Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1868, four treasure hunters from San Marcos, Texas, searched for a lost mine on the San Saba River, near today’s Menard. It was popularized as folklore in J. Frank Dobie’s treasure legend classic Coronado’s Children. One hundred and fifty years later, a descendant of one of those four men set out to discover the history behind the legend. This book recounts that search, from the founding of the ill-fated 1757 mission on the San Saba River up to the last attempt, in 1990, to find the treasure in this particular legend. It describes Jim Bowie, a fake treasure map industry, murder trials, a rattlesnake dancer, fortunes lost, a very long Texas cave, and surprising twists to the story popularized by Dobie. The book will not lead anyone to the legendary ten-thousand pounds of silver, but it will open a treasure trove of Texas history and the unique characters who hunted the fabulous riches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Texas abounds with legends of buried treasure and lost mines. The Big Bend country, the Red River region, McMullen County, San Jacinto, Nacogdoches, and San Augustine are all treasure troves of tales of fabulous wealth that still lies just beyond man's reach. These legends are as sizable as the state itself, and J. Frank Dobie, perhaps Texas' greatest historian, devoted years of his life to collecting and cataloging them. The stories in this first volume were originally published in 1924 by the Texas Folklore Society, and represent some of the enduring tales that have embellished the history of the state. Pelican Publishing Company is proud to present this wonderful collection in mass-market paperback form as part of our Pelican Pouch series. Included in this volume are "The Legend of San Saba," "Lost Gold of the Llano Country," "Treasure Chest on the Nueces," and "Lost Mine Near Sabinal," to name only a few. Dobie believed that worthwhile literature about this region had to be derived from an understanding of its life, lore, and history. The legends in this work, as well as those in volume II of this series, were regarded by Dobie as "the most influential in opening the eyes of people to the richness of their own traditions." Legends of Texas indirectly led to the founding of the Texas Folklore Society, the nation's second oldest folklore organization. Pelican has had Legends of Texas Vol. I: Lost Mines and Buried Treasure in print since 1975.

Book excerpt: “This is the best work ever written on hidden treasure, and one of the most fascinating books on any subject to come out of Texas.” —Basic Texas Books Written in 1930, Coronado’s Children was one of J. Frank Dobie’s first books, and the one that helped gain him national prominence as a folklorist. In it, he recounts the tales and legends of those hardy souls who searched for buried treasure in the Southwest following in the footsteps of that earlier gold seeker, the Spaniard Coronado. “These people,” Dobie writes in his introduction, “no matter what language they speak, are truly Coronado’s inheritors . . . I have called them Coronado’s children. They follow Spanish trails, buffalo trails, cow trails, they dig where there are no trails; but oftener than they dig or prospect they just sit and tell stories of lost mines, of buried bullion by the jack load . . .” This is the tale-spinning Dobie at his best, dealing with subjects as irresistible as ghost stories and haunted houses. “As entrancing a volume as one is likely to pick up in a month of Sundays.” —The New York Times “Dobie has discovered for us a native Arabian Night.” —Chicago Evening Post

Countless fortunes have disappeared into the vast expanse of the Lone Star State. The history of the coast is cluttered with shipwrecks like that of the 1554 Spanish fleet. Even when pirates such as Jean Laffite managed to get their ill-gotten gains ashore, their loot vanished just as completely as if it had sunk beneath the waves. Entire mines, including the ventures of Jim Bowie and San Saba Presidio, have been reclaimed by the earth. The unmarked caches of bandits like Jesse James and Pancho Villa still bedevil the dreams of treasure seekers today. W. Craig Gaines reveals what has been lost, what has been found and what remains to be recovered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trammel’s Trace tells the story of a borderlands smuggler and an important passageway into early Texas. Trammel’s Trace, named for Nicholas Trammell, was the first route from the United States into the northern boundaries of Spanish Texas. From the Great Bend of the Red River it intersected with El Camino Real de los Tejas in Nacogdoches. By the early nineteenth century, Trammel’s Trace was largely a smuggler’s trail that delivered horses and contraband into the region. It was a microcosm of the migration, lawlessness, and conflict that defined the period. By the 1820s, as Mexico gained independence from Spain, smuggling declined as Anglo immigration became the primary use of the trail. Familiar names such as Sam Houston, David Crockett, and James Bowie joined throngs of immigrants making passage along Trammel’s Trace. Indeed, Nicholas Trammell opened trading posts on the Red River and near Nacogdoches, hoping to claim a piece of Austin’s new colony. Austin denied Trammell’s entry, however, fearing his poor reputation would usher in a new wave of smuggling and lawlessness. By 1826, Trammell was pushed out of Texas altogether and retreated back to Arkansas Even so, as author Gary L. Pinkerton concludes, Trammell was “more opportunist than outlaw and made the most of disorder.”

Book excerpt: "Mark Jones examines the making of a new child’s world in Japan between 1890 and 1930 and focuses on the institutions, groups, and individuals that reshaped both the idea of childhood and the daily life of children. Family reformers, scientific child experts, magazine editors, well-educated mothers, and other prewar urban elites constructed a model of childhood—having one’s own room, devoting time to homework, reading children’s literature, playing with toys—that ultimately became the norm for young Japanese in subsequent decades. This book also places the story of modern childhood within a broader social context—the emergence of a middle class in early twentieth century Japan. The ideal of making the child into a “superior student” (yutosei) appealed to the family seeking upward mobility and to the nation-state that needed disciplined, educated workers able to further Japan’s capitalist and imperialist growth. This view of the middle class as a child-centered, educationally obsessed, socially aspiring stratum survived World War II and prospered into the years beyond."
