Book excerpt: 'Dan Rhodes is a true original' – Hilary Mantel When the sleepy English village of Green Bottom hosts its first literary festival, the good, the bad and the ugly of the book world descend upon its leafy lanes. But the villagers are not prepared for the peculiar habits, petty rivalries and unspeakable desires of the authors. And they are certainly not equipped to deal with Wilberforce Selfram, the ghoul-faced, ageing enfant terrible who wreaks havoc wherever he goes. Sour Grapes is a hilarious satire on the literary world which takes no prisoners as it skewers authors, agents, publishers and reviewers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: At Glasgow s University Library I discovered a book about Scotland on film, Scotch Reels. Originally, Scotch Reels is the title of a research carried out in 1982 about the depiction of Scotland on screen. It was revealed then that the predominant image of Scotland was very much engaged with stereotypes (defined as the heather and haggis image by one of the book s critics) and had obviously nothing to do with the contemporary reality of Scotland. Not surprisingly, that radical view has found a lot of stern critics. On superficial examination, when I think of all the recent films set in Scotland (ranging from the historical epos Braveheart to the contemporary fast-paced drug story Trainspotting, to mention two of the more popular examples), it seems to me that contemporary films set in Scotland show a wider spectrum of Scottish life than they apparently did before the 1980s, when the stories were mostly (with a few exceptions only) set in the Highlands or on an island, in a community far away from contemporary (modern and industrial) life. As a classic example of those films one can mention the musical Brigadoon by Vicente Minnelli from the year 1954. However, in my thesis I want to concentrate on films set in the City of Glasgow, since there would be far too much material concerned if I considered every single available recent film set in Scotland. I would like to find out whether the image of Glasgow has improved (or widened in its conception) through the release of recent films, compared to its depiction in older movies. As I could not analyse all recent feature films set in Glasgow in this context, I decided to concentrate on a few examples. By taking a closer look at these films I hope to be able to demonstrate how varied (or one-sided as will be determined) the contemporary portrayal of the city is. I do not want to omit mentioning my awareness of the fact that my selection is very subjective. Had I selected other movies, the result would naturally have been a different one. Also, I have not taken into account television films or series set in the Glasgow area. Especially in recent years a whole range of series has been produced and broadcasted, for instance the surreal hospital-drama Psychos, starring Douglas Henshall, the controversial Tinsel Town, set in Glasgow s lively clubbing scene, or Glasgow Kiss, which portrays the city as a modern, airy place, inhabited by sympathetic, educated middle-class people [...]

Book excerpt: With its unparalleled coverage of English slang of all types (from 18th-century cant to contemporary gay slang), and its uncluttered editorial apparatus, Cassell's Dictionary of Slang was warmly received when its first edition appeared in 1998. 'Brilliant.' said Mark Lawson on BBC2's The Late Review; 'This is a terrific piece of work - learned, entertaining, funny, stimulating' said Jonathan Meades in The Evening Standard. But now the world's best single-volume dictionary of English slang is about to get even better. Jonathon Green has spent the last seven years on a vast project: to research in depth the English slang vocabulary and to hunt down and record written instances of the use of as many slang words as possible. This has entailed trawling through more than 4000 books - plus song lyrics, TV and movie scripts, and many newspapers and magazines - for relevant material. The research has thrown up some fascinating results

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man in the Seventh Row tells the deeply affecting story of Roy Batty, a film fan who loves the cinema just a little too much. No matter the movie - The Graduate, Brief Encounter, The Magnificent Seven - Roy finds himself sucked from his seventh-row seat into the heart of the action on the big screen. His life has spiralled into The Purple Rose of Cairo in reverse. A fantasy come true -- or a living nightmare? "A strange and beguiling novel about films and those who love and live them" - Ian Rankin What they're saying... "A most unusual novel, proving emphatically that life is possible both inside and outside the cinema! It's a very nice lend of the real, the fictional and the dream world and I really don't think I've read anything quite like it before." - Barry Norman "...hugely enjoyable. Pacy, sharp and witty - in the proper sense - it is a novel that baby boomers and film buffs will strongly relate to, and all enthusiasts of unusual - of original - fiction will take great pleasure in." - Andrew Marr "Pendreigh's infectious love of cinema and brilliant wordcraft combine to make for a singularly enthralling tale of one man's journey through the hardships of life." - Literally Jen "... a wholly likeable read ... Pendreigh's novel is a pleasing dissection of man's all-too-modern need for escape in darkened auditoriums that posits him somewhere between David Thomson's Suspects and Guy Bellamy's The Secret Lemonade Drinker." - Paul Dale, The List "I loved it... a terrific read, definitely one for fans of film." - Janice Forsyth, Movie Cafe, Radio Scotland From the author... "The book is sub-titled The Movie Lover's Novel with good reason, as it certainly celebrates a love of the movies. You'll doubtless be familiar with many of the classic movies featured but it might also introduce you to one or two less familiar films. "Ultimately, The Man in the Seventh Row it is about childhood and adulthood, about obsession and love, and about loss and the possibility of redemption. "Set in Scotland and California, the book addresses questions we all have: where did we come from, where are we going, how long do we have?"
