You ask me for the latest news concerning the work In which you were so interested. You ask whether I have succeeded in correlating the various aspects of the problem in one homogeneous system of linguistic pedagogy. My answer takes the form of the present book. I have been able to recon struct the body of it from memory, and to augment the original documents by a large quantity of new material, and have finally ventured to submit it as my contribution to the ditcrature of linguistic pedagogy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Mankind has long passed from the stage in which speech is used for the mere expression of physical facts and desires, to that in which language is employed as the highest tool within the grasp to paint the pictures of poetic imagination, and sway a world-wide audience to noble thoughts and deeds. Not only to satisfy the necessities of travellers in far countries has the study of language been ever desirable, but to penetrate the spirit and genius of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, Dante, it has become, to the cultured of every country, a necessity for the full gift of a liberal education. Since language became literature, the necessity for the mastery over other tongues than his own has forced the attention of student and of professor to the problem of the study of languages; and the great intellectual value of a complete and logical system for the mastery of tongues, if such could be found, is so apparent, that the greatest honour has always been awarded to discoverers in this region, which is still felt, however, to be to a large extent unexplored, or at least unconquered. The world has this year seen a magnificent celebration of the grand services to the cause of education rendered by Comenius. In spite of this we are still far from having definitely adopted in our school and college practice the now acknowledged principles perceived by Comenius - that education must be organic and not mechanical, that language teaching, modern and classic, should proceed by dealing with things and not with words and grammatical abstractions, and that before all else education should have direct bearing upon actual life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Study of Languages: A Guide for Teachers and Learners My examples are taken from a variety of languages, partly to avoid one-sidedness of treatment, partly to interest as many different classes of readers as possible. In discussing methods, I have drawn my illustrations from those books which I know best. The time has not yet come for an historical survey and critical estimate of the vast and increasing literature of linguistic pedagogy, either of that portion of it which deals with generalities and criticisms of methods, or that still larger portion which carries out - or pro fesses to carry out - these general principles in practical text books - reading-books, grammars, text-editions, methods, ' etc. In giving warning examples of mistakes into which learners may fall, I have confined myself to those made by foreigners in speaking and writing English, for the simple reason that the mistakes made by English-speakers in the use of other languages, though in themselves equally instructive and amusing, would have no point for the majority of my readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Languages: Brought Back to Its True Principles; Or the Art of in a Foreign Language The highest ability in the various departments Of the language is insisted upon. Perfection, it is true, is unattainable; but the purport Of a method, as the duty Of an instructor, is to keep it always in perspective before young people, and to lead them toward it, as far as circumstances permit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Languages The question of methods has doubtless occupied the attention of teachers as long as language teaching has existed. There was a time, however, when there was no dispute regarding those questions which are to-day most generally discussed; when each language teacher, apart from the slight peculiarities of his own individuality, pursued the same course. In this place we are interested merely in foreign-language teaching; and in our discussion we must begin at a point before civilized people, in the accepted meaning of the word, inhabited North America. There was at that time in the Old World but one foreign language in the schools: Latin. It was not until later that Greek was added; it was not until after the destruction of Constantinople by the Turks (1453) that highly educated Greeks fled toward the West, taking with them their language and the remains of their art. Latin became thereafter the common language of the educated, of the learned. Whoever would rise to higher refinement, whoever would enjoy the beauties of the classics, was obliged to learn the ancient languages, - there was no other possibility. And the purpose of such study indicated at once and in a perfectly natural manner the way to be followed - and the means of making the start in this way. Students wished to understand the classics. Without further ado they took up the various authors and began to decipher them, gradually becoming at home in the language. In the Latin schools Cicero was put into the hands of the beginners. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Teaching of Modern Languages in Theory and Practice The Teachers' Training Syndicate. The second appears in a slightly altered form. As delivered it consisted largely of oral illustrations and comments, only a portion of which is now printed, while some parts have been expanded. There seems to be at last a disposition to regard seriously the pretensions of Modern Languages to a larger. Place in Education, and I am not therefore without hope that the First Lecture, if only by the criticism which it evokes, may in some way serve to promote their claim, and especially their claim as Literature, to a fair hearing. Teachers generally find details concerning the practice of other teachers interesting, but I can not flatter myself that any one else will read the Second Lecture to the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Living Languages Englishmen especially, are at this moment employed by thou sands, as Merchants, Missionaries, Magistrates, &c., in learning hundreds of different languages spoken by people 111 all stages of civilization, from the lowest state of society upwards, and m their speedy acquisition of a correct knowledge and free colloquial use of several tongues of those tribes, hundreds of millions of the human race are most deeply interested, as that upon which mainly de pends both their temporal and eternal interests. Yet I am not aware that there is in existence a single work in which this sub jcet is closely and systematically investigated. It must be ob served that the point before us is, what 15 the best mode of acquir ing a knowledge of the language of savage and semi-civilized na tions? And that this is in some important respects quite distinct from both the acquisition _of dead languages andi'also of the living languages of nations who have been fully civilized and, conse quently, have a complete system of literature, a great variety of books of instruction written by extensively informed Natives, and also thoroughly educated teachers. There are difficulties in learning the languages of semi-civiliz ed and barbarous people which (do not exist in the case of the languages of civilized nations, and with respect to, the dead lau guages the principal points to be attended to and the objects aimed at are so entirely different from those in living languages, that what is applicable to the one is almost entirely inapplicable to the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages: In School and University The Modern Educator's Library has been designed to give considered expositions of the best theory and practice in English education of to-day. It is planned to cover the principal problems of educational theory in general, of curriculum and organisation, of some unexhausted aspects of the history of education, and of special branches of applied education. The Editor and his colleagues have had in view the needs of young teachers and of those training to be teachers, but since the school and the schoolmaster are not the sole factors in the educative process, it is hoped that educators in general (and which of us is not in some sense or other an educator?) as well as the professional schoolmaster may find in the series some help in understanding precept and practice in education of to-day and to-morrow. For we have borne in mind not only what is but what ought to be. To exhibit the educator's work as a vocation requiring the best possible preparation is the spirit in which these volumes have been written. No artificial uniformity has been sought or imposed, and while the Editor is responsible for the series in general, the responsibility for the opinions expressed in each volume rests solely with its author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Modern Foreign Languages and the Training of Teachers The lectures were originally intended to form an Intro duction to some criticism lessons of modern language lessons given by the students of the Training College, and the principles set forth in the lectures were at once practically applied in the detailed criticism of the lessons heard. The lectures were intended to be above all suggestive and stimu lating, but no attempt could be made to discuss in full the views either of the old school of language teachers and examiners who are hostile to any reform or of some modern extremists. A few slight alterations were introduced and some references to recent literature on the subject added when the lectures were revised for the Press, but, apart from these exceptions, they are substantially printed as they were first written in the Christmas Vacation of 1894.
