Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 15 It was the impossibility of separating the duties of particular departments 'oi the service and describing them apart that first constrained me to take up the subject as a whole. I started out to describe particular branches of the serv ice, but quickly found that their connection with the others was so close as to render a de scription of the whole necessary. Thus I was led reluctantly and contrary to my original in tention to take up the subject in its entirety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 7 The accompanying volume represents the practical experience and research of the author and those about him, for a period of nearly half a century. In his work he has not sought to create something that was his own so much as he has to develop something of value to railroads and, incidentally, to the commerce of the world. While he has given the subject his best thought all his life, he has at the same time sought to supplement his knowledge and at best limited experience, with that of others. In this he has been, owing to the kindness of those about him and those generally connected with railroads, more fortunate than could have been expected. It is on these grounds that he has written the book and now ventures to offer it to the public. The first of the two books that make up this volume explains briefly the principles that surround the buying and handling of railway supplies. The subject is one of supreme importance to railroad corporations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 2 Few men have the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the minutiae of railway affairs in all their phases. This renders books of reference both necessary and valuable. The employer, the employe and the community are alike benefited by them. It was this thought that suggested the accompanying volumes. They treat of specific things, but do not reflect the methods of any particular property or organization. Polybius, in describing the Roman constitution, says if the reader finds the matter in his work to be trustworthy, he must assume the omissions to be intentional and unimportant. I cannot say this of the accompanying volumes. To treat exhaustively the science of railroads would fill a library. I do not attempt anything so elaborate, but seek only to point out essential principles and practices. On almost every railroad we find manuals in a more or less advanced state, but nowhere an attempt to explain the principles which govern as well as the rules and regulations which are to be observed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Railways, Vol. 3 of 12: Operation of Trains Of the facilities of the ancients for trans porting travelers historians tell us very little. Even Herodotus, that most voluble, curious and amiable of gossips, is silent. He describes his journeys, the people he visited and heard about, but says nothing as to how he traveled from place to place. And this notwithstanding his voyages necessitated the most varied transporta tion; that peculiar to sea and river, desert and highway, mountain and valley. He tells us, with a relish that time can never dull, of the habits of the people he saw and heard about; their idiosyncracies, foibles and weaknesses - especially their weaknesses - but not a word about his means Of transportation. Out of the necessities of their lives many of the devices in use today originated. The greatest, however, it is probable, is our alphabet. The cuneiform and pictorial writings used by surrounding nations, while answering the purposes of monumental writing or a re stricted business, were not adequate to the ex tended commerce of the tnicians. They re quired some simple and expeditious means of writing up their accounts and of communicating easily with persons at a distance; a method at once cheap, simple, easily learned and capable of particularizing the wants of trade. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Railways, the Trusts, and the People, Vol. 1 Some years ago Dr. Taylor said he thought that Equity Series should have a book on the railway question. I replied that there was room for a book that would deal with the political, industrial and social effects of different systems of railway control. Poor and the Interstate Commission had given us statistics; Wellington and other writers had discussed the construction and operation of railways from the engineering and economic side; Hadley had written a masterly treatise dealing with railway rates and management from the railway standpoint; and Hudson, Larrabee, Lewis, Cowles, etc., had written on the same topic from the people's point of view; but no one had brought together the facts that would show the broad effects of public and private railways and various methods of management upon moral and intellectual development, political, industrial and social conditions, and the progress of civilization. The Doctor approved the plan and this book is the result. Materials for its preparation were gathered in the course of many thousands of miles of travel covering three-fourths of the United States and most of the principal countries of Europe. Libraries were consulted in every country visited, and railway ministers and managers and leading authorities almost without exception afforded every assistance in their power. Leading railroad officials of twenty countries besides our own have been consulted and have given freely of their wealth of knowledge. Besides the Secretary and members of the English Board of Trade & Railway Commission, the Ministers of railways in France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany and Belgium, and the President of the Danish Government railways, the writer has talked with many railroad managers and others high in the service in all these countries, and also with leading officials of the railroads of Norway, Sweden, Holland, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. The privilege of directly questioning men who have all the facts at their fingers' ends and vocal termini, is of inestimable value in research of this sort, and the writer wishes to render hearty thanks to all who have so cordially assisted him. Among these arc many not directly connected with railway service but familiar with the economic, political or social aspects of the problem.
