Download or read book Humanist Essays (Routledge Revivals) written by Gilbert Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1964, this is a short collection of both literary and philosophical essays. Whilst two essays consider Greek literature written at the point at which the Athenian empire was breaking apart, another group explore the background from which Christianity arose, considering Paganism and the religious philosophy at the time of Christ. These, in particular, display Gilbert Murray’s ‘profound belief in ethics and disbelief in all revelational religions’ as well as his conviction that the roots of our society lie within Greek civilization. Finally, there is an interesting discussion of Order and the motives of those who seek to overthrow it.

Book Synopsis Blake and the New Age (Routledge Revivals) by : Kathleen Raine
Download or read book Blake and the New Age (Routledge Revivals) written by Kathleen Raine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this is a very welcome reissue of Kathleen Raine's seminal study of William Blake - England’s only prophet. He challenged with extraordinary vigour the premises which now underline much of Western civilization, hitting hard at the ideas of a naive materialist philosophy which, even in his own day, was already eating at the roots of English national life. In his insistence that ‘mental things are alone real’, Blake was ahead of his time. Materialist views are now challenged from various quarters; the depth psychologies of Freud and Jung, the study of Far Easter religion and philosophy, the reappraisal of myth and folk lore, the wealth of psychical research have all prepared the way for an understanding of Blake’s thought. We are ready to acknowledge that in attacking ‘the sickness of Albion’ Blake penetrated to the inner worlds of man and explored them in a way that is quite unique. Dr Raine, who has made a long study of Blake’s sources, presents him as a lonely powerful genius who stands within the spiritual tradition of Sophia Perennis, ‘the Everlasting Gospel’. From the standpoint of this great human Norm, our immediate past described by W.B. Yeats as ‘the three provincial centuries’, is a tragic deviation; catastrophic, as Blake believed, in its spiritual and material consequences. Only now do we possess the necessary knowledge to understand William Blake and the ever-growing number of people who turn to him surely justifies his faith in the eternal truths he strove to communicate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SOME OPINIONS OF THE PRESS ON "THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD" VOL. II. HIS DOMINION These reviews/comments followed the original release of His Dominion in 1908. Miss Charlotte Mason has now given us the second instalment of her elaborate work in verse on "The Saviour of the World." . . . Miss Mason renders into graceful and original verse part of the story of Christ as found in the Gospels. She seeks to cover each incident in His career, and each notable saying to which He gave utterance, in a single poem, the series to form a complete story. Her obvious sincerity and the high aim which is everywhere apparent make her pleasing verses singularly attractive. She is reverent throughout and always dignified. —Dundee Advertiser Miss Mason has much of the subtle skill of Browning, and her effusions breathe everywhere a spirit of deep devotion to "The Saviour of Mankind." —Catholic Times Miss Mason's gracefully versified tractate in Christian theology—for that is what the poem is—should be read without weariness by the devout . . . On its literary side the book will readily evoke the admiration and sympathy of readers who like to have familiar lessons of Christianity refreshed by good workmanship in metrical art. —Scotsman The first volume met with a very cordial reception, and now the talented authoress gives her second volume to the world. . . . The authoress employs the choicest language, and shows great skill in versification. The whole work, in fact, aims at giving the whole of the Gospel story in verse—not a small task, by any means, but one for which Miss Mason seems to be specially endowed. —Western Mail Miss Mason here continues what she modestly describes as a "paraphrase in verse" of the Gospel story. As the writer aptly remarks, such a theme as this, in its sacred utterances and dramatic situations, finds a better medium of presentation in poetry than in prose. The first stage or act of the inspired narrative, The Holy Infancy, being completed, Miss Mason passes on to the Ministry of Our Lord at its commencement and first teaching (Sermon on the Mount and earlier parables), and first miracles . . . the sequence of the work is marked no less by the skill of the author than by the reverent spirit in which it is composed. Echoes of George Herbert and of Isaac Williams are to be caught here and there in the various pieces, as. E.g. where paraphrasing a passage in the Sermon on the Mount, Miss Mason writes: — "Nay, keep thy soul at eve, Nor e'er perceive The heavy odour of an unchaste thought." It would be difficult to express better the "atmosphere" of the new Paradise "regained" by Christ in place of that which was lost. —Bookseller The same careful, reverent handling of holy things characterises this new volume, which, like the former, is a paraphrase, in blank verse chiefly, of the Gospel narrative. —Guardian
Book Synopsis Man in the Modern Age (Routledge Revivals) by : Karl Jaspers
Download or read book Man in the Modern Age (Routledge Revivals) written by Karl Jaspers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in English in 1933, this detailed philosophical examination of the contemporary state and nature of mankind is a seminal work by influential German philosopher Karl Jaspers. Elucidating his theories on a variety of topics pertaining to contemporary and future human existence, Man in the Modern Age is an ambitious and wide-ranging work, which meditates upon such diverse subjects as the tension between mass-order and individual human life, our present conception of human life and the potential for mankind’s future existence. Written shortly before the accession to power of Hitler and National Socialism, this is not only an important philosophical work, but also an insightful and intriguing historical document.
