This grammar is the first extensive book-length treatment of a Saami language written in English. While focussing on the morphophonology of the main word classes nouns, adjectives and verbs, it also deals with other linguistic structures such as prosody, phonology, phrase types and clauses. Furthermore, it provides an introduction to the language and its speakers, and an outline of a preliminary Pite Saami orthography. An extensive annotated spoken-language corpus collected over the course of five years forms the empirical foundation for this description, and each example includes a specific reference to the corpus in order to facilitate verification of claims made on the data. Descriptions are presented for a general linguistics audience and without attempting to support a specific theoretical approach, but this book should be equally useful for scholars of Uralic linguistics, typologists, and even learners of Pite Saami.

Neil Kent's book fills this lacuna. In the first instance, he considers how the Sámi homeland is defined: its geography, climate, and early contact with other peoples. He then moves on to its early chronicles and the onset of colonisation, which changed Sámi life profoundly over the last millennium. Thereafter, the nature of Sámi ethnicity is examined, in the context of the peoples among whom the Sámi increasingly lived, as well as the growing intrusions of the states who claimed sovereignty over them. The Soviet gulag, the Lapland War and increasing urbanisation all impacted upon Sámi life. In the late twentieth century there has been an increasing symbiosis of ancient Sámi spiritual practice with Christianity. Recently the intrusions of the logging and nuclear industries, as well as tourism have come to redefine Sámi society and culture. Even the meaning of who exactly is a Sámi is scrutinised, at a time when some intermarry and yet return to Sámi, where their children maintain their Sámi identity.

Principal factors leading to this vulnerability relate to Indigenous peoples' exposure to climate hazards and their high reliance on natural resources and ecosystems to sustain traditional livelihoods and cultural practices. Due to existing social and economic stresses on many communities, their capacity to cope with climate hazards is further reduced. Arctic Indigenous communities have to respond to major economic and cultural impacts. Their experience is an invaluable resource from which culturally appropriate adaptation strategies can be formulated. However, among the non-Indigenous scientific community there is little knowledge of the nature of Indigenous peoples specific vulnerability to climate impacts, or their past adaptation strategies. The importance of the interconnectedness between human health, culture and country for many Indigenous people must be understood by the non-Indigenous community for future work to be successful.
