It is now, and has been for very many years, accepted both by the public and the majority of art workers as the governing in uence in the British art world, and neither criticism nor opposition, of which it has had its fair share at all stages of its development, can be said to have perceptibly affected its progress. A number of causes have combined to give it the remarkable position which it now holds. It has been from the very beginning under the direct patronage of the Crown, and has acquired in consequence a social standing of a very definite kind. It has maintained a free school for students of art under the direction of the leading artists of this country, and so has played a part of no little significance in artistic education. It has by its annual exhibi tions provided the many people who are interested in or curious ll about art matters with a periodical entertainment. In many other ways, by taking an active part in schemes intended to promote the credit of British art at home and abroad, by giving frequent and generous contributions of money for the assistance of artists in distress, by the administration of funds entrusted to it for various professional purposes, and by constant intervention in the politics of the art world, it has year by year strengthened its claim to considera tion, until at last it cannot be said to have a rival or even a serious competitor. Book Synopsis The Life and Letters of Sir John Everett Millais by : John Guille Millais
Download or read book The Life and Letters of Sir John Everett Millais written by John Guille Millais and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prodigiously talented artist, Sir John Everett Millais (1829-96) co-founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Rossetti and others, helping to revolutionise the Victorian art world. The minute realism of paintings like Christ in the House of His Parents, and his high-profile marriage to Ruskin's ex-wife Effie, were gradually accepted, and the iconic Ophelia was widely admired. Success as an illustrator also put him in the public eye, with the engravings market bringing him new wealth. With popularity came a return to more traditional forms in portraiture and landscape, inspired by Reynolds, Velázquez and the Old Masters, although he also played off Whistler and the aesthetic movement. He became president of the Royal Academy in the last year of his life. His son, John Guille Millais (1865-1931), published this highly illustrated and acclaimed two-volume biography in 1899. Volume 1 provides an account of Millais' most influential years up to 1867.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sentimental Library: Comprising Books Formerly Owned by Famous Writers, Presentation Copies, Manuscripts, and Drawings He ridiculed Wordsworth unmercifully. And my heart was glad, for oh, it is a joyous thing to hear a doctor and a theatrical manager dispute about Wordsworth, especially when both have asked you, Why first editions P The collecting of books is inspired by a sentiment founded on reverence and hero-worship. It would seem to follow that the more interesting the history of a particular copy of a book, the greater the appeal to the collector and the lover of literature. If, as Byron says, a book 's a book although there 's nothing in it, surely a book is more than a book when the extra something in it takes the form of a presentation inscription by its author, or notes in the handwriting of a famous man who once owned and read it.
