light marveled at the Great Light's numerous revelations. However, there was one who rose in his pride and broke all the laws that kept the balance. This is that one which came to be known as the Adversary
Book Synopsis Tombs of the Ancient Poets by : Nora Goldschmidt
Download or read book Tombs of the Ancient Poets written by Nora Goldschmidt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the ways in which the tombs of the ancient poets - real or imagined - act as crucial sites for the reception of Greek and Latin poetry. Drawing together a range of examples, the collection makes a distinctive contribution to the study of literary reception by focusing on the materiality of the body and the tomb, and the ways in which they mediate the relationship between classical poetry and its readers. From the tomb of the boy poet Quintus Sulpicius Maximus, which preserves his prize-winning poetry carved on the tombstone itself, to the modern votive offerings left at the so-called 'Tomb of Virgil'; from the doomed tomb-hunting of long-lost poets' graves, to the 'graveyard of the imagination' constructed in Hellenistic poetry collections, the essays collected here explore the position of ancient poets' tombs in the cultural imagination and demonstrate the rich variety of ways in which they exemplify an essential mode of the reception of ancient poetry, poised as they are between literary reception and material culture.

Download or read book The Gates of Dawn written by Robert Newcomb and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epic fantasy found an exhilarating new voice in Robert Newcomb, whose monumental debut novel, The Fifth Sorceress, was hailed by readers and critics alike. And now, for all those spellbound by the tale of Prince Tristan, heir to the throne of Eutracia, his twin sister Princess Shailiha, the ancient wizard Wigg, and the fate of their enchanted land, there is indeed more—much more—to be told. . . . For three centuries, Eutracia was a kingdom at peace, ruled by a benevolent monarchy and guided by a council of wizards. But a horror from the past, long believed vanquished, returned with devastating fury. And when the battle against the bloodthirsty Sorceresses of the Coven was finally won, victory was not without its price. Now, the royal palace lies in ruins; the king and queen, the royal guard, and the Directorate of Wizards are dead; the land is lawless; and Prince Tristan— forced by the Coven to murder his father, the King—is a wanted man. In a cavernous underground labyrinth, once headquarters of the wizards’ council, Tristan has taken refuge with his sister, Shailiha, her infant daughter, the wizard Wigg—the lone surviving member of the Directorate—and the crippled wizard Faegan, returned from self-imposed exile in the forest of Shadowood. Together they face the daunting task of restoring order to Eutracia and winning back the allegiance of her subjects. But suddenly, even these challenges pale beside a truly terrifying turn of events. The sacred jewel that is the source of all magic has inexplicably begun to lose its power. Without its age-old enchantment to sustain their spells, the immortal wizards will perish . . . and magic will vanish from Eutracia forever. At the same time, a mysterious and ruthless mercenary has declared a bounty upon the head of Prince Tristan. And an army of wizards on a mission to rid Eutracia of monsters created by the Coven has fallen prey to an insidious breed of creatures—beings that can only have sprung from forbidden use of malevolent magic. With time and their powers dwindling, Wigg and Faegan desperately seek to discover who, or what, has succeeded the dead Sorceresses in laying siege to Eutracia. But when the shocking truth is revealed, and an evil that transcends life itself is made known, it is Tristan, more than any other, who will be stunned to his very soul. And it is Tristan who will be thrust into the ultimate battle—for his life, his land, and the course of his destiny.
