Book excerpt: The Scarlet Plague, by Jack London: This is a Masterpiece Collection Book Club Edition publication. We have created an after chapter template for notes, character names, and general summary of the chapter. This helps the reader retain the information better. These books are great for not only bookclub readers. They are great for students, and casual readers as well. Having your own notes to draw from helps when writing a book report. Having a bookclub discussion about several chapters. It is great help remembering characters and their significance later in the book. These are not cheat books! We have not done the work for you. You have to read the book and you need to take the notes. Using the templates at the end of each chapter will give you a greater understanding of the work. I love to read and have read thousands of books, but I still forget things that happened hundreds of pages before. These books enable the reader to have a point of reference . Turning the corner of the page and highlighting can help, but returning to your own words helps so much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Scarlet Plague" is a post-apocalyptic novel by Jack London, published in 1912. The story takes place in 2073, sixty years after a deadly epidemic called the Red Death has wiped out most of the world's population. The protagonist, James Smith, is one of the few survivors and travels with his grandsons, who live as hunter-gatherers in a depopulated world. Smith recounts his life before the plague, when he was an English professor, and how the disease spread rapidly, killing victims within 30 minutes of first seeing symptoms. Despite the public's trust in doctors and scientists, no cure was found. Smith witnesses the first victim of the scarlet plague while teaching, and soon after, an epidemic overtakes the area, causing residents to riot and kill each other. Smith's entire party dies out, leaving him as the sole survivor. He lives for three years on his own before discovering a new society created by a few survivors who have broken into tribes. The Scarlet Plague was published in book form in 1915 by Macmillan and was later reprinted in the February 1949 issue of Famous Fantastic Mysteries. The novel falls into a genre of apocalyptic fiction featuring a universal plague that nearly wipes out humanity, similar to other works such as Mary Shelley's The Last Man and Stephen King's The Stand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of the American city in post-apocalyptic ruin permeate literary and popular fiction, across print, visual, audio and digital media. American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction explores the prevalence of these representations in American culture, drawing from a wide range of primary and critical works from the early-twentieth century to today. Beginning with science fiction in literary magazines, before taking in radio dramas, film, video games and expansive transmedia franchises, Robert Yeates argues that post-apocalyptic representations of the American city are uniquely suited for explorations of contemporary urban issues. Examining how the post-apocalyptic American city has been repeatedly adapted and repurposed to new and developing media over the last century, this book reveals that the content and form of such texts work together to create vivid and immersive fictional spaces in ways that would otherwise not be possible. Chapters present media-specific analyses of these texts, situating them within their historical contexts and the broader history of representations of urban ruins in American fiction. Original in its scope and cross-media approach, American Cities in Post-Apocalyptic Science Fiction both illuminates little-studied texts and provides provocative new readings of familiar works such as Blade Runner and The Walking Dead, placing them within the larger historical context of imaginings of the American city in ruins.
