Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortly after the start of the Second World War, the British Admiralty compulsorily purchased land near Ditton Priors, Shropshire, to store armaments. Using the Cleobury Mortimer and Ditton Priors Light Railway, thousands of tons of shells and high explosives were brought by train to be assembled and stored in specially-built magazines protected by 'batter mounds'. Every weekday, up to thirty buses brought in several hundred men and women from surrounding villages and towns and took them back after work. They all signed the Official Secrets Act. To avoid fires, no smoking and no newspapers were allowed on site, Eating sweets was forbidden as the acetic acid was said to be corrosive. There were no electric lights or heating in the magazines and laboratories. Trolleys laden with ammunition were hauled by small tractors from a railway siding. Trucks carried crates of assembled armaments to naval docks around Britain until, twenty years after the end of the war, the Depot became surplus to the Navy's requirement. Employees were transferred to other depots or accepted redundancy. Arrangements to sell the land back to the original owners were cancelled when the British government allowed the American Army to store 22,000 tons of their armaments. Legal disputes followed and questions were raised in parliament. When the Americans moved out in 1967, most of the land was sold to its original owners. In the 1980s there was a scare when it was claimed that the Russians had allocated two nuclear weapons to target Ditton Priors. Today, part of the Depot has become an industrial estate. The rest is hidden by trees and gradually becoming overgrown by vegetation. Bernard O'Connor's documentary history of the Royal Naval Armament Depot in Ditton Priors uses accounts and illustrations found in local history books, newspapers, government and the construction company's correspondence, websites and interviews with local people who remembered working there.

Demand for food meant more land had to be brought under cultivation. As the climate was generally warmer than it is today, it was possible to grow cereals and vegetables on higher land. On the Clee Hills in Shropshire, between Ludlow and Bridgnorth, woods were cleared and the timber used in construction of new houses. Boulders and rocks were moved from the soil and used for building walls. The newly exposed soil was ploughed, seeded, weeded and harvested to feed the growing population. Many new settlements grew up on the slopes below the Brown Clee, Abdon Burf and Titterstone Clee. Some of them are still in existence but a number have been deserted. Studying deserted medieval villages began in the 1960s and Maurice Beresford, Trevor Rowley, Neha Patil and other historians and archaeologists have researched and written about those in Shropshire. Whilst many believe that the Black Death was responsible for massive rural depopulation, there were a number of other reasons why people deserted these settlements including economic hardship due to climate change, crop failures, animal diseases and wealthy landowners wanting the land for sheep grazing, for parkland and to remove unsightly buildings which spoilt their view. Book excerpt: The Clee Hills in Shropshire are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty but few residents and even fewer visitors are aware that it is claimed that more people have been killed in air crashes on these hills than on any other highland area in Britain. Bernard O'Connor's research reveals that there were 19 air crashes on the Clee Hills between 1937 and 1975 with the loss of 43 lives. Whilst 23 were killed on the Brown Clee during the Second World War, Titterstone Clee claimed 11. It needs to be remembered that 17 survived their crashes. Those who lost their lives were 28 British personnel, six Germans, four Americans, four Canadians and one New Zealander. Four Avro Ansons came down, three Bristol Blenheims, two Vickers Wellingtons, a Flying Fortress, a Tiger Moth, an American Mustang, a Miles Magister, a Hawker Typhoon, an Airspeed Oxford, a Jet Provost, a Harrier Jet, a Junkers 88 and a Heinkel. It also needs to be stressed that many local people came out to help after the crashes, agricultural labourers, farmers, the Home Guard, Anti-Aircraft crews, Searchlight crews, troops from the King's Shropshire Light Infantry, the local police as well as staff from the RAF Maintenance (Rescue) unit and RAF Accident investigators. Local hospital staff, clergy, gravediggers and crematorium staff played an important role. Local photographers made a record of many of the crashes and reported from the local, and sometimes national, press ensured readers were provided the details. Using contemporary sources and the research undertaken by aviation historians, Philippa Hodgkiss, Glyn Warren, Adrian Durnell and Tom Thorne, this documentary history provides the human story of these many disasters and near disasters.
