Book excerpt: The Sacred Revival is a thought-provoking examination of the social, cultural, and personal development that is part of a new and unfolding era in our history. Its central thesis is that a new form of energy has entered our post-industrial (post-mechanical) epoch, and that this energy will be more conducive to a respect for feminine attributes and organization and our inward “interior search and gaze.” The author predicts there will be a healing of life on the planet from an emerging new planetary ecosystem that will be physical-digital-biological and a greater drive toward a coherent cosmic consciousness. He explains that one of our greatest needs is for a connection with the transcendent.

Book excerpt: The Sacred Revival describes the search to fulfill one of humanity's greatest needs―a connection with the transcendent. Now a new phase of development is emerging, a revival of an evolutionary, participatory-style consciousness. The Sacred Revival examines some of the sacred manifestations of this unfolding epoch within social memes, popular culture, and revised projections of myth and magic. As we step further toward a decentralized and networked civilization where tangible technologies morph into intangible connections, author Kingsley Dennis discusses how each individual can act as a conscious agent in order to manifest their own sense of a sacred self, and how to influence and be a part of the grander sacred order. The Sacred Revival is an inspiring, thought-provoking, and forward-thinking examination of social, cultural, and personal development that is part of the newly unfolding era. The Sacred Revival describes how the modern mind is reenchanting the world as it recognizes the major potential for growth and exploration in humanity.

Book excerpt: This book presents current research in the political ecology of indigenous revival and its role in nature conservation in critical areas in the Americas. An important contribution to evolving studies on conservation of sacred natural sites (SNS), the book elucidates the complexity of development scenarios within cultural landscapes related to the appropriation of religion, environmental change in indigenous territories, and new conservation management approaches. Indigeneity and the Sacred explores how these struggles for land, rights, and political power are embedded within physical landscapes, and how indigenous identity is reconstituted as globalizing forces simultaneously threaten and promote the notion of indigeneity.

Book excerpt: This authoritative reference work investigates the roots of the Sacred Harp, the central collection of the deeply influential and long-lived southern tradition of shape-note singing. David Warren Steel and Richard H. Hulan concentrate on the regional culture that produced the Sacred Harp in the nineteenth century and delve deeply into history of its authors and composers. They trace the sources of every tune and text in the Sacred Harp, from the work of B. F. White, E. J. King, and their west Georgia contemporaries who helped compile the original collection in 1844 to the contributions by various composers to the 1936 to 1991 editions. Drawing on census reports, local histories, family Bibles and other records, rich oral interviews with descendants, and Sacred Harp Publishing Company records, this volume reveals new details and insights about the history of this enduring American musical tradition. David Waren Stel is an associate professor of music and southern culture at the University of Mississippi. Richard H. Hulan is an independent scholar of American folk hymnody.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred music has long contributed fundamentally to the making of Europe. The passage from origin myths to history, the sacred journeys that have mobilized pilgrims, crusaders, and colonizers, the politics and power sounded by the vox populi—all have joined in counterpoint to shape Europe’s historical longue durée. Drawing upon three decades of research in European sacred music, Philip V. Bohlman calls for a re-examination of European modernity in the twenty first century, a modernity shaped no less by canonic religious and musical practices than by the proliferation of belief systems that today more than ever respond to the diverse belief systems that engender the New Europe. In contrast to most studies of sacred musical practice in European history, with their emphasis on the musical repertories and ecclesiastical practices at the center of society, Bohlman turns our attention to individual and marginalized communities and to the collectives of believers to whose lives meaning accrues upon sounding the sacred together. In the historical chapters that open Revival and Reconciliation, Bohlman examines the genesis of modern history in the convergence and conflict the lie at the heart of the Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Critical to the meaning of these religions to Europe, Bohlman argues, has been their capacity to mobilize both sacred journey and social action, which enter the everyday lives of Europeans through folk religion, pilgrimage, and politics, the subjects of the second half of his study. The closing sections then cross the threshold from history into modernity, above all that of the New Europe, with its return to religion through revival and reconciliation. Based on an extensive ethnographic engagement with the sacred landscapes and sites of conflict in twenty-first-century Europe, Bohlman calls in his final chapters for new ways of hearing the silenced voices and the full chorus of sacred music in our contemporary world. Ethnomusicologists from different traditions as well as scholars of religious studies and the history of modern Europe will find Revival and Reconciliation a fascinating exploration of the connections between sacred music and the role it plays in the formations of the modern self.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it going to take to revive the American church and usher in a spiritual awakening in the country? The author was trapped in a downtown hospital in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. From that experience, Jerry Bass believes that God allowed this disaster in order to wake up the church from its spiritual lethargy. This book was written with an overwhelming conviction that revival in the American church is needed. Endorsements "Reading Jerry's book brought about different emotions in me. My first emotion was painful memories of a very difficult time in my life living in a city that was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. My second emotion was one of hope as Jerry called for revival in our city, state, and nation. Ladies and gentlemen WE NEED REVIVAL in America, and it MUST start in our churches!" Fred Luter, Jr., pastor, Franklin Avenue Baptist Church, New Orleans, Louisiana, president, Southern Baptist Convention Ive never seen the need for revival in the Church like I see it now. I pray for revival every day. I did not pray for revival before I read this book nor understand the difference between a revival and evangelization. I have also realized that 2 Chronicles 7:14 is directed to Gods people (that includes me!) and not to unbelievers. I believe that many American Christians will be touched by Gods Spirit as they read this book and glean from it that revival must start first with them. Book excerpt: The success of my revised edition of Mr Crawley's The Mystic Rose has encouraged me to bring together in the present volume some of his papers previously unpublished in book-form, on subjects akin to those of his great work. Mr Crawley's treatment of these problems of sexual anthropology, especially on the psychological side, was, in the years in which he was most actively at work, too uncompromisingly original to meet with general acceptation, even in academic circles. But now his standpoint, which can perhaps be best described as being that of a profound psychological analysis on the basis of biological common-sense, is beginning to be appreciated. And the following papers will be found, I think, to contain all those qualities which so sharply differentiate Mr Crawley's work from that of most other students in the same fields.

Book excerpt: In "Conducting the Divine: Navigating the Authentic Revival," readers are invited on a transformative journey into the heart of genuine spiritual revival. This compelling book explores the complexities and challenges of experiencing and leading a true move of God, untainted by human ambition or counterfeit displays of spirituality. The author delves into the crucial difference between merely witnessing divine manifestations and actively participating in them with a transformed life. With a focus on authenticity, the book warns against the dangers of counterfeit movements and the temptation to replicate previous revivals for personal gain or recognition. It emphasizes that a true revival cannot be owned, controlled, or used for financial benefit; it is purely the work of the Holy Spirit. "Conducting the Divine" is not just a critique of modern spiritual movements; it's a guide to discerning and fostering an authentic relationship with God. The book discusses the importance of obedience to God's will, the role of the Holy Spirit as a mediator and protector, and the necessity of a pure, uncorrupted revival in both the church and the world. Through personal anecdotes and biblical insights, the author illustrates the pitfalls of imitating spiritual phenomena and the beauty of a genuine encounter with God. The book encourages believers to seek a revival characterized by integrity, purity, and a deep, enduring connection with God. Ideal for pastors, church leaders, and anyone yearning for a true revival in their community, "Conducting the Divine" offers wisdom and practical advice on preparing for and sustaining a move of God that is both powerful and pure. It's a call to embrace a spirit-led life, marked by divine power and a fearless commitment to the authenticity of God's presence.
