The prospects of the waste from CPO as the alternative energy source that can power rural development in a sustainable manner were researched. Research questions that sought to examine Ghana's present energy source vis-a-vis rural electrification as well as a sustainable alternative energy source available for rural energy demand that will supplement the existing national grid, using Kokofu, and NGL as a case study was analysed. It is a fact that, the energy demand of Ghana is not met, as supply of electricity falls short of the increasing demand and that the distribution system does not reach all corners of Ghana. The research concluded that a renewable energy source generated from the processes of CPO will be of prime importance to the nation as a whole with its minimal impact on the environment."

It is clear that some progress has been made in plans to address the energy access concerns but there is still some delay in diversifying the energy mix with renewable sources and advancing the use of mini-grids. The use of mini-grids will provide a sustainable solution to the energy crisis by increasing electricity reliability and providing power to areas too remote for grid connection.

Book excerpt: This thesis explores the question of the links between woodfuel use and deforestation in rural Ghana. Using two villages (Chamba and Nsuta) in the two main vegetation zones in Ghana--savannah and forests regions--as case studies, the central issues of access to, and use of wood as energy, either in the basic form, or in the processed form as charcoal and how these are linked to forest depletion and environmental degradation are explored. Whilst factors as such as high population growth rate, poverty, inappropriate agricultural policies and practices and logging are important in the debate over deforestation, the exploitation of wood for domestic energy stands out as the main destroyer of forests in Ghana. The author is of the conviction that unless immediate steps are taken to remedy the situation, Ghana, and indeed most of Sub-Sahara Africa are headed for a real environmental and energy crisis. Based on field research, the author makes some specific recommendations including the introduction and promotion of more fuel-efficient stoves, the promotion of a tree planting culture, the establishment of village woodlots, rural electrification and involving rural people in the management of established woodlots. These recommendations emphasise the protection and expansion of existing forests as against advocating the introduction of more sophisticated energy alternatives because, realistically, most rural households cannot afford these alternatives. The key, therefore, to ensuring a steady supply of household energy is to focus on protecting and expanding Ghana's forests.

Book excerpt: Ghana, a West African nation of 28 million people, provides an interesting case study on the interaction between power supply and politics in emerging economies. From 2012-2016, due to security of supply issues around hydro and fuel supplies, Ghana experienced the worst power crisis in its history with regular rolling blackouts. Rural and low-income urban areas and businesses were especially affected, and public discontent was palpable. The government’s response was a reactive approach to generation expansion planning, focused on increasing supply. Power generation was opened up to the private sector and emergency power plants were procured. 93 percent of capacity installed during this post-crisis period was thermal generation, which increased dependence on natural gas and crude oil. Overall, this power crisis highlighted the cost of overlooking reliability and an undiversified generation mix. I adapted a modeling framework to study Ghana’s power generation system and I use a bottom-up capacity expansion and economic dispatch model to explore generation expansion pathways in the country under different settings, with the goal of providing insights into Ghana’s capacity expansion decisions and identifying strategies that can help ensure better reliability and resiliency. Secondly, I use qualitative methods to evaluate Ghana’s electricity infrastructure project financing framework to discuss how project financing shapes technology choices. I then explore potential policy and legal instruments that could support more robust systems planning in Ghana’s electricity generation sector. Results reveal that a future power crisis is very likely given the high sensitivity of system reliability and resilience to natural gas and crude oil supply, global energy prices and transmission constraints. Strategies that could help avoid a future crisis include diversifying the generation mix, adding flexible generation (such as pumped hydro) to the mix, increasing transmission, and increasing the stability of fuel supply. This requires a holistic and coordinated approach to electricity planning between financial, technical, technological and political actors in the power generation sector.
