Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the conceptual, methodological and praxeological aspects of dialectical analysis in world politics. As dialectics has remained an under-theorised analytical tool in international relations, this volume provides a critical resource for those seeking to deploy dialectics in their own research by showcasing its effectiveness for understanding and transforming world politics. Contributions demonstrate a number of innovative ways in which dialectical thinking can be of benefit to the study of world politics by covering three thematic concerns: (i) conceptual or meta-theoretical dimensions of dialectics; (ii) methodological features and general principles of dialectical approaches; and (iii) applications and/or case studies that deploy a dialectical approach to world politics. Canvassing a diverse range of dialectical approaches on key issues in world politics – from global security to postcolonial resistances, from the theoretical problems of reification and complexity, to the study of the global futures and the intercultural historical expressions of dialectics – Dialectics and World Politics offers key insights into the social forces and contradictions that are generative of transformation in world politics and yet routinely downplayed in orthodox approaches to international relations. Each chapter demonstrates how dialectics can be utilized more broadly in the discipline and deployed in a critical fashion as part of an emancipatory project. This book was originally published as a special issue of Globalizations.

Book excerpt: Terrorism, Politics, and Human Rights Advocacy provides an insider-outsider analysis of the #BringBackOurGirls (#BBOG) movement. Formed through a coalition of elite women and middle-class allies to advocate for the rescue of over 200 high school girls from Chibok, Nigeria, who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014, the movement is a global leader in the 'lives matter' advocacy and a new episode in African women-led rights movements. Based on data garnered from over 170 research participants, Oriola demonstrates how the #BBOG transformed the Chibok kidnapping into an international cause and a social problem in a sociological sense, inadvertently creating a social problem industry. The volume provides in-depth analyses of the organizational structure, decision-making, repertoire of protest, framing, internal dynamics, and divisions within the #BBOG. Far more than a social media phenomenon, the #BBOG deploys a hybridized communication process which seamlessly combines the time-space compression of social media with the relative fidelity and territoriality of traditional media. State repression against the #BBOG and response of movement actors are also articulated, and the outcomes and impact of the #BBOG explicated. The BBOG experience speaks to the texture of the African state and its military architecture, party politics, and challenges to human rights advocacy; the findings speak to peace and security in Africa, the war against terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, perpetuation of social problems, and outcomes of social movements in the postcolony. Oxford Studies in African Politics and International Relations is a series for scholars and students working on African politics and International Relations and related disciplines. Volumes concentrate on contemporary developments in African political science, political economy, and International Relations, such as electoral politics, democratization, decentralization, gender and political representation, the political impact of natural resources, the dynamics and consequences of conflict, comparative political thought, and the nature of the continent's engagement with the East and West. Comparative and mixed methods work is particularly encouraged, as is interdisciplinary research and work that considers ethical issues relating to the study of Africa. Case studies are welcomed but should demonstrate the broader theoretical and empirical implications of the study and its wider relevance to contemporary debates. The focus of the series is on sub-Saharan Africa, although proposals that explain how the region engages with North Africa and other parts of the world are of interest. Series Editors: Nic Cheeseman, Professor of Democracy and International Development, University of Birmingham; Peace Medie, Senior Lecturer in Gender and International Politics, University of Bristol; and Ricardo Soares de Oliveira, Professor of the International Politics of Africa, University of Oxford.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989, this is a unique reference source to the social attitudes of British adolescents of the time. The authors, both experienced researchers, draw on a sample of over 2,000 adolescents from all over the British Isles, including Northern Ireland and the north of Scotland as well as the south of England and Wales. They provide one of the most comprehensive reviews of the 1980s, with the results summarized in tables supported by clear commentaries. The contents range widely over key issues of the time, covering attitudes to politics and government, crime and law enforcement, sex roles and race, religion and the paranormal, health and the environment, school, work and unemployment, and home entertainment media. Some of the book’s findings are unexpected: young people are surprisingly conservative about the role of men and women, for instance, yet they have radical ideas about certain institutions, like the monarchy. Altogether the book gives a clear and revealing snapshot of the attitudes of young Britons of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1950s in India were a crucial transition phase where the legacy and institutions of British rule had to be transformed to fit the needs of a post-colonial state. This period is closely associated with India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru (1947 – 64). Selecting three key policies closely associated with him, the book traces the political origins of the Panchasheela Agreement with China in 1954, the Hindu Code Bills of 1955 and 1956 and the founding of the Planning Commission in 1950. Each provides a window into the compulsions of Indian domestic politics at the time as well as the parameters of parliamentary debate. The book goes on to discuss how these policies correspond to the pillars of Nehru’s vision for a modern, independent India that encapsulated socialism, nonalignment and secularism and assesses their long-run impact in Indian politics. With a growing recognition of the resilience of India’s political arrangements, the analysis is particularly relevant to those interested in the politics of transition and modernisation, and contributes to studies on Political Institutions and South Asian Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kind of society you want to live in depends upon what you politically believe. Each political party has embraced a Worldview of how society should be structured and how people should interact. Each party is striving to create a world structured by their Worldview. The goal of politics is to place individuals in positions of control over society who will create or preserve that structure. That is the same goal as war - to place people in charge of society who will create a structure for society that will result in the establishment of the kind of society the victors want to live in. For some people how they live is worth fighting for. For many, how they live is worth dying for. Politics is war! You are the foot soldier. So what do you believe? The Political Primer will help you to determine what it is you politically believe and which Worldview you already embrace. You will soon realize politics is not about what other people think or what other people believe. Politics is about what you think and what you believe. Here are three of the facts that politicians and elected officials do not want you to know: 1. Politics is not complicated. 2. Only four basic political philosophies exist. 3. Politics is entirely about you! Fundamental political concepts introduced in Part One are used to develop four political philosophies. There are only four! Part Two uses both trivial and controversial issues to illustrate the application of the political concepts of Part One. Part Three will illustrate the power of the political concepts presented and will further clarify how politics is utilized to change the structure of society. The Epilog is both a commentary and a test. The test is not to determine whether you agree or disagree with the Author's commentary. The test is to determine for yourself whether you now understand why you agree or disagree. The Political Primer will have accomplished its goal if you know why. You will have become politically astute. There are four possible future worlds. Which one do you want to build?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following on from Public Schools and the Great War, Sir Anthony Seldon and David Walsh now examine those same schools in the Second World War. Privileged conservative traditions of private schools were challenged in the inter-war years by the changing social and political landscape, including a greater role for the alumni of girls’ public schools. What was that public school spirit in 1939 and how did it and its products cope with, and contribute to, the requirements of a modern global conflict both physically and intellectually? The book answers these questions by, for example, examining the public schools’ role in the development and operations of the RAF in unconventional warfare and code-breaking. At home there was bombing, evacuation and the threat of invasion. Finally, the authors study how public schools shaped the way the war was interpreted culturally and how they responded to victory in 1945 and hopes of a new social order. This fascinating book draws widely on primary source material and personal accounts of inspiring courage and endurance.
