This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old sailors loved nothing better than vying with one another at sea or in harbor to recognize a ship or boat on the horizon. It was sometimes an important life-saving talent to have in battle; modern boat enthusiasts, including yachtsman and fishermen, still like to indulge their nostalgic fancy in this old interest. There have been many thousands of water vessels developed within the last three and a half thousand years, from the simple wooden log or dug-out to the huge sophisticated ships of Brunel and other nineteenth century designers. It is the author's intention to give reader's a simple, quick reference book, illustrating and describing briefly some of these old ships and boats up to the turn of the century. It is not a definitive work (if it was it would be more than one volume), but a handy book for those many enthusiasts who love the sea and would like to know more about these old and interesting vessels.

Book Synopsis The Sailor's Word by : William Henry Smyth
Download or read book The Sailor's Word written by William Henry Smyth and published by Fireship Press. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 800 pages . 12,764 Definitions. The Most Complete Reference of Its Kind It's one thing to compile a dictionary of nautical terms from the Age of Sail; but it's quite another when the people doing the compiling actually lived them. That is exactly the situation in The Sailor's Word. William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) was in the Royal Navy for over 25 years, rising from a ship's boy on a West India merchantman to a Royal Navy Admiral. In addition to commanding several Royal Navy ships, he became world famous as a hydrographer (some of his charts were still in use in the 1960's), and as an astronomer (he eventually became president of the Royal Astronomical Society). The last years of his life, however, were spent compiling The Sailor's Word from his vast storehouse of nautical experience; but he died before he could see it published. His family decided to go forth with the publication of his final work. Their selection of an editor couldn't have been better: Sir Edward Belcher (1799-1877). Sir Edward was a Royal Navy officer with even more experience than Smyth. In his 40 years of service he captained numerous ships and generated a well-deserved reputation as a naval surveyor. His final command was of the unsuccessful expedition to find the missing and ill-fated explorer, Sir John Franklin. A cousin of Frederick Marryat, it can be plausibly argued that his novel, Horatio Howard Brenton, was the real model for C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. If you want to understand modern nautical fiction, you have to understand the language they used and the way they actually used it-not the way you think they used it.
Book Synopsis Paasch's Illustrated Marine Dictionary by : Heinrich Paasch
Download or read book Paasch's Illustrated Marine Dictionary written by Heinrich Paasch and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Heinrich Paasch was the first to recognize the complexity and variety in marine vocabulary and technical terminology and the inherent need for a cohesive classification of nautical terms. Equipped with over thirty-five years of seafaring experience, including as a sailor, captain, and as a Surveyor to Lloyd's Register, Paasch sets out, chapter by chapter, an exhaustive explanation of all the principal parts of a ship's structure and equipment. He describes the main types of steam and sailing vessels; wooden and iron hulls; propulsion machinery; anchors and related equipment; masts and spars; standing and running rigging, as well as sails, tackle, blocks and ropes. He concludes with knots, bends, hitches, and splices and finally provides a listing of standard measurements. Paasch's stated intention to describe a ship literally “From Keel to Truck” has been widely applauded as has his inclusion of the equivalent terms in French and German alongside the English. Each section is accompanied by dozens of high-quality line engravings to accompany the text and illustrate the terminology and concept described. First published in 1885, and an invaluable resource ever since, Captain Paasch’s dictionary is both a full encyclopedia and an unequaled introduction for anyone interested in steam and sailing ships, life aboard a ship, engineering, or simply understanding the language.
