Book excerpt: This volume offers a critical analysis of one the most ambitious editorial projects of late Victorian Britain: the edition of the fifty substantial volumes of the Sacred Books of the East (1879-1910). The series was edited and conceptualized by Friedrich Max Müller (1823-1900), a world-famous German-born philologist, orientalist, and religious scholar. Müller and his influential Oxford colleagues secured financial support from the India Office of the British Empire and from Oxford University Press. Arie L. Molendijk documents how the series has become a landmark in the development of the humanities-especially the study of religion and language-in the second half of the nineteenth century. The edition also contributed significantly to the Western perception of the 'religious' or even 'mystic' East, which was textually represented in English translations. The series was a token of the rise of 'big science' and textualized the East, by selecting their 'sacred books' and bringing them under the power of western scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. R. R. Tolkien, the beloved author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, brings to his work a great treasure--his Christian faith. Tolkien's literary works are so popular in part because, in some sense, they pertain to the real world. This present volume is an attempt to understand better the deep Christian influences on his work but also to explore the relevance of Tolkien's work for theology today. After examining Tolkien's fiction in order better to appreciate Christian influences, this volume takes a closer look at Tolkien's theology of fantasy, his response to the more skeptical origins of religion research, and applies his work to contemporary questions about method in biblical studies. Tolkien's Christianity informed all he wrote. Moreover, his own theology of fantasy holds great promise for contemporary theology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heather Meacock, in An Anthropological Approach to Theology, has compiled an argument, based upon the pluralist beliefs of Professor John Hick, for the revision of traditional Christianity. Hick's pluralist understanding of the theology of religions is influenced by the philosophy of Kant, and his theories about society's moral awareness. Meacock methodically explicates Hick's views while refuting his critics. She claims that some Christian doctrines, such as the Incarnation, lose meaning when interpreted literally, and that Christianity itself must begin to change its self perception to that of one among many world religions. This book will interest students of religion, philosophy, as well as anthropologists interested in religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the thought of Jacques Derrida as it relates to the tradition of apophatic thought—negative theology and philosophy—in both Western and Eastern traditions. Following the Introduction by Toby Foshay, two of Derrida's essays on negative theology, Of an Apocalyptic Tone Newly Adopted in Philosophy and How to Avoid Speaking: Denials, are reprinted here. These are followed by essays from a Western perspective by Mark C. Taylor and Michel Despland, and essays from an Eastern perspective by David Loy, a Buddhist, and Harold Coward, a Hindu. In the Conclusion, Jacques Derrida responds to these discussions.

Book excerpt: The first section of this work is a general review of some of the researches undertaken by the first Europeans who entered the Pacific and who readily perceived the contacts and cultural connections between Asia and Australia, South America and even Africa. The central chapters review the archaeology and associated references in South America with parallels included where appropriate from Asia and more usually with the Ancient Middle East. This section concentrates more on the Inca Origin myths as well as the many references in myth and legend showing that there must have been mariner contacts between Asia and South America probably over 5000 years before the arrival of the Europeans. The middle to last chapters deal with the many parallel cultural aspects that are reflected in the Near Middle East that are most likely the result of this cross-Pacific transfer through Oceania to South America that appear in the available archaeological and iconographical record as well as the evidence preserved in the local oral traditions in myths and legends where applicable.
