Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Teaching and Studying Languages Mankind has long passed from the stage in which speech is used for the mere expression of physical facts and desires, to that in which language is employed as the highest tool within the grasp to paint the pictures of poetic imagination, and sway a world-wide audience to noble thoughts and deeds. Not only to satisfy the necessities of travellers in far countries has the study of language been ever desirable, but to penetrate the spirit and genius of Homer, Virgil, Shakespeare, Goethe, Hugo, Dante, it has become, to the cultured of every country, a necessity for the full gift of a liberal education. Since language became literature, the necessity for the mastery over other tongues than his own has forced the attention of student and of professor to the problem of the study of languages; and the great intellectual value of a complete and logical system for the mastery of tongues, if such could be found, is so apparent, that the greatest honour has always been awarded to discoverers in this region, which is still felt, however, to be to a large extent unexplored, or at least unconquered. The world has this year seen a magnificent celebration of the grand services to the cause of education rendered by Comenius. In spite of this we are still far from having definitely adopted in our school and college practice the now acknowledged principles perceived by Comenius - that education must be organic and not mechanical, that language teaching, modern and classic, should proceed by dealing with things and not with words and grammatical abstractions, and that before all else education should have direct bearing upon actual life. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ...our two facts are of the same nature. From this it results that they are comparable together, so that, in a given case, the one may logically serve as symbol for the other. By the light of this theory upon abstract ideas it is easy to determine the essential elements of every metaphorical expression. Let us analyse, for instance, the locution, "to uproot an error." We find therein--1. An abstract idea represented by the word "error." 2. A symbol unexpressed (that of a "weed"), but clearly indicated by the verb " to uproot." 3. A secret comparison between the abstract idea and the symbol. 4. The tacit identification of the idea with the symbol. Such a simple conclusion at the end of an almost laborious investigation may perhaps recall to the reader the mona parturiens of the fable. But this disproportion between the end and the means is inherent in the solution of every psychological problem. In the intellectual field the slightest fact cannot be thoroughly established without relatively considerable developments. 2. Ordinary symbolism--Construction of the metaphorical themes. The principle which we need to set in order the material of the figurative language should, and in fact does, spring from the preceding study or analysis. This principle may be formulated thus: --"The abstract ideas of mankind are not embodied in forms proper to themselves; they are manifested by the means of symbols taken from the external world, and therefore borrow their expression from the objective language." From this principle it is easy to deduce the process to be followed for distributing in natural groups the general material of the figurative language. First, the list of the abstract ideas of mankind will be...

You ask me for the latest news concerning the work In which you were so interested. You ask whether I have succeeded in correlating the various aspects of the problem in one homogeneous system of linguistic pedagogy. My answer takes the form of the present book. I have been able to recon struct the body of it from memory, and to augment the original documents by a large quantity of new material, and have finally ventured to submit it as my contribution to the ditcrature of linguistic pedagogy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Language Teaching, Vol. 3 With the learning oi languages it must be the other way. The aural way of entry is far more graphic and effective than that of learning out of books: in the one the personal element is stronger, in the other the scholarly treatment is supreme the one is the commerce of the market, the other the practice of the student and the Don. The present teaching of classics is as though no man ever spoke them; indeed, this really is, in a sense, true. I doubt whether one schoolboy in a hundred knows that there were two 'latins'-the book form in classical manner of Cicero, and the popular form of Terence - the one the language of the law courts, and the other the common talk of the street. I don't think that any English boy believes that Latin was spoken as we English talk to one another. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Study of Languages: A Guide for Teachers and Learners My examples are taken from a variety of languages, partly to avoid one-sidedness of treatment, partly to interest as many different classes of readers as possible. In discussing methods, I have drawn my illustrations from those books which I know best. The time has not yet come for an historical survey and critical estimate of the vast and increasing literature of linguistic pedagogy, either of that portion of it which deals with generalities and criticisms of methods, or that still larger portion which carries out - or pro fesses to carry out - these general principles in practical text books - reading-books, grammars, text-editions, methods, ' etc. In giving warning examples of mistakes into which learners may fall, I have confined myself to those made by foreigners in speaking and writing English, for the simple reason that the mistakes made by English-speakers in the use of other languages, though in themselves equally instructive and amusing, would have no point for the majority of my readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Foreign Languages: Principles and Methods The main object of this work is to supply a clear statement, illustrated by examples from experience, of the principles that underlie the teaching of a living foreign language, for they alone can supply the necessary standards by which to measure the relative value of the various methods it is possible to adopt. It is hoped that the book may also prove useful to the student of methods by giving him starting points for further research. To this end several of the problems that need investigation have been indicated. Among the most pressing may here be mentioned: (1) the best method of teaching foreign literature, (2) and composition; (3) the teaching of pronunciation in detail; (4) the application of the oral method to the teaching of grammar and vocabulary. Each of these subjects supplies in itself matter for an important monograph. An account of a tentative beginning in the experimental method applied to the teaching of foreign languages has been given in the form of an Addendum.
