In the American portion of the Directory, names which are followed by an(?) have not replied to the blanks sent them for at least two years, and all such will be dropped from the next edition of the work, unless heard from in the meantime. Names which are not followed by an() or an(?) are, without doubt, correct, but have failed to reply to the last blanks sent to their address. For convenience, an index has been placed in the front of the book, and the list of abbreviations will be found immediately following.
