Book excerpt: A spellbinding, beautifully written novel that moves between contemporary times and one of the most fascinating and disturbing periods in American history - the Salem witch trials. Harvard graduate student Connie Goodwin needs to spend her summer doing research for her doctoral dissertation. But when her mother asks her to handle the sale of Connie's grandmother's abandoned home near Salem, she can't refuse. As she is drawn deeper into the mysteries of the family house, Connie discovers an ancient key within a seventeenth-century Bible. The key contains a yellowing fragment of parchment with a name written upon it: Deliverance Dane. This discovery launches Connie on a quest-to find out who this woman was and to unearth a rare artifact of singular power: a physick book, its pages a secret repository for lost knowledge. As the pieces of Deliverance's harrowing story begin to fall into place, Connie is haunted by visions of the long-ago witch trials, and she begins to fear that she is more tied to Salem's dark past then she could have ever imagined. Written with astonishing conviction and grace, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane travels seamlessly between the witch trials of the 1690s and a modern woman's story of mystery, intrigue, and revelation.

Book Synopsis Special Deliverance by : Clifford D. Simak
Download or read book Special Deliverance written by Clifford D. Simak and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a Nebula and Hugo award winner, “one the best-loved authors in SF”: A tale of humans and one robot navigating an alien puzzle-world (Publishers Weekly). Following a conversation with a talking slot machine, Professor Edward Lansing finds himself mysteriously transported to a tavern on a long and empty road. It is immediately obvious to the educator that he is no longer on campus—or even Earth—and that he is not alone. Lansing’s new companions—a female engineer, a military officer, a humorless priest, a poetess, and a robot named Jurgens—all hail from separate alternate realities and share Lansing’s confusion. What is clear, however, is that they must continue down the road together, encountering a series of bizarre sights, dangerous obstacles, and perplexing puzzles along the way: an abandoned, decaying city; a set of doorways; a large blue cube; a tower that sings. Soon it is apparent they are all being tested for some eerie, inexplicable reason, and the choices each must make will determine his or her future. For those who fail, the alien trail will never be seen again. A provocative science fiction allegory, Special Deliverance is Hugo and Nebula Award–winner Clifford D. Simak’s Pilgrim’s Progress—a tale of great trials and hidden agendas that expose the foibles of humanity and a fantastic exploration of the human condition. A science fiction classic brimming with intelligence, invention, and wonder, it is yet another extraordinary creation from one of the genre’s most revered grandmasters.

Book Synopsis Deliverance From The Sin of Gluttony by : Zacharias Tanee Fomum
Download or read book Deliverance From The Sin of Gluttony written by Zacharias Tanee Fomum and published by ZTF Books Online. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, Deliverance from the Sin of Gluttony is the seventh book in the series “Practical Helps for Overcomers”. The books in the series which are already written are • Book ONE: Deliverance from Sin • Book TWO: The Way of Sanctification • Book THREE: Consecrated and Sanctified for Spiritual Ministry • Book FOUR: The Seed, the Sower and the Hearts of Men • Book FIVE: Deliverance from the Sin of Adultery and Fornication. • Book SIX: You Can Receive a Pure Heart Today. • Book SEVEN: Deliverance From the Sin of Gluttony. The sin of gluttony is a serious matter. Due to a lack of teaching, other sins linked to the appetites such as the appetite for sex and alcohol are vigorously condemned when they are abused or when one indulges in them out of God’s will. However, the sin of gluttony which is uncontrolled indulgence in food is hardly ever mentioned. This is very unfortunate. We clearly affirm that the person who commits adultery once and the one who commits gluttony once are both walking in the flesh and are both condemned before God. If there is no place in the kingdom of God for the adulterer or the fornication who continues in his sin, it is certain that there will be no place in the kingdom of God for the glutton who continues in his sin of gluttony. That being the case, deliverance from the sin of gluttony becomes imperative. In this book we are not laying down rules for eating. Neither are we giving practical methods for reducing weight. We have rather shown the way that leads to the deliverer, the Holy Spirit, for He alone delivers the captives. May the Lord help you as you read, to enter into freedom from the worship of food, so that you may become a worshipper of the living God. This is imperative because no glutton can truly worship the living God. He can only be worshipped by people with pure hearts and who are filled with the Holy Spirit, gluttony prevents one from having a pure heart and from being filled with the Holy Spirit. We are very conscious of the fact that no one can deliver himself from gluttony. Do not try to set yourself free. If you try, you may succeed for some time but it will be short-lived. Surrender yourself with your problem to the Holy Spirit who lives in you and submit yourself to his treatment. He will succeed and then you too will succeed. You will be set free and your freedom will be permanent.
Book Synopsis DREAM OF DELIVERANCE by : Mona Harrington
Download or read book DREAM OF DELIVERANCE written by Mona Harrington and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major work of historical and political analysis, Mona Harrington examines curcial missteps and uncertainties in the American statecraft from Woodrow Wilson’s time to Ronald Reagan’s, and traces them to a potent myth at the center of our political thinking. It is a myth peculiarly American, a long-held belief that the troubles of society can be traced to some specific “evil”—be it a profiteering in munitions, or the multinational corporation, or the communist conspiracy, or wasteful social programs—and that by smiting the evil we can achieve social well-being for all. The author demonstrates how deeply this dream of deliverance has been rooted in American culture from the very beginnings of the nation—in the concept of a society in which conflicts between groups of widely divergent interests can be resolved without undeserved loss to any party. We see the consequences of this belief in our continuing tendency to oversimplify issues both domestic and foreign—and in our obsessive expenditure of public energy on the search for and pursuit of the evil to be exorcised. The dilemma is further exacerbated because the country’s three major economic-interest groups—industrial wage earners, industrial owners and managers, and the cluster of interests tied to local economies—are prone to demonologies as widely divergent as their interests, and there can seldom be agreement as to the identity of the evil. How this bondage to the dream of deliverance has affected the functioning of American government—making our politics a never-ending argument whose terms have scarcely changed over the past century—is brilliant explicated. Connecting the deepest workings of statecraft to what we know about the dynamics of our own individual lives, this highly original book leads us away from a myth-driven politics and toward a difficult encounter with reality, toward liberation from the endless search for the serpent whose defeat with return us to Eden, toward a national recognition that in conditions of conflict it is not always possibly for all to emerge as winners, toward the shaping of a politics that will enable us to allocate in the most decent possible way the losses that we cannot avoid.
Book Synopsis Deliverance From Evil by : Frances Hill
Download or read book Deliverance From Evil written by Frances Hill and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2012-04-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Historian Hill utilizes her extensive research on the Salem Witch Trials to bone-chilling effect in this riveting tale of a town spiraling out of control.” —Booklist Deliverance from Evil brings to life the Salem witch trials, one of the most uncanny times in our nation’s history. Young girls in trances pointed out neighbors, leaders, relatives—over 150 people were arrested, with many hanged for their supposed sins. Frances Hill, author of A Delusion of Satan, brings her deep historical and political understanding together with her honed skills as a novelist to produce a picture of the trials both realistic and emotional. She has written an extraordinary and gripping novel of hysteria, power plays, and love in colonial America. “Frances Hill is a renowned historian of the period who has turned to fiction—with great success—to get into the minds and souls of those involved based, for the most part, on real people. It is hard not to feel oneself caught up in the hysteria and religious fervour of those horrifying events.” —Daily Mail “Hill’s done a fine job with a subject that’s inspired countless accounts, adding historical content that makes this treatment stand out from the rest.” —Publishers Weekly “With her admirable gift for dialogue and her ability to depict a time and place with telling incident, Hill is a welcome recruit to the ranks of historical novelists.” —Historical Novel Society
