Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 1 of 5: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present Yet, even if British students were in the habit of thoroughly digesting the ordinary British histories which are within their reach, they would still know little about the nature and services of the British Navy. Our greater historians deal very sparingly with those subjects. Many of them seem to have been deterred by an exaggerated estimate of the attendant difficulties, or by an impression that naval history is far too technical to be understood by lay people. Others have altogether failed to awaken to the importance of the matter, and have, by that very failure, convicted themselves of incompetence. As for the popular historians, the compilers of school histories, text-books, and such-like, they have for the most part, and indeed almost without exception, bungled, where they have not shamefully scamped, the facts of our naval story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is an island nation and throughout history its navy has been of great importance for its defence. As a consequence it has always had a special significance and has over the centuries entrenched itself in the national psyche, making itself manifest not only through the hero-worship ofits principal characters such as Horatio Nelson and Sir Francis Drake but also finding expression through art, music, and literature.Like any great national institution, the navy is a complex web of interconnected histories - operational, strategic, political, economic, administrative, technological, and social. Now updated for its paperback edition, The Oxford Illustrated History of the Royal Navy, in a series of fourteenchapters, provides a thorough and engaging treatment of these histories, covering every aspect of naval history from the Anglo-Saxon period to the dawn of the new millennium. The book explores:Major action and campaigns - the defeat of the Spanish Armada, the Anglo-Dutch Wars, the Battle of Trafalgar, the Battle of Jutland, the Atlantic Campaign of 1939-45, the Falklands conflict, the Gulf War, and attacks on terrorist bases in Afghanistan in 2001.Developments in naval history and technology - navigational advances, surveying, constructional developments, disaster relief, the suppression of the slave trade, and the Strategic Defence Review of 1998.Key personalities - Drake and Nelson, Samuel Pepys, Francis Beaufort, Jackie Fisher, Lord Charles Beresford, Lord Jellicoe.Naval life - recruitment (press gangs, training, education, discipline), tactics, gunnery and armaments, amphibious operations, wages and conditions, victualling and supply. How and when did Britain's perception of the sea change from a thing of fear to a 'moat defence' (in the words of Shakespeare)? How did the navy's administrative systems develop during the Tudor period?During the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, its greatest period of expansion, how did the navy develop strategically and operationally? How successfully did the navy defend the British Empire during the nineteenth century? What role did the navy play in Victorian Britain's thirst for exploring of the world? What technical developments have been important to the navy? What effect did two world wars have on the role of the Royal Navy? What does the modern navy look like now and what about the future? With a full chronology, which has been brought up to date to the end of 2001, an extensive list of further reading, 16 pages of colour plates, 23 maps, 6 special Action Station diagram 'box' features, and around 200 black-and-white integrated illustrations, this is an authoritative and highlyreadable account of a unique fighting service and its people.

Book excerpt: This revisionist study shows how the Royal Navy's ideas about the meaning and application of seapower shaped its policies during the years between the wars. It examines the navy's ongoing struggle with the Treasury for funds, the real meaning of the 'one power standard', naval strategies for war with the United States, Japan, Germany and Italy, the influence of Mahan, the role of the navy in peacetime, and the use of propaganda to influence the British public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Navy, Vol. 5 of 6: A History From the Earliest Times to the Present The present volume contains the record of the whole of the great naval struggle with the empire of the first Napoleon, from the beginning of the renewed war in 1803, when, indeed, Napoleon had not yet assumed the imperial dignity, up to the summer of 1815, when the peace of Europe was secured by the deportation of the wonderful Corsican to St. Helena. I had hoped also to include in the volume the history of the war between Great Britain and the United States of America, 1812-1815; but, owing to the considerable length to which it necessarily extends, I have found myself unable to do so without swelling this section of the book to extravagant proportions. Governor Roosevelt's account of the American War, therefore, will occupy the first place in the next and final volume of the work. Nor do I much regret that I am not now able to include it, seeing that the contents of the present volume are already, so far as they go, complete in themselves, and that, although the two were waged simultaneously, our wars with France and with America in the early years of the nineteenth century had little or no connection one with the other, and were of fundamentally different origin and character. I am personally responsible for the whole of the instalment of the History now given to the reader. It was originally arranged that my friend, Mr. H. W. Wilson, should contribute the record of the minor operations of the war of 1803 - 15; and he actually wrote so much of it as brought the story up to nearly the close of the year 1810 but he was unable to revise what he had written, or to complete the account and that task, in consequence, remained for me. I much regret that pressure of other engagements should have thus deprived me of his co-operation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Navy's operations in World War II started on 3 September 1939 and continued until the surrender of Japan in August 1945 - there was no 'phoney war' at sea. The navy played a central role in the evacuation of the retreating British army at Dunkirk, and later orchestrated the sinking of Germany's mighty battleship and Hitler's pride, the Bismarck. Without the Royal Navy's attention to the defence of Britain's seaborne trade - especially in the struggle against German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic - there would not have been food for the country, fuel for the RAF's operations or supplies to keep the army fighting in Europe, North Africa and the Far East. Yet the outstanding naval contribution to Britain's survival and eventual victory came at a heavy cost in terms of ships and to the men who had to face not just the violence of the enemy, but also the violence of the sea. This book argues that World War II was, effectively, a maritime war; it was the Royal Navy's war.

Book excerpt: Between June 1940 and March 1942, the legendary Force H, based in Gibraltarnder the command of Admiral Sir James Somerville, was almost constantly inction. Formed in haste after the fall of France, Force H began its historyith the unpleasant but necessary task of disabling the French fleet aters-el-Kebir. The Force had two vital missions: to maintain a flow ofupplies to Malta and carry the war to the Italian fleet, and to protectritish shipping in the Atlantic. Its dual role was vividly demonstrated whents most famous ship, Ark Royal, flew off 48 Hurricanes to Malta from wellnside the Mediterranean on 21 May 1941 and then, just six days later, played critical part in the destruction of the Bismarck 450 miles out in thetlantic. This fascinating and thoroughly researched history is the firstook to be devoted to Force H. It is also a tribute to Somerville, one of theoyal Navy's most remarkable officers, who welded a hastily assembledollection of ships into a formidable fighting force.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This military history reveals the untold story of the United Kingdom’s Royal and Merchant Navies during the Falkland’s War. Soldiers and journalists alike wasted no time in memorializing the campaign to recapture the Falkland Islands after the Argentinian invasion in April, 1982. With the overwhelming focus on the role of the Army, the vital contributions of the Royal and Merchant Navies have been largely overlooked. Yet no British military forces would have been there at all had the Royal Navy not provided the necessary transport, not to mention air cover and bombardment support. In this book, naval historian David Brown tells the extraordinary story of how the fleet was assembled. Merchant-ships ranging from luxury liners such as the SS Canberra to cargo-carriers of every description were quickly converted to their new role as STUFTs, or Ships Taken Up From Trade. Brown describes the stupendous problems presented by the assembling and stowing of the thousands of tons of stores and equipment needed by the Expeditionary Forces and the way in which these problems were solved.
