Book Synopsis A Voyage to California, the Sandwich Islands, and Around the World in the Years 1826–1829 by : Auguste Duhaut-Cilly
Download or read book A Voyage to California, the Sandwich Islands, and Around the World in the Years 1826–1829 written by Auguste Duhaut-Cilly and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-12-22 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While French sea captain Auguste Duhaut-Cilly may not have become wealthy from his around-the-world travels between 1826 and 1829, his trip has enriched historians interested in early nineteenth-century California. Because of a poor choice in goods to trade he found it necessary to spend nearly two years on the Alta and Baja California coasts before disposing of his cargo and returning to France. What was bad luck for Duhaut-Cilly was good luck for us, however, because he recorded his impressions of the region's natural history and human populations in a diary. This translation of Duhaut-Cilly's writing offers today's readers a rare eyewitness account of the pastoral society that was Mexican California, including the missions at the height of their power. A veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Duhaut-Cilly was an educated man conversant in Spanish and English. He was also Catholic, which gave him special access to the California missions. Thus his diary allows the reader an insider's view of the padres' lives, including their dealings with the military. Through his eyes we see the region's indigenous people and how they were treated, and we're privy to his commentary on the behavior of the Californios. This translation also contains Duhaut-Cilly's account of the Sandwich Islands portion of his voyage and provides an authentic rendering of life at sea during the early nineteenth century. In the spirit of Richard Henry Dana's Two Years before the Mast, Duhaut-Cilly's reflections are a historical gem for anyone with a love of personal narratives and original accounts of the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Sandwich Islands: Or the Heart of the Pacific, as It Was and Is We call this book The Heart of the Pacific, for two reasons: first, because the Sandwich or Hawaiian Islands, which form its subject-matter, hold about the same relation to other parts of the Pacific as the heart does to the rest of the human body. Second, because these Islands bid fair to become the religious Protestant Heart of the great Ocean, whose pulsations at different times we have herein marked and interpreted. Although independent and whole of itself, it has a connection which will be seen with The Island-World of the Pacific. The writer believes it may fulfil a useful part, in directing the general interest now felt in the young Island-Kingdom of Hawaii. The perpetuity of the pure Hawaiian race there is daily becoming more and more doubtful. But, as it has been remarked of New Zealand, the natives, though melting away, are not lost. They are emerging into another and a. better class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Six Months in the Sandwich Islands by : Isabella L. Bird
Download or read book Six Months in the Sandwich Islands written by Isabella L. Bird and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic of Hawaiian literature offers a charming glimpse at the splendid and fascinating world of pre–American Hawaii. Isabella Lucy Bird won fame in her own time as the most remarkable woman traveler of the nineteenth century, and Six Months in the Sandwich Isles, in which she describes her sojourn in Hawaii in 1873, is one of the gems of Pacific literature. It is safe to say that no other book about Hawaii surpasses it in fascination. Much of the charm of Isabella's writing is due to her use of personal letters for conveying her her experiences and her impressions. The thirty–one letters that compose the book were written to her beloved sister Henrietta, who dutifully stayed at home in Edinburgh to take care of the household while Isabella was away on her travels. The book is an authentic record of daily life in Hawaii in the late nineteenth century. It describes a life style during the brief reign of King Lunalilo, not too may years before the sad reign of Queen Liliuokalani ended her dethronement by revolution. Isabella Bird met royalty, missionaries, cowboys, and ordinary, everyday Hawaiians. It is fortunate that she left such a vivid narrative of her Hawaiian Interlude.
