Download or read book Preaching, Word and Sacrament written by Nigel Yates and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study follows on from Yate's standard work Buildings, Faith and Worship: the Liturgical Arrangement of Anglican Churches 1600-1900 (OUP 1991, revised edition 2000) and Liturgical Space in Western Europe since the Reformation (Ashgate, 2008) to provide the first detailed study of Scottish post-Reformation church interiors for fifty years. In the intervening period many of the buildings described by George Hay have been demolished, converted to non-ecclesiastical use or liturgically reordered. However, this study goes further to include many surviving examples not noted by Hay, and extends his work further into the nineteenth century, with a detailed study of buildings up to 1860, and with a more general consideration of later nineteenth and early twentieth century church architecture in Scotland. The detailed study of developments in Scotland, especially those in the Presbyterian churches, are set in the context of comparative developments in other parts of Britain and Europe, especially those in the Reformed churches of the Netherlands and Switzerland to create a groundbreaking new study by an established author.

Book Synopsis A Companion to the Book of Common Prayer by : Gerald Bray
Download or read book A Companion to the Book of Common Prayer written by Gerald Bray and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-01 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Common Prayer stands as one of the greatest achievements of the English Reformation. Although increasingly replaced by more modern forms, it remains the foundation of Anglican worship and a succinct expression of Anglican doctrine as received by its sixteenth and seventeenth-century authors. It is therefore a text to be treasured and used, both for its historical insight into the Church of England’s theological origins, and for its continued value as an enriching liturgical resource. In this Companion, Gerald Bray provides a practical guide to the 1662 text and its underlying doctrinal basis. Outlining its development from the first version of the prayer book in 1549, through the Elizabethan settlement and the upheaval of the civil war and protectorate, he shows that many of the liturgical controversies and debates we see today are nothing new. With the inclusion of a summary of the history of the text, and an extensive bibliography for further reading, A Companion to the Book of Common Prayer will unlock this seminal text for a fresh generation of worshippers.

Book Synopsis Eucharistic Sacramentality in an Ecumenical Context by : David J. Kennedy
Download or read book Eucharistic Sacramentality in an Ecumenical Context written by David J. Kennedy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the epiclesis or invocation of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharistic Prayer, using the Anglican tradition as an historical model of a communion of churches in conscious theological and liturgical dialogue with Christian antiquity. Incorporating major studies of England, North America and the Indian sub-Continent, the author includes an exposition of Inter-Church ecumenical dialogue and the historic divisions between western and eastern Eucharistic traditions and twentieth-century ecumenical endeavour. This unique study of the relationship between theology and liturgical text, commends a theology and spirituality which celebrates the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Eucharist as present and eschatological gift. It thus sets historic, contemporary and ecumenical divisions in a new theological context.
