If getting words out of a book into the mind, and out of the mind into the air, is reading, then, the rudiments once mastered, the less of it the better. To cut down the time allotted to such formalities, -and give it to nature study or history or algebra or F rench, was so much clear gain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americanization: A School Reader and Speaker "Americanization - to give the term its most comprehensive meaning - is the business of making good American citizens, the business of acquainting every one who inhabits American soil with both physical and spiritual America, to the end that this acquaintance may result in a sturdy loyalty to American institutions and American ideals, and in the habit of living the life of the good American citizen. To Americanize America it is necessary, truly to reach the native born and the immigrant, the adult and the child in school; and incidentally, the task of Americanizing the newcomer will be rendered comparatively easy if we can but succeed first in Americanizing ourselves." In this "business of making good American citizens" we naturally think, first of all, of the citizens-in-the-making, the boys and girls in our schools; for Americanization, broadly considered, means education for citizenship. This book is intended for use in the intermediate, grammar, and lower high school grades as a reader and speaker. It contains selections from historic American documents and from the writings and speeches of eminent publicists, dealing with various phases of the Americanization problem. The elections are grouped under the following captions: (1) FoundationStones in our History and Institutions, (2) The Story and Meaning of Our Flag, (3) Great Names in American History, (4) Incentives to Patriotism, (5) Present-day Problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School Prize Speaker This is a collection of literary selections which have taken prizes at the J. Murray Kay Prize-Speaking Contest held annually for the last quarter of a century at the Brookline High School, together with other selections of equal merit which on these occasions have either won honorable mention or been received with especial favor by the audience. The interest which Mr. Kay took in establishing and maintaining these contests set a high standard of excellence, and no pains were spared by the school to make the selections and their interpretation the best possible. The committee of the faculty which guided the contestants in the choice of suitable pieces insisted first that the selection must be from the work of a good author; for it held that the amount of time spent by teacher and student in preparation for prize-speaking could hardly be justified if the selections themselves possessed little or no literary merit. The best literature has most fully the latent power to move the hearer, and waits only for the speakers art to become kinetic. Indeed, this power to grip and hold the audience which is native to our great masterpieces may be felt even when the reading is from the silent page. But prose or poetry which makes no strong appeal to our imagination, convictions, or sympathies, but savors of shallow sentimentalism, is not good literature and fails when put to the test before an audience refined in taste and critical in judgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cumnock's School Speaker: Rhetorical Recitations for Boys and Girls That young people prefer reading or speaking wexercises which are presented to them in some form 22 of story or romance to those of a didactic character, eis a fact familiar to every instructor. A recognition 3 of this preference has led the compiler of this little rvolume to include only such selections as seem to 'appeal directly to the fancy and the feelings of ff youth Great care has been taken to exclude all Texcessive or weakly sentiment, and to furnish only fthat which is fresh, Wholesome, and inspiring. The gcliief aim, however, has been to secure selections I possessing good speaking qualities, and at the same time to make a collection of the brightest and rarest specimens of juvenile literature in our language. No attempt has been made to grade the selections from the more juvenile specimens to the more mature, or to introduce any elocutionary advice, which would necessarily be so meagre as to be of little value. As this is a companion to a work by the same compiler. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It carries out the principles laid down in the First Reader. It is purely literary. That is, every selection is representative of standard children's literature. The Primer and the first part of the First Reader are devoted to teaching children to read their already familiar vocabulary. At the same time by slow degrees they are made acquainted with the form and appearance of simple folklore and its word. When this point has been reached, no "made up" lessons are used. The authors believe that the whole time given to reading books in school should be spent upon worthy literature, in cultivating taste for good reading. They follow this creed consistently throughout the series. This book especially makes much use of the "repetitional" story, in which words and phrased occur repeatedly. The more difficult words are given before the lessons in which they occur. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It assumes that they can read the usual vocabulary of a good primer, either of this series or of any other. It is, however, closely related to the American School Primer. The children and their pets, whose acquaintance was made in that book, appear again here, with new experiences, in the earlier pages. But the keynote of the book is children's lore. The characters of the primer appear less and less frequently and finally drop out altogether. The latter part of the book contains children's literature only. The authors believe that this literature is of so excel lent a quality that it will intensify the interest of chil dren in the reading book, and hence in learning to read, and will also implant the seeds of good literary taste. Carefully organized lists of words for phonic drill are given on pages 135 - 137. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reader's Basis Experience has shown that the subject of literary composition, taught in successive grades during a period of two or three school years, is not grasped by the student with any sense of the unity of the whole, and that, therefore, near the end of the required course in English, a review should be given which will unify what the student has previously learned. Moreover, since it is the main purpose of the early part of the English course to stimulate and train a student's power of expression, and to present the subject of literary composition from a writer's or speaker's point of view, so it should be the main purpose of the latter part of the course to train the student's power to read, and to present the same subject from the reader's point of view. It is, therefore, the object of this book to unify the impressions received by students during a course vin English by giving in condensed statement the whole theory of literary composition, presenting the subject from a reader's rather than a writer's point of view. The book is intended to be used during the last half year of a required English course, and is intended to lay the basis for advanced elective courses, and for the regular English courses in college. Although the book is intended primarily for use in the class-room, it is purposely put in a form which may be acceptable to the general reader. Every one who reads the lectures will notice that many things are repeated, and that others are stated in different language. This results from the fact that the matter contained in the book was originally spoken. For in accordance with the rules Of rhetoric, any subject must be treated more fully when it is delivered in words than when it is written upon paper. When a speaker is speaking, he knows that if he does not make his statements clear, the hearers may never have the Opportunity Of a thorough understanding Of what he says. N ot so, however, when the statements are written down, for the. Writer knows that the reader can, if he wishes, refer again and again to the written or printed matter. These considerations cause a speaker to 'use more words, and to spend more time upon any subject than a writer finds necessary The writer can condense; but the speaker, in order to be understood, must enlarge and amplify.
