Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Human Behavior: Biological and Psychological Foundations The study of human phenomena must be carried on largely through the psychological and social sciences. Much of the writing in these sciences still consists of vague generalizations which have not been subjected to the test of being applied to a large number of data. What is needed above all is to carry much further the painstaking labor of accumulating a large mass of facts from which generalizations can be safely deduced. In other words, these sciences must get down to concrete realities more than they have in the past if they are to develop on a stable basis. It is the function of every science, on the one hand, to reduce as far as possible the phenomena with which it deals to the terms of the science upon which it is based, and, on the other hand, to describe the peculiar characteristics of these phenomena which distinguish them from the phenomena out of which they have evolved and which make them a fit subject for treatment by a distinct science. Thus psychical and social phenomena should be reduced as far as possible to biological terms, just as vital phenomena should be reduced as far as possible to chemical and physical terms. On the other hand, the peculiar characteristics of psychical and social phenomena should be described, just as the peculiar characteristics of vital phenomena should be described. It is a subdivision of behavioral neuroscience that studies the neural mechanisms of perception and behavior through direct manipulation of the brains of nonhuman animal subjects in controlled experiments. Biopsychology studies many topics relating to the body's response to a behavior or activity in an organism. It concerns the brain cells, structures, components, and chemical interactions that are involved in order to produce actions. Psychologists in this.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson provides a thorough, engaging introduction to the underlying principles of biological psychology in 16 manageable chapters. Going beyond the typical boundaries, Wilson includes cutting-edge research from molecular biology, neuroscience, psychobiology, and neuropsychology to give the reader a more complete--yet accessible--understanding of the biological bases of human behavior. Wilson also offers a special focus on human behavior and physiology. This focus makes the text unique in the market, as most of the competing books emphasize animal models and include only limited human examples. This new text features an outstanding art program, carefully developed to clarify core concepts. Readers will find that each of Wilson's 16 chapters offers current research findings, an excellent use of everyday examples to make difficult concepts understandable, and pedagogy crafted to help students master the material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychology classic—a detailed study of scientific theories of human nature and the possible ways in which human behavior can be predicted and controlled—from one of the most influential behaviorists of the twentieth century and the author of Walden Two. “This is an important book, exceptionally well written, and logically consistent with the basic premise of the unitary nature of science. Many students of society and culture would take violent issue with most of the things that Skinner has to say, but even those who disagree most will find this a stimulating book.” —Samuel M. Strong, The American Journal of Sociology “This is a remarkable book—remarkable in that it presents a strong, consistent, and all but exhaustive case for a natural science of human behavior…It ought to be…valuable for those whose preferences lie with, as well as those whose preferences stand against, a behavioristic approach to human activity.” —Harry Prosch, Ethics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolutionary psychology is concerned with the adaptive problems early humans faced in ancestral human environments, the nature of the psychological mechanisms natural selection shaped to deal with those ancient problems, and the ability of the resulting evolved psychological mechanisms to deal with the problems people face in the modern world. Evolutionary psychology is currently advancing our understanding of altruism, moral behavior, family violence, sexual aggression, warfare, aesthetics, the nature of language, and gender differences in mate choice and perception. It is helping us understand the relationships between cognitive science, developmental psychology, behavior genetics, personality, and social psychology. Foundations of Evolutionary Psychology provides an up-to-date review of the ideas, issues, and applications of contemporary evolutionary psychology. It is suitable for senior undergraduates, first year graduate students, or professionals who wish to become conversant with the major issues currently shaping the emergence of this dynamic new field. It will be interesting to psychologists, anthropologists, sociologists, economists, philosophers, cognitive scientists, and anyone interested in using new developments in the theory of evolution to gain new insights into human behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foundations of Behavior Genetics provides a forward-looking introduction to this fascinating field. Written by an experienced teacher and researcher, this text focuses on concepts, methods, and findings that inform our understanding of heredity–behavior relations. The book's neuroscience perspective asks students to think about potential neural mechanisms involved in pathways from genes to behavior. While the text is primarily focused on human behavior genetics, it also emphasizes the importance of non-human animal models in experimental studies, as well as their evolutionary connections to humans. Part I covers the history of behavior genetics and the basics of non-molecular genetics; Part II discusses molecular genetics and neurogenetics; Part III addresses various behavioral disorders; and Part IV explores health, social behavior, and ethical implications. The text includes detailed chapter summaries, several “Check-up” questions after major sections that test student understanding, and recommended readings. Instructors are provided with a test bank of multiple-choice items and hi-res JPEGs of the many illustrations created for the book.
