Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Scientific Management AN element of risk attaches to any effort to appraise a movement while that movement is still in its earlier and more enthusiastic stages, especially when the appraisal is made by one who is (however modestly) a participant in it. The attempt is justified only by the accuracy with which facts are presented and by the justice and fairness of the inferences and conclusions drawn. In this book I have tried to give only facts which can be verified and to make infer emees with all due conservatism. The result is Offered for what it may be worth. There is some consolation in the thought that a later genera tion may count it an original, or at least con temporary, source. Book excerpt: "Lab Dynamics is a book about the challenges to doing science and dealing with the individuals involved, including oneself. The authors, a scientist and a psychotherapist, draw on principles of group and behavioral psychology but speak to scientists in their own language about their own experiences. They offer in-depth, practical advice, real-life examples, and exercises tailored to scientific and technical workplaces on topics as diverse as conflict resolution, negotiation, dealing with supervision, working with competing peers, and making the transition from academia to industry." "This is a uniquely valuable contribution to the scientific literature, on a subject of direct importance to lab heads, postdocs, and students. It is also required reading for senior staff concerned about improving efficiency and effectiveness in academic and industrial research."--BOOK JACKET

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Works Management Works management may be rightly termed the fiy-wheel of the industrial engine, to ensure some regularity to a very irregular set of move ments, and the nearer to an ideal movement such management can regulate it, the better its functional success: or works management makes possible the best of probabilities. There is no question as to the need for a work of this character - being a sort of bridge to Span the gap between theory and practice. Our schools and colleges supply the first and our workshops the second; but the connecting link is management - ou which rests the success of the ultimate result. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Implementation of Management Science in Marketing Marketing, as a management decision area, has been a substantial laggard in the application of management science. While production and finance grew to maturity in terms of management science approaches to problem solving during the 1950's and early l96o's, marketing only now seems on the verge of very rapid and significant development. In fact, marketing might well be described as a new frontier for the application of management science. Many problems remain to be structured and there is considerable need for creative new technical approaches. Many examples of these needs have been introduced in the preceding chapters of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Readings in Management This set of readings is designed to supplement standard texts in funda mentals of administrative or industrial management. Although the selec tions are arranged to be assigned concurrently with s'uch texts, they might well provide the basis for a variable-credit course dealing with specific management topics, such as human relations or organization theory. The articles could also be used to supplement a case course; for example, prob lems in administration policy and practice. Moreover, these readings should prove to be a stimulant and provide controversy for members of executive development programs. The purpose Of this readings text is twofold. First, a real understanding of management ultimately requires a professional or artistic orientation. Thus, contemporary textbooks emphasize such aspects of the subject, even at the expense of examining causal explanations and presenting the logic employed in developing specific techniques and concepts. Because of the changing nature of utilitarian Skills and techniques, progress in the field of management rests upon an understanding of its basic foundation. To further this Objective, many of the selections are drawn from disciplines which might be termed the mother sciences of management. Book excerpt: The Principles of Scientific Management Frederick Winslow Taylor The cheapening of any article in common use almost immediately results in a largely increased demand for that article. Take the case of shoes, for instance. The introduction of machinery for doing every element of the work which was formerly done by hand has resulted in making shoes at a fraction of their former labor cost, and in selling them so cheap that now almost every man, woman, and child in the working-classes buys one or two pairs of shoes per year, and wears shoes all the time, whereas formerly each workman bought perhaps one pair of shoes every five years, and went barefoot most of the time, wearing shoes only as a luxury or as a matter of the sternest necessity. In spite of the enormously increased output of shoes per workman, which has come with shoe machinery, the demand for shoes has so increased that there are relatively more men working in the shoe industry now than ever before.
