Book Synopsis Reconstructions of Secondary Education by : John Gray
Download or read book Reconstructions of Secondary Education written by John Gray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British secondary education has changed in major ways since 1945. This book examines some consequences and implications of both change and stability, drawing on a unique series of national surveys of school leavers in Scotland. The authors provide an empirical and theoretical account of central problems of contemporary schooling. Their analysis covers: certification, curriculum and selection; the effects of educational expansion; trends in educational inequality; the impact of comprehensive reorganisation; truancy and alienation from schooling; the explanation of differences in performance between schools and the implications for the public accountability of schools. From these analyses the authors develop a critique of the ‘theory’ of the education system that underpinned expansion. They examine this theory’s logical and empirical status as ‘myth’ and elaborate how the political system and social science might jointly overcome some of the methodological difficulties that beset social and educational research.

Book Synopsis Policy, Belief and Practice in the Secondary English Classroom by : Bethan Marshall
Download or read book Policy, Belief and Practice in the Secondary English Classroom written by Bethan Marshall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of comparative classroom practice in the teaching of secondary English are limited, especially when it comes to exploration of the day-to-day practice of English teachers in the secondary classroom. This book presents a case study analysis of secondary classroom practice in three countries: Canada, England and Scotland. Each country has had different degrees of state involvement within the secondary English curriculum over the last twenty years. England has had the highest degree of state involvement in that it has had several statutory national curricula and a variety of assessment regimes. Scotland has had a non- statutory curriculum and no national tests and Canada has had no national curriculum at all, with education being determined at province level, and each province varying its policies. The research adopts a case study approach involving both classroom observation and interviews with teachers. Through this, the authors explore the impact of state involvement on the reality of what happens in secondary English classrooms. The book invites readers to consider the applicability of the findings to their own contexts, to examine their own practice in the light of this and to consider the nature of the relationships between policy, personal belief and practice in the teaching of English.

Book Synopsis The Teacher and the Needs of Society in Evolution by : Edmund J. King
Download or read book The Teacher and the Needs of Society in Evolution written by Edmund J. King and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Teacher and the Needs of Society in Evolution deals with the needs of the teacher in an evolving society. Emphasis is placed on the schools' changing context and perspectives, the evolving institutions and methods of education, and response in research and development. The chapters directly relate a rich fund of information and wide sensibility to current discussions undertaken by teachers and other educators everywhere. This volume consists of 12 chapters organized into three sections and begins with a discussion of the social context and the dynamics of change. It explores changing perspectives in the educational process, the direction schools are already, and the cultivation of skill and the best use of human ability. Inequalities in educational opportunity in Britain today, and the ways in which they may be reduced, are also considered. The next section focuses on the changing role of teachers, their preparation and orientation, the use of new media in education, and future prospects. The role of teachers in research or curricular development is highlighted. The final section examines the evolution in educational thinking, with emphasis on the problem of authority and responsibility in the teaching of the new humanities, the rise in school enrollments, and the hunger for learning. This book is intended for educators who want to improve their teaching skills for the benefit of society.
