A total of 127 species are recorded from Colombia, representing six families: Argidae (48 species), Tenthredinidae (37) Pergidae (37), Xiphydriidae (3 species), Siricidae (1 species) and Orussidae (1 species). 11 genera and 68 species are new records for Colombia, doubling the number of previously reported species. Heteroperreyia (Pergidae) is recorded for the first time in northern South America. Most records and species are concentrated in the Andean region. Four new species are described: Acrogymnidia catalina Malagón-Aldana, sp. nov., Ptenos amazonicus Malagón-Aldana, sp. nov. (Argidae), Heteroperreyia andina Malagón-Aldana, sp. nov. (Pergidae) and Derecyrta risaraldensis Malagón-Aldana, sp. nov. (Xiphydriidae). The following taxonomic changes are proposed, and lectotypes designated for all these nominal taxa: Dochmioglene suppar (Konow, 1903), comb. n., Plaumanniana parmata (Konow, 1903), comb. n., and Proselandria analis (Fabricius, 1804), comb. n.; Plaumanniana biclinia (Konow, 1899) = Stromboceros marcidus Konow, 1899, syn. n.; Proselandria analis (Fabricius, 1804) = Stromboceros brevispinis Konow, 1908, syn. n., Monophadnus trichiotomus Cameron, 1911, syn. n. and Romaniola amazonica Forsius, 1925, syn. n. The intent was to bring together biologists who have worked on arthropods that are either plant or animal parasites in order to foster consideration of general aspects of the parasitic way of life. There seems to be a deficiency of ecological and evolutionary concepts relating to parasitism, in contrast to the burgeoning literature on predation, and it appeared that an amalgamation of studies on plant and animal parasites might help development of some generalities. Since parasities are far more numerous than predators in the world fauna, or in any particular community, emphasis on their study is justified. I freely admit that para sitoids have been usefully regarded as predators by ecologists, and many concepts on predation have been derived from their study. Also, in whichever category one places the parasitoids, that is the one which contains the most species. However, from an evolu tionary point of view they show many characteristics that must be regarded as those of a parasite. Notably, they are small, highly specific to their host, highly coevolved with it, as a result many species can coexist, and their adaptive radiation has produced the majority of the species diversity seen on Earth today.

The fine line between presenting a few topics in great detail or many topics in veneer has been carefully drawn, such that the book contains sufficient diversity to cover the field and a few topics in some depth. After the reader has penetrated the crust of what has been learned about chemical ecology of insects, the deficiencies in our understanding of this field should become evident. These deficiencies, to which no chapter topic is immune, indicate the youthful state of chemical ecology and the need for further investigations, especially those with potential for integrating elements that are presently isolated from each other. At the outset of this volume it becomes evident that, although we are beginning to decipher how receptor cells work, virtually nothing is known of how sensory information is coded to become relevant to the insect and to control the behavior of the insect. This problem is exacerbated by the state of our knowledge of how chemicals are distributed in nature, especially in complex habitats. And finally, we have been unable to understand the significance of orientation pathways of insects, in part because of the two previous problems: orientation seems to depend on patterns of distri bution of chemicals, the coding of these patterns by the central nervous system, and the generation of motor output based on the resulting motor commands.
