Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the Pony Express, which carried transcontinental mail from April 3, 1860 to October 24, 1861, is one of the most invigorating and satisfying episodes in American history. Saddles and Spurs: The Pony Express Saga brings together a storehouse of information about this brilliant operation. Projected against an account of the historical background—the great overland mail issue, the freighting and the stagecoach business, the development of the telegraph and the Pacific railroad—is the narrative of the Pony Express's organization and the laying out of its route; biographical sketches of the founders, company personnel, and riders; and a list and description of the stations. While undertaking their exhaustive research, the authors collected some three hundred photographs, of which more than fifty of the best appear in this volume.

Book excerpt: An account of the most remarkable mail service ever in existence, and its place in history. The Pony Express was the first rapid transit and the first fast mail line across the North American continent from the Missouri River to the Pacific Coast. It was a system by means of which messages were carried swiftly on horseback across the plains and deserts, and over the mountains of the far West. It brought the Atlantic coast and the rapidly developing state of California ten days nearer to each other. The Pony Express had only a brief existence, from April 1860 to October 1861, when it was supplanted by the trans-continental telegraph. Yet it was of the greatest importance in binding the East and West together at a time when overland travel was slow and cumbersome, and when a great national crisis made the rapid communication of news between these sections an imperative necessity. The Pony Express marked the highest development in overland travel prior to the coming of the Pacific railroad, which it preceded by nine years. In fact, it proved the feasibility of a transcontinental road and demonstrated that such a line could be built and operated continuously the year around - a feat that had always been regarded as impossible. The operation of the Pony Express was a supreme achievement of physical endurance on the part of man and his ever faithful companion, the horse. The history of this organization should be a lasting monument to the physical sacrifice of man and beast in an effort to accomplish something worthwhile. Its history should be an enduring tribute to American courage and American organizing genius.

Book excerpt: The 22-book American Milestone series is featured as "Retailers Recommended Fabulous Products" in the August 2012 edition of Educational Dealer magazine. For 18 months in 1860 and 1861, the Pony Express performed one of the most amazing feats of the Old West. A group of daring young riders and fast horses delivered the mail over 1,800 miles-from Missouri to California-in just 10 days! Learn how they rode day and night to connect the West with the East. This book includes: • Founders of the Pony Express • Need for Mail Service • Prime Ponies • Pony Express Stations • What's in that Mailbag? • Famous Riders • Takeover by the Telegraph • Hands-on Activities • Reproducible Activities • Glossary • Fascinating Facts • Timeline • And Lots More! The Pony Express is perhaps the most compelling story of America's "can do" spirit that shares not only the History of a still "wild and wooly" West but a prime example of the ingenuity and "stick-to-it" determination that built this country. Grab your saddle-and ride along with the Pony Express in the fun, informative, and "just can't put it down" book!
