Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 400 photographs and 40 maps, this history of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment is a tribute to those who served and a guide for those who wish to retrace the soldiers' steps. It is the essential travel companion to the battlefields and memorials of the Newfoundland Contingent in the Great War. In 1914, the Dominion of Newfoundland stepped forward to stand to arms in aid of the British Empire, mobilizing a generation of young volunteers to fight the Central Powers. Unlike her Imperial cousins, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, this rugged North Atlantic country did not have a standing army. From this inauspicious beginning, the 1st Newfoundland Regiment evolved into one of the toughest and most respected fighting units in the First World War, the only Regiment serving in the armies of the British Empire to be awarded the title "Royal" during these hostilities. But the fighting cost them dearly. Suffering great losses, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment left many of its soldiers behind on the battlefields of France, Belgium, and Gallipoli. After the war, Padre Thomas Nangle of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment pioneered the commemoration of these soldiers through proper burials and the creation of magnificent memorials to the fallen. More than a hundred years have passed since the beginning of the Great War, and new generations are visiting these memorials to bear witness to the heroism and sacrifice of their forebears. This book is a must-have for anyone making the pilgrimage to those battlefields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Five Hundred: Being a Historical Sketch of the Military Operations of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in Gallipoli and on the Western Front During the Great War (1914-1918) British Empire in the greatest war of history, and to illustrate its persistent gallantry and splendid achievements by reference in each chapter to con spicuous individual heroism. The second purpose is to put in compact form and within reach of the public the individual military records of the. First contingent which embarked from Saint John's on the most solemn duty that has ever been thrust upon our country. The latter purpose has been greatly facilitated by the data availa'bleat the Militia Depart ment. The task of procuring individual picture's'of the men of the first contingent, which would add meaning and individuality to each record has, however, been a most difficult one. Only slightly less difficult has been the task of getting properfinf'drmatibn regarding the various engage ments in which our Regiment took part. The work has necessitated scores of interviews, and a continual search for scraps of information wherever it could be found. This work does not profess, however, to be a detailed record of the whole of the movements and a complete descrip tion of every engagement of the Regiment. Many readers may be for tunate enough to be able to supplement some of the descriptions or move ments with interesting information already in their possession. These, however, will be comparatively few. The hope is that the information contained herein will become general, especially among the young people of our country, who, when reading of heroes and heroic accomplishments, will not forget the heroes of their own country. This book was released on 2002-12-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steele and his comrades expected war to be a glorious adventure, their personal intersection with events of historic importance. His diary entries convey the excitement that accompanied the passage of the "First 500" recruits across the Atlantic to England and the boredom that followed as the regiment moved from training camps to garrison towns during the first year of the war. Steele's account of the regiment's role in the ill-fated Gallipoli expedition shows how the reality of war transforms individuals, shattering illusions about glory and heroic effort and replacing them with fears of death and wounding far from home. Steele's record of the shift to the western front and the events that led up to the virtual annihilation of his regiment on the fields of Beaumont Hamel on 1 July 1916 is filled with the pathos and irony of war. His diary captures the essence of how the individual deals with war's uncertainties, the terrible possibilities of self destruction on the battle-ground, and the need to control and overcome those fears. The Great War is of special interest to Newfoundland as it was the last significant effort by what was then a small Dominion to assert its place within the larger British Empire. Newfoundland's participation in the war resulted not only in the loss of lives and limbs but to the strains and tensions that led to its demise as an independent country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Badges of the Regular Infantry, 1914-1918 is based on over thirty years research in museums, archives and collections. It is an exhaustive study of the development of the battalion, brigade and divisional signs of the twelve divisions that formed the regular army during the Great War. It also looks at the badges of those battalions left behind to guard the Empire. While the divisional signs are well known, there has been no authoritative work on the signs worn by the infantry battalions. The book will illustrate the cap and shoulder titles used, as well as cloth signs worn to provide easy recognition in the trenches. Each regular and reserve battalion of a regiment has a listing, which provides a brief history of the unit and detailed information on the badges worn. It is prodigiously illustrated and contains much information, like why a shape or color was chosen, when it was adopted, what size it was, whether it was worn on a helmet, what color the helmet was and even what colors were used on horse transport; the majority of this rich and detailed information has never been published before. What helps make the information accurate and authoritative is that much of it comes from an archive created at the time and from personal correspondence with hundreds of veterans in the 1980s, many of whom still had their badges and often had razor-sharp recollections about wearing them. The book also provides some comments from these veterans. Using the illustrations will allow many of those unidentified photos in family albums to come to life.
