Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles is a sad and lonely boy. For years, he is beaten down and abused by his family. Two things keep him going — his grandmother and his yearning to change his circumstance. Cora is a pampered little girl; she is also a drama queen. These two children have one thing in common. Their families hide incredible ... supernatural secrets. Some members of their families can make things just disappear, others seem to kill and maim at will. The backdrop for this narrative is Jamaica. The island boasts rugged high mountains, mineral springs with curative powers, white coral beaches, and cold drenching waterfalls. Spicy foods, unusual plants and trees, exotic fruits, and the irrepressible Jamaican people, play their part in the magic that is Jamaica. The reader will be transported to a different world — a world where paranormal occurrences are not that unusual. Although this is young adult fiction, it will also appeal to readers who enjoy some intrigue and suspense, a few tears and a good laugh. This is a tale of love, loss, oppression, escape, and redemption.

That is one reason why it is of utmost importance for a child of God to begin their day with God. In Psalm 5:3, David declared, My voice shall you hear in the morning, Oh Lord. David understood the importance of meeting the Lord in the morning. In Psalm 63:1, he said, Oh God, early will I seek you. We are living in a volatile and vicious generation. Our enemy is attacking on every front. No Christian should ever consider leaving home until they have spent ample time with the Lord and armed themselves for spiritual battle. This daily devotional has been written to be a help for believers who want to spend time with their Father. Wake up each day and say “Good Morning God!”

Book excerpt: Cometh the Hour is the penultimate book in the Clifton Chronicles and, like the previous novels - all of which hit the New York Times bestseller list - showcases Jeffrey Archer's extraordinary storytelling with his trademark twists. It opens with the reading of a suicide note, which has devastating consequences for Harry and Emma Clifton, Giles Barrington and Lady Virginia. Giles must decide if he should withdraw from politics and try to rescue Karin, the woman he loves, from behind the Iron Curtain. But is Karin truly in love with him, or is she a spy? Lady Virginia is facing bankruptcy, and can see no way out of her financial problems, until she is introduced to the hapless Cyrus T. Grant III from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who's in England to see his horse run at Royal Ascot. Sebastian Clifton is now the Chief Executive of Farthings Bank and a workaholic, whose personal life is thrown into disarray when he falls for Priya, a beautiful Indian girl. But her parents have already chosen the man she is going to marry. Meanwhile, Sebastian's rivals Adrian Sloane and Desmond Mellor are still plotting to bring him and his chairman Hakim Bishara down, so they can take over Farthings. Harry Clifton remains determined to get Anatoly Babakov released from a gulag in Siberia, following the international success of his acclaimed book, Uncle Joe. But then something unexpected happens that none of them could have anticipated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark McCray wasn’t the only boy who loved Saturday morning cartoons, but he may have been the only one to call the networks and tell them what he liked and disliked about them. For instance, he was blown away by the direction Hanna-Barbera took with Josie and the Pussycats, the kids in the wrong place at the wrong time who rose to the occasion and saved the day. It wasn’t long before he was writing his own newsletter, titled The Best Saturdays of Our Lives, which he circulated to animation and television executives, networks, studios, and comic book publishers. The newsletters chronicle the origins of competitive Saturday morning programming—from the 1966–67 season straight through to the 1990s—and they’re compiled in one place for easy reference in this book. You’ll get an insider’s look at the inner workings of the cartoon and television industries, competition between broadcast networks, and how the industry has changed over the years. Mark’s curiosity, probing insights and love of television, come together to create The Best Saturdays of Our Lives.

But his mother has a knack for sabotaging his plans. To advance her political career, she takes in an elderly black man named Lester Bray. Lester arrives with a vintage Cadillac and an old man's personality. It takes only a week for Alex's mother to ask Lester to leave. That makes Alex angry. On the morning of his eviction, Lester and Alex set out on a road trip ostensibly to find the boy's father in Ft. Lauderdale. But the two don't just head south. They also cross through un-navigated political, racial, and personal territory. A wild ride, Cadillac Chronicles explores what it means to—finally—find a real friend. Brett Hartman lived an unremarkable life in Fort Lauderdale until May 18, 1983, when he was arrested for aggravated battery. While away at Auburn University, he suffered a psychotic breakdown and months of intensive treatment. Though he made a full recovery, the events of that period never left him. He continued his education at Indiana State, where he received a doctorate in clinical psychology; he has worked as a psychologist ever since. His memoir Hammerhead 84 covers his journey through the mental health industry. Cadillac Chronicles is his debut novel. He lives in Albany, New York, with his wife and their two sons.

Download or read book Long Black Song written by Houston A. Baker and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Houston Baker maintains that black American culture, grounded in a unique historical experience, is distinct from any other, and that it has produced a body of literature that is equally and demonstrably unique in its sources, values, and modes of expression. He argues that black American literature is rooted in black folklore- animal tales, trickster slave tales, religious tales, folk songs, spirituals, and ballads- and that a knowledge of this tradition is essential to the understanding of any individual black author or work. To deomonstrate the continuity of this tradition, Baker examines themes that appear in folklore and persist throughout contemporary black literature. "Freedom and Apocalypse," for example, traces the idea that black Americans are a chosen people who will, by some violent means, overthrow the white man's tyranny. The essays culminate in an examination of the life and work of Richard Wright. Baker's treatment of Wright as a black American artist who recorded the black man's shift from an agrarian to an urban setting places Wright and the tradition of black literature and culture in a fresh perspective.
